Who's the odd man out of the rotation next year?
danman31 replied to Jerksticks's topic in Pale Hose Talk
QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Aug 5, 2010 -> 01:14 PM) The thing that makes me the most uncomfortable about his innings is that prior to this season, his innings high (last year) was 89 innings. If he throws 15 innings the rest of the year, that's 130ish innings...which is an increase of 40 innings over his innings total from 2009. In general, the "safe innings increase Verducci rule" is 25 innings/season, so 40 is pushing it. 3 starts in the AFL and now we're talking about 55+ innings increase over 2009. If the AFL counts as innings towards that total, the Cape Cod league should too. After his sophomore year he threw 55 innings at the Cape. That drastically changes your math. -

QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Aug 5, 2010 -> 12:56 PM) Honestly...I'll really be surprised if he does a lot of AFL work this year...he's already thrown a lot of innings, I'm not quite sure how that's a good idea. He's at 113.1 IP between college and the minors right now. Let's say he throws 15 innings the rest of the year. That puts him just short of 130 innings. That's a little on the low end for a full season of minor league starts. The college season starts in February so his innings are over a longer period of time too. By using him as a reliever this year, the inning workload pretty much gets offset. If the Sox want him to compete for a job in the spring, they'll have to get him used to starting again before then. I think the AFL is a good place for him. -

QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Aug 5, 2010 -> 12:16 PM) Sale isn't going to jump to starting in the big leagues without at least some time starting in the minors. That's not how it was originally phrased when his signing went down. "After spending this summer as a reliever, he'll work in the Arizona Fall League as a starter and get the opportunity to make Chicago's rotation in spring training next year." He'll have MLB experience. You can't say definitively that he won't make it. The Sox have the rest of this season as a reliever and the AFL and spring training as a starter to evaluate him. I'd be surprised if he was on the opening day rotation, but we have so little to evaluate him on currently. -
QUOTE (JoeCoolMan24 @ Aug 4, 2010 -> 09:12 PM) 84 K to 23 BB by Rienzo in 72 2/3 IP. Glad someone else noticed. He's been terrific. Great Falls beat Holmberg. Pretty bizarre to face your former teammates in your first game with your new team.

DH Gamethread 2: White Sox (60-45) vs Tigers (52-53) 6:05PM CDT

QUOTE (mcgrad70 @ Aug 3, 2010 -> 08:01 PM) Tonight they look like they just lost 36 of the last 47. And it will be the inability to put teams like this away that will ultimately cost them the division. If the current state of the White Sox is causing you stress, you probably need to never watch baseball again. It gets WAY worse than this. Being in first place, winning the first of a doubleheader and trailing 5-1 in the second shouldn't cause a major rant. -

At least Torres is saving the bullpen. Too bad the offense isn't looking good in this game. -
The Dash are facing former first rounder Aaron Crow in his first start since being demoted from AA. I've been completely shocked by his struggles this year.

QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Aug 3, 2010 -> 03:19 PM) If he's now going to be facing big league hitters...in terms of him being effective this year, yeah it's a worry. Long term development is different. Fair, but I would need to see him a few times to figure out why he's walking guys. Are high level pro hitters not biting on the junk, is he nibbling or is he just struggling with being ready when he comes out of the pen?

QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Aug 3, 2010 -> 03:11 PM) The 6 BB in 10 minor league innings are something of a concern there, but it's so early... He walked 14 in 103 IP this year for Florida Gulf Coast. 9 in 55 IP in the Cape last summer. Of course, he's now relieving against AAA hitters. I wouldn't worry about it yet.

QUOTE (ScottyDo @ Aug 3, 2010 -> 02:29 PM) With his K:BB rate at infinity:4, add me to the list! I just wanna know what that type of stuff looks like. Scouting report says low 90s plus fastball that gets grounders, plus change, average slider, very good control.

FutureSox prospects of the month Andre Rienzo is starting to remind me of DLS a bit. He's older than DLS was when he dominated in Kannapolis, but the numbers and background are similar.

Wilkins was listed in the July prospects of the month on FutureSox. Link

QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Aug 3, 2010 -> 11:14 AM) Any time this subject comes up, it is always interesting to look at the numbers for Magglio at a similar age. http://www.thebaseballcube.com/players/O/m...o-ordonez.shtml Why is Maggs relevant? He hit for much more power than Gilmore has displayed. Maggs hit double digit HR in the minors for four straight years and had a respectable ISO. Gilmore hasn't hit 15 HR as a pro in 1500 AB. QUOTE (Ozzie Ball @ Aug 3, 2010 -> 03:45 AM) I like Wilkins a lot but I would like to see him at Low-A. His numbers in rookie ball, while very impressive, don't mean a lot because he really should be blowing that level of competition away. At least he is showing his power translates to wood though. That's certainly encouraging.

QUOTE (scenario @ Aug 2, 2010 -> 11:04 PM) What? 2 players who are 3 years apart at the same level in the minors are 'comparable'? Despite the younger guy hitting almost 60 points higher in average? And despite Gilmore having a projectable body type likely to grow into power, where Theriot was never expected to or would with his body type? Please. THIS is a great example of the problem with using advanced stats on players in the low minors. The numbers create the image of a logical argument which makes absolutely no sense. Advanced stats? Walks and extra base hits are advanced stats? Assuming Gilmore doesn't MASSIVELY improve on his power it's reasonable. I'd bet Gilmore never makes the Majors.

Restrictions on 1st year prospects?
danman31 replied to ChiliIrishHammock24's topic in FutureSox Board
We don't know of an exact number, and it should vary from pitcher to pitcher anyway, but they tend to be cautious with recent draft picks. Holmberg made half of his appearances in 09 out of the pen. Heidenreich was something similar. With all the guys are adjusting to in pro ball, there's no reason to throw them into the fire with a lot of innings. Once the guys get used to throwing every 5 days as starters, which is probably by the offseason or the following fall, guys will get full innings. -
QUOTE (girlslikebaseballtoo#26 @ Aug 1, 2010 -> 08:41 PM) Petricka to Kanny tomorrow. Good for him. He has pitched well so far.

QUOTE (NorthSideSox72 @ Jul 30, 2010 -> 07:11 AM) The org definitely seems to like Shirek. To me, he's the most interesting SP prospect in the higher levels of the system outside of Hudson right now. Ha and you made me defend putting Shirek in my top 15.

Andy Wilkins hit a 2 out grand slam in the 9th to cap a 5 run 9th and tie the Voyagers' game at 8. Pretty sick.
-
Holmberg got rocked. 7 runs in 2 innings. Managed 3 K and 0 BB though, go figure.
