Game Thread: LAA (Williams) @ White Sox (Quintana), 6:10pm

QUOTE (fathom @ May 11, 2013 -> 07:11 PM) Tank looks great since he returned from the DL. Screw it, bat him 4th. Waiting for the post-game excuses this time. Rongey: "Well, Tyler Greene was drafted by the Cardinals and hasn't played 2B enough to adjust to the different throwing angles. You've got to be patient with guys unaccustomed to new positions. Just be patient." Last baserunner Sox didn't give up to the Angels was a single in the 3rd. Dunn at .138. While I know it's not going to happen soon, I would love to see Greg775 get his at-bats, just to show how impossible for someone to get up off their couch and hit a major league pitcher. At least it would be more entertaining. -

Viciedo with a "muscle" shot, lol. Another chance with RISP. Well....yet another failure in that situation. Doesn't matter where Keppinger is in the line-up, you can't hide him forever. Scary that the 2nd best average on our team right now is Viciedo at .264 (no, I won't count Greene since he can't play any D). -

QUOTE (fathom @ May 11, 2013 -> 06:18 PM) Hopefully this is the last year we have to see him on the Sox. Who, Ventura, Greene or Flowers, lol? We're first in the AL in passed balls. Tied for first in errors. Worst fielding percentage. Wait, Viciedo has another walk and a single? Wow. -

Williams is not "coming out" because of the pink glove. Has received permission from MLB offices to wear the glove on Mother's Day weekend due to the passing of his mom. -

QUOTE (fathom @ May 11, 2013 -> 05:22 PM) De Aza's defense is so bad this year, it's shocking. Let's just blame the WBC, because otherwise we have to blame Ventura, lol. It's reaching the point (where Ozzie had to bench Rios for one game a couple of seasons ago) where they just have to sit DeAza for a game or two, even with the homers. Changed the ruling. Double and an error now. -

QUOTE (jeffro2525 @ May 11, 2013 -> 05:21 PM) How many times has DeAza not picked up a ball cleanly this year? ridiculous...I'm so sick of seeing the same s*** every game. 3 times just in the last week. At least 5-6 times already this season. If Rosenberg allows that "triple" to stand, he should be fired by MLB on the spot after they review it. -

QUOTE (fathom @ May 11, 2013 -> 05:17 PM) Firing on all cylinders Our only positive so far is the team's become so bad that Ozzie Guillen is enjoying listening to the games...if that's a positive, lol. I guess it increases the radio ratings and advertising buys. Holy Cow. Should have been 2 errors on that play, but there will only be one assessed. DeAza with ANOTHER horrible play that gives 3B to Hamilton. Greene totally whiffed on the throw. Wow. Keppinger actually made a play defensively. -

Why would you throw a slider inside there when everyone's looking for him to bust a slider or cutter inside and they're opening up their hips to turn on it? THAT'S WHERE THEY ARE ALL LOOKING. MAKE AN ADJUSTMENT, CATCHERS/COACHING STAFF/ADVANCED SCOUTS. Jesus. Pitch calling this year has been ATROCIOUS/HORRENDOUS/HORRIFIC. Farmer got a message from Ozzie Guillen that he's been listening to the games. Wonder what he's thinking? Any twitter activity from Ozzie or his sons at all this year? It is like he completely disappeared from the face of the Earth, except for Greg775 talking about him from time to time. -

Tied for lowest fielding percentage in the AL. Tied for second in most errors. Last in the majors in road attendance (that will give a little clue how boring and lacking in identity some fans think this team is, not only our own fans but fans and ticket holders of other teams)... Not only are we last, but we're 2000 fans lower than the Cleveland Indians for 29th. It's not even close. Opposing owners must not want to see the Sox on their weekend schedules in April, May and September. -
http://www.milb.com/scoreboard/index.jsp?s...mp;ymd=20130511 Matt Garza pitching for TN against Birmingham. Beck starting for W-S...got through the first inning unscathed, but 2 walks. W-S line-up scary bad, without Hawkins to look at. Other than DeMichele and Kevan Smith, not much to be excited about. I guess a few are fans of Haddow. On second thought, Charlotte's line-up is bleaker.

QUOTE (Brian @ May 10, 2013 -> 04:32 PM) Ever see BURIED? Could be similar. I'll see how this is constructed before judging. Who ever knew Ryan Reynolds could act a LITTLE, haha?

QUOTE (Disco72 @ May 11, 2013 -> 03:58 PM) Callaspo (3B) Trout (CF) Pujols (DH) Trumbo (LF) Hamilton (RF) Kendrick (2B) Harris (SS) Iannetta © Jimenez (1B) vs. Jose Quintana (2-0, 3.86 ERA) Quintana needs to be better tonight at going deeper into games, as he has only two starts (of 6) longer than 5 innings. De Aza (CF) Ramirez (SS) Rios (RF) Konerko (DH) Dunn (1B) Viciedo (LF) Keppinger (3B) Flowers © Greene (2B) vs. Jerome Williams (1-1, 3.16 ERA) Williams is making only his second start of the season after pitching in the bullpen earlier this year. If Jerome Freakin' Williams throws a shutout, then we're REALLY in trouble. Listening to Rongey in the post-game yesterday, even he is getting a bit skeptical about our defense and intimating that if we get through another month with this style of play...it will be what we are, as a team. The pattern or trend will stick for the rest of the season. "Getting tired of repeating it or harping on it. Things need to change." Ventura Gillaspie with flu-like symptoms. Tyler Greene in...great. -
QUOTE (bbilek1 @ May 11, 2013 -> 04:28 PM) http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/mlb/news/...d=si_topstories SI has the Sox taking Dominic Smith, who they refer to as "the purest high school hitter in this year's draft." Curse of death if the White Sox draft him. Reminds me of any time for about the past 30 years I've ever heard my Hawkeyes have recruited a "pure shooter" at the 2 or 3 spot...well, still waiting for the next Reggie Miller or Curry brother to materialize. Probably I will never see a single one in my lifetime! One every recruiting class always gets that unfortunate label, though. (To be fair, Harper's been close to living up to the hype surrounding him since early in high school.)

Who has seen THE GREAT GATSBY? A bit surprising debut...more popular than expected. Most were projecting high 30's/low 40's opening, but it's going to end up well over $50 million, competing against the 2nd weekend of Iron Man 3. -
QUOTE (Balta1701 @ May 11, 2013 -> 03:31 PM) Strasburg gives up 1 baserunner through 4 and the Cubs have dropped 4 unearned on him in the 5th. Nationals must be trying to emulate the White Sox. Harper's been close to great, but overall, that team has been a big disappointment (other than sweeping us, lol).

QUOTE (CaliSoxFanViaSWside @ May 11, 2013 -> 04:27 PM) And you want to make it 1 in 20 years. I think the "end game" is to have the team lose 90-110 games for 5 years, then JR will be "forced" to sell the team. Since KW can't be fired anymore, essentially....and picking on Ventura is like blaming the captain of the Titanic for the ship foundering and sinking, better to blame the owner of the entire enterprise.

QUOTE (bbilek1 @ May 11, 2013 -> 04:10 PM) This thread is ridiculous. Just gazing through it and I see all of this. 1.) Release Alexei Ramirez, our best defender and one of the more productive SS's in baseball. 2.) Replace him with the least productive offensive player in baseball who has not played SS since '08. 3.) Replace him with Beckham. 4.) Bat Gillaspie 1st. 5.) Bat De Aza 3rd. Ban OP and throw out the key. It's May 11th. Wait two months and let the bats warm up and see where the team is. If by the middle of July we still suck, trade Thornton, Crain, Lindstrom, De Aza, Konerko (if we can) and Rios/Alexei/Peavy if we get good offers. Use the rest of the season as a tryout for Flowers, Phegley, Beckham, Gillaspie, Viciedo and maybe even Jordan Danks. Also see the real potential of Axelrod, Quintana and Santiago. Make a couple targeted moves and spend a little new money and out pitching should keep us at least competitive for the immediate future. The problem is getting major league ready talent to restore our starting line-up to at least average. We don't need a great offense to win, but we need a decent one. Other than DeAza (probably prospects a year or two away), dealing from the remaining veteran core of Peavy/Ramirez/Rios is the only way to get a decent return back, Peavy in particular. Everything else is just dumping salary and opening up playing time for youngsters. And that still leaves the Dunn and Danks issues, although at least Dunn will be "done" one way or the other at the end of 2014, if not sooner.

QUOTE (Marty34 @ May 11, 2013 -> 01:31 PM) I only want changes IF they improve the team, Dick Allen. That's like saying, I'm only going to agree to produce a movie script if it's profitable. C'mon. Adam Dunn made a lot of sense. Josh Hamilton or Zach Greinke might have improved the team...and you would have been in favor of the Sox making a splash and signing either of those two players. How do you feel Keppinger at SS or Danks in CF would possibly be an improvement? Peavy traded and replaced by Axelrod/John Danks? You've just added another 8-10 losses to this year's total record.

QUOTE (KyYlE23 @ May 10, 2013 -> 01:33 PM) Yea I dont know what he is talking about either. Tokyo Drift is actually the 3rd film in the series. It isnt really all amazing that the film series came this far, the first film was a huge success, and ever since they reunited the original cast starting with the 4th movie(Fast and Furious) the film series once again became a big hit. Where did I ever say Tokyo Drift with Lucas Black was the first movie? Amazing to think where it came from First movie great, second movie without the whole original cast decent but nothing like the sensation the first movie was... C'mon. 98% of the people who post in movie threads here or pay any attention at all to popular culture know the origin of that series. Do I REALLY need to provide a history of all the movies to place Tokyo Drift in proper context? I don't get it. If I don't provide enough information because it requires reading/writing a longer post, nobody's happy, lol. Then, when I don't explain why Vin Diesel or Jordana Brewster or Michelle Rodriguez disappeared from the series...eventually leading to the no-name TD (unless you count the Japanese actress who was actually more famous as a model at the time she took that part)...well, I've never met anyone in my life who thought that debuting a series with a movie with limited appeal (only to the Asian market) would make any sense at all. Heck, Formula 1/Street Racing isn't even close to a cultural phenomenon here in China, YET. Maybe a decade from now. -
Liriano going for the Pirates today in his first start of the season for them.

QUOTE (fathom @ May 11, 2013 -> 09:58 AM) I've noticed you're only positive in your comments about the Sox if you're arguing with marty Well...I can't be quite as reasonable and level-headed as you normally are...but when you see a majority of the moderators getting frustrated with Ventura or already talking about next year, you know things are pretty bad.

Let the record show that we can't blow anything up because there's nothing in the minor leagues that's going to be any better. I'm actually starting to feel sorry for Ventura. With guys like DeAza and Rios and their lackadaisical play this year...we don't have any viable options in the minors who are deserving or meriting full-time play. Although, let the record also show that DISCIPLINARIAN is not the first word that comes to mind with Ventura (it wasn't with Ozzie, either). And this isn't like the Pierre/Viciedo and Lillibridge/Dunn (2011) debates...it's Jordan Danks and D. Wise. Neither of those guys are part of the future of this organization. They're the final player on the roster of a very good team, but not both of them...one would be in the minors or released...or expendable, like Conor Gillaspie.

QUOTE (Marty34 @ May 11, 2013 -> 09:45 AM) Okay, what's your plan to compete in 2014. How do you use this money? Hire whoever advised you to pick Josh Hamilton and Zach Greinke as your big additions to the White Sox. Because those two moves would have worked out wonderfully... Tony LaRussa will be 67 this October. Are we seriously going to go backwards in time? LaRussa as GM at this point in his life would make about as much sense as Harrelson did. Simply because it would be a complete break from the KW/Hahn regime, I can't say that I would oppose it 100% because I don't have much faith in Hahn or Buddy Bell or Paddy, either.

QUOTE (Balta1701 @ May 11, 2013 -> 09:40 AM) They did exactly what you want us to do with guys like Pence and Tavares. And the end result has been...55 win seasons. It's an incredibly beautiful example of the end result of your plan to give everyone away. Or the Mariners. Although they have at least kept King Felix. The Twins have had no choice but to hold on to Mauer and Morneau. The Padres are at least trying to keep Headley and traded for Quentin last year. And we'll have the beautiful rebuilding example of the Cubs to follow thanks to the Chicago media. But CLE or Miami is about the worst-case scenario....where the fans have grown to dislike management (Dolan and Loria) so much, they wouldn't even support a team that had recently won 10 of 11, added Bourn and Swisher and Francona, etc. About the only counter-example that's working is the A's. Some would say the Pirates and Royals are on the verge of a breakthrough, as well.

QUOTE (Marty34 @ May 11, 2013 -> 09:36 AM) Alexei Ramirez is single-handedly keeping White Sox attendance up? Lamenting the loss of Carlos Lee, are you kidding me?? Nobody with the Astros is lamenting that.
