  1. QUOTE(103 mph screwball @ Apr 10, 2007 -> 11:40 AM) If this true, I'm sorry for the pain that this will bring Jose and his family. I hope it is not true. Other than death of a loved one, divorce is one of the most stressful events that can happen in a person's life. If it is true, line up the ladies for Jose. Girls gone wild Cuban edition. I don't think we want him hanging out with Joe Francis, Snoop Dogg or Paris Hilton. If anything, the stability that his family, Ozzie Guillen, Hernandez, etc. provided was one of the key factors in him turning things around. I don't think we want him out there joining the Anderson/McCarthy post-game pub crawl circuit. And it doesn't really fit Jose's personality.
  2. QUOTE(Kalapse @ Apr 10, 2007 -> 11:34 AM) How do you even know he's the future? Do you know if he's any good? He had a disappointing season at the plate last year and he's not getting any playing time right now, how do you know what you have in him? How does keeping him on the bench help his development or help with any future personnel decisions in the outfield? Is Luis Terrero not capable of sitting on is ass 6 games a week? Maybe they do like Terrero equally (to BA)...it's not like there is a HUGE age difference between the two. I don't think he'll ever be able to hit more than .240 in the big leagues, but .240 with 15 homers and 60 RBI's would be fine, as long as he played defense the way we all know he's capable of playing. http://www.thebaseballcube.com/players/T/Luis-Terrero.shtml Terrero just turned 27, and both Luis and BA have the same concerns surrounding them. They're not hitting enough home runs, and neither are true stolen base threats either. If you don't have great speed or power (like Erstad at this point in his career), you have to make up for it by playing fundamentally sound baseball and hustling. Brian Anderson simply doesn't profile as a "small ball" type of player. And I'm not sure that he ever will. It will be interesting to see our starting OF next year, to say the least.
  3. QUOTE(Balta1701 @ Apr 10, 2007 -> 11:17 AM) I have difficulty thinking of many worse ideas than the concept of bringing up a future, hopefully top-of-the-line starting pitcher for this team and sticking them as the 12th man in the bullpen. Yes, the Bullpen was used a lot in the first week. What are the odds of that happening again? I'd say pretty low. Even with the starters being shelled last year, our bullpen still threw the fewest innings in baseball. It's possible there might be a few more innings available this year what with people aging in the rotation and the occasional bout of bad luck. But if that's the case...why should we use a starter for that role? Gio, Haeger, etc., they all are going to be a lot better served working as starters and throwing 6-7 inning games all year. If we want another reliever, bring up Logan or Bukvich. One more reliever would give us 12 pitchers, which would be a loaded bullpen in terms of how many people are in it. Even for periods of fairly heavy use, that'd be plenty to get by. It worked for Buehrle. It didn't work for McCarthy. It all depends upon a pitcher's make-up. Assuming the White Sox still see Gio as a starter, it probably does make sense for him to keep starting in Birm/Charlotte. OTOH, you never know what Ozzie and KW are thinking. Maybe they prefer to move Gio to LH set-up and make Sisco a starter? That doesn't make a lot of sense, Gio was the centerpiece of that Garcia trade... There have been lots of concerns about Gio's frame since he was drafted, and whether he will have the durability/stamina as a starter. Another issue is the pitching coach at AA or AAA. Some would probably argue that "Miracle Worker" Cooper being around a pitcher everyday would offset the perceived value of them starting every five days in the minors. And some pitcher need to build their arm strength through 22-26 starts, others, like Haeger, would seem capable of adjusting to any situation.
  4. QUOTE(EvilJester99 @ Apr 10, 2007 -> 11:10 AM) If he was going to be used as trade bait you would see him playing to raise his value... Ozzie just doesn't want him on this team so he sits him... KW has to hold onto BA for next year, because there's a 50/50 chance Sweeney and Anderson will be the outfielders instead of Dye and Erstad. Trading him now, while buried on the bench, doesn't do anything for the White Sox. He would be much more tradeable if he was playing everyday and making the AAA All-Star game, proving that he can improve his plate discipline, power hitting and steal some bases as well.
  5. QUOTE(Soxfest @ Apr 10, 2007 -> 11:09 AM) Gaudin is meat tonight go Sox! Gaudin, 22, emerged with the Devil Rays in 2003 after signing as an unheralded 34th-round pick in 2001 out of high school in suburban New Orleans. He went 5-3, 2.13 in the Cal League, then 2-0, 0.47 in the Double-A Southern League to earn a surprise promotion to Tampa Bay, where he went 2-0, 3.60 in 40 innings. He has never quite recaptured the magic of that season but has been a workhorse, splitting 2004 between the big leagues and Triple-A before getting traded for catcher Kevin Cash last December. He set a career-high with 150 innings and two shutouts at Triple-A Syracuse in 2005 and finishing fourth in the International League in ERA. He finished the minor league season at 9-8, 3.35 and went 1-3, 13.15--allowing six homers in 13 innings--after a September callup to Toronto. Gaudin is primarily a two-pitch pitcher, but changes speeds well and is aggressive, with bulldog makeup. His fastball ranges from 86-92 mph, and his slider rates as average. If he continues to make strides with his changeup he could stay in a starting role, but more realistically he projects as a middle reliever. from baseballamerica.com
  6. QUOTE(Jimbo @ Apr 10, 2007 -> 11:02 AM) I have the choice... why post when you think we will lose. kennedy will beat us, we cant beat soft tossing lefties, tomorrow that is. I wouldn't call Kennedy a soft tosser, he doesn't throw in the mid 90's like he used to do, but he's from a powderpuff pitcher up there. from mlb.com Forced into the starting rotation in the wake of an injury to No. 2 starter Esteban Loaiza, Gaudin was given only two outings late in Spring Training to convert from the relief role he held with the A's in 2006. But he was primarily a starter in the Minors, and on Thursday, in the 11th start of his big-league career -- his last came in June 2005 while a member of the Toronto Blue Jays -- Gaudin gave up two runs on five hits without a walk while striking out three over five innings against the host Angels in Anaheim, leaving the game with a one-run lead. Gaudin threw 74 pitches and likely won't be allowed to throw more than 90 against the White Sox. He's made four previous appearances against them, allowing one run over 4 2/3 innings.
  7. QUOTE(StrangeSox @ Apr 10, 2007 -> 08:42 AM) I'd venture a guess that he'll actually start to regress at the plate if he's not seeing any live pitching. Play him or send him down. Having him ride the pine all the time doesn't do anyone any good. Contreras pitched one inning. Buehrle got knocked out of the game early. Our starters should be going 6-7 innings, and if Danks can go 6 IP/3 ER every time out, I think everyone in White Sox Nation would be satisfied, as that would be the same (or better than) Garcia at a fraction of the cost. I'm not so sure they need Logan yet. Who knows, maybe Ozzie will bring up Gio and put him in that long "Buehrle 2000" role instead of Logan.
  8. QUOTE(southsider2k5 @ Apr 10, 2007 -> 08:52 AM) Any pitcher on this staff with an era under 4.00 will win at least 15 games, and probably more like 20. With this Sox offense, sure....but remember Roger Clemens the last couple of seasons in HOU? I think the White Sox led the league in pitching in 1993 (all their starters were below 4.00) and I don't think any of the starters won 20. Also, our bullpen is more than capable of blowing a few wins for the starters.
  9. QUOTE(NorthSideSox72 @ Apr 10, 2007 -> 07:44 AM) I'd have to concur. Heck, even a cop can't just wander in there, unless they are invited or have a warrant. And those servers are, in my experience, not given any authority for entry or trespass that is anything beyond what any other citizen has. I've seen them work before, they do things like wait for people to come out of work and catch them on the way to their cars for just that reason. I will say though, if he did just get divorced that day, it would explain a lot about his behavior out there. Not just his pitching, but his puzzled wandering around the mound, hesitation, etc. No one is a robot, and everyone who isn't a sociopath would be effected to at least a certain degree by that sort of thing. Is there one concrete link here? Wouldn't the information be out by now? I saw Ozzie talked to him after the game to see what was going on, what's the problem?, but I don't remember anything specifically about his wife. There were hints and intimations, but Ozzie didn't "out" his divorce that I saw. Usually, the beat reporters are pretty protective of players' privacy, unless it is someone like Thomas or Sosa. McDowell and DJ were right, last night he started off very tentatively, was getting behind, throwing forkballs when he should have trusted his fastball (which we'd all like to see at 95-97 instead of 91-92, but I think the gun was a little slow, although Harden's flat fastball was 97, he was normally 92-93 as well). I think Jose has decided that he's better off with a low 90's moving fastball than overthrowing a 95-97 fastball...although I do remember him getting a ton of movement from overhand and 3/4ers and still maintaining control. At any rate, that was a huge breakthrough (I hope) for Jose psychologically, and should help to erase the Indians OD massacre.
  10. QUOTE(ChWRoCk2 @ Apr 9, 2007 -> 10:49 PM) I laugh at everyone who thought Ponson would be good, yes his spring was alright but the guy is still overweight and will never come close to his past success. He gets shelled way too many times. Mccarthy did well today, good to see he got a win, hope he pitches well for Rangers. I vaguely remember this Marshall kid from last year. Strange, we had two kids in Marshall and Castro that were close to major league ready and neither of them ever made it into the hunt for the LHR spot in ST last year. Just shows you that baseball is all about scouting, at all levels.
  11. http://www.livescience.com/othernews/07040...eball_math.html Well, that seemed to work out well for the Sox in 2005...
  12. QUOTE(DrunkBomber @ Apr 9, 2007 -> 07:55 PM) McCarthy update: 3 innings 4 hits 2 earned runs 1 walk 2 ks He's really settled down now...5 IP, 2 runs
  13. http://www.minorleaguebaseball.com/milb/st...cmcaax_biraax_1 4 IP, 0 H, 0 BB, 0 K's is the line for Honel so far Terrero hit his 3rd homer and Vladimir Nunez has a shutout through 6 innings for Charlotte. BIRMINGHAM, AL – It took until the fifth month of the 2006 season for the Birmingham Barons to string together four consecutive wins. On Monday night at Regions Park, the Barons won their fourth consecutive contest, in their fifth game of the season. Kris Honel, making his first start since August of 2005, was almost untouchable over six scoreless innings, and three different Barons collected three hits in a balanced attack. Honel, the former first-round draft pick of the White Sox, made his first start in 17 months after missing the entire 2006 season following elbow surgery. His offense gave him an immediate cushion, putting two runs on the board in the first inning for the third consecutive night. After Chris Getz led off the frame with a triple, Chris Kelly and Jeremy West delivered RBI singles to put Birmingham on top. Honel would take it from there, as he retired 18 of the 20 batters he faced in the ballgame, consistently keeping the Carolina lineup off balance
  14. QUOTE(BigSqwert @ Apr 9, 2007 -> 07:07 PM) First the Tigers and now the Twins. Turning into a good day in the AL Central. They have Stewart catching McCarthy. Brandon is throwing 89-92. They mentioned his curveball won't move as well in Texas and that he needs to find a way to get a little movement on his fastball. Same concern KW had with him. Mentioned that he wasn't very good holding runners. Iwamora looks really good for the D-Rays. Sox nemesis Delmon Young ripped a double to LF. Have to say that Cruz and Catalanotto don't comprise a very good defensive corner OF, and Chris Stewart just threw the ball into CF on a SB attempt. Struck out Dukes so now there's one out, runner on 3rd.
  15. Sidney has already given up 5 runs in 2 IP, although Jason Kubel looked like the worst LF in baseball on a ball from Posada that should have been caught, instead of a 2 run ground-rule double. Abreu hit a 2 run bomb in the 2nd. Of course, with Pavano out there, you can never count the Twins out. And Ponson's short leash leads right to Matt Garza or Slowey in AAA...at least the rotation is not steamrolling anyone, a good sign for the Sox. It will be interesting to see if Ortiz can keep it up, and for how long.
  16. QUOTE(PlunketChris @ Apr 9, 2007 -> 02:17 AM) Atleast this year we won't experience the wrath of Frank Thomas to go with the A's, maybe that gives us a little bit of a chance? I mean... Mike Piazza? He doesn't scare me nearly as much as Big Frank. 4-23 Well, we actually have had decent luck against Harden over the years, as opposed to Santana or Sabathia. I'd settle for one out of 3, although 2/3 would be GREAT.
  17. QUOTE(Gregory Pratt @ Apr 8, 2007 -> 11:53 PM) Ichiro's better than decent, mate. But I hear ya. While we're at it, might as well add Quintin Berry to the list as well.
  18. QUOTE(witesoxfan @ Apr 8, 2007 -> 09:41 PM) I think so, given the right price. And that right price could be something completely ridiculous too knowing Bavasi. Given, they'd have to be way out, and the offer would have to be right. Thus, I would imagine they would look for atleast Gio, and perhaps Gio and Broadway. The only way I'd make either is if I were given the opportunity to extend him, and if I wasn't, there'd be no way in hell it'd be worth it. It would take Gio, Broadway and either Sweeney or Fields. It would make no sense at all, if the White Sox couldn't get him to agree to an extension (like the Garcia deal).
  19. QUOTE(Chisoxfn @ Apr 8, 2007 -> 02:22 PM) Nice to see the Sox have Floyd on the same schedule as Danks which is very smart, because if you were a betting man you'd say that if the Sox were going to ever need Floyd up as a starter it would be to replace Danks (with them figuring Danks needs more seasoning). I agree on Long. He was really tired last season and it showed and hopefully the full off-season has him fresh because with his stuff there is no reason he shouldn't succeed. Plus I like that the Sox are stretching him out as a starter (even though he projects as a reliever) because it will force him to actually develop some other pitchers which will help him a lot once he shifts over to the pen (where he'd only rely on his two pitches and make little development outside of that). Gavin Floyd pitched very well today. 6 IP, 4 H, 1 ER, 1 BB, 5 K's http://www.minorleaguebaseball.com/milb/st...pawaaa_chraaa_1 Josh Fields also got his first hit of the season, in the 10th inning.
  20. to the Tigers. At least it wasn't as dramatic as ARod's. I-Roid hit a 3 run homer off Jorge Soria to get back the lead, 3-2, top of the 9th. Riske is their closer now, and Dotel is out, but Soria had pitched really well in the 7th and 8th.
  21. QUOTE(Buehrle>Wood @ Apr 8, 2007 -> 02:00 PM) And Danks has a NO HITTER through 3. You can't jinx a no-hitter until the 5th or 6th, but QUIET!!! Danks is like Buehrle with a much more lively fastball. Not a bad thing to have. KW knows what he's doing.
  22. QUOTE(SoxFan1 @ Apr 8, 2007 -> 01:46 PM) Pitch #1: Failed bunt. Pitch #2: Pop out. Sweet. o for 3 with RISP Those might have been our best chances of the day. You know Danks will give up some runs the way he's gettin behind in the count, and going through the top of the line-up again.
  23. QUOTE(SoxFan1 @ Apr 8, 2007 -> 01:27 PM) Wow, DJ and Hawk we're completely correct on that last AB by Dye. When you watch the best pitch to swing at, you might as well sit down vs Johan. JD Version April 2005? Well, those who weren't willing to give him $45 million for 3 years are being validated so far.
  24. QUOTE(Heads22 @ Apr 8, 2007 -> 01:27 PM) It's awesome we're making him work this much. Kazmir is human, induces a popout. 3 IP, 8 K, H (Vernon Wells HR) Nasty. He gone. Admirable run at scoring a run right there. At least we're making him work. We'll see if Anderson, our catcher or Uribe can be as disciplined...I'm not counting on it. 24 pitches.
  25. QUOTE(3E8 @ Apr 8, 2007 -> 01:22 PM) Yeah he doesn't call that side of the plate. 20 pitches per inning will work, unfortunately their pen hasn't been much easier...although anything is pretty much easier than Johan, with the exception of Nathan or Reyes last year.
