  1. I went to a Birmingham, Alabama (Magnet) public high school, so the required reading was all horsesh**. Cold Sassy Tree, The Mayor Of Casterbridge and what not. Had to do my own reading, I tested out on a college reading level at age 12.
  2. QUOTE (StrangeSox @ May 10, 2013 -> 10:55 AM) Animal Farm was just a pro-Trot allegory for the rise of Lenin and then the Stalin-Trotsky conflicts. I think a lot of people read their own ideas into that story. I understood that even at age 13.
  3. QUOTE (StrangeSox @ May 10, 2013 -> 01:18 PM) OTOH Nabokov included some statements at the end of Lolita, or at least later editions of it, where he lambastes reviewers who take it as an allegory for the US being violated by Old Europe or vice-versa; he's taking a stance that his work means what he says it means and that reading all that extra stuff into it is nonsense. The Jeremy Irons movie really makes you feel bad for Humbert, even though he's a pederast.
  4. QUOTE (Steve9347 @ May 9, 2013 -> 03:15 PM) I CAN'T STOP LISTENINNNNNNGGGGGGGGGGGGGG TO IT Not metal, fail.
  5. QUOTE (Steve9347 @ May 9, 2013 -> 02:48 PM) Because reading a book is so hard. It's like the internet, but on paper.
  6. QUOTE (StrangeSox @ May 9, 2013 -> 02:59 PM) Somehow I never read Catcher in the Rye, 1984, Animal Farm, Of Mice and Men, To Kill a Mockingbird, any Twain and a bunch of other "everybody reads those in school" books. Animal Farm is damn good.
  7. QUOTE (Brian @ May 9, 2013 -> 08:42 PM) Took a basic Shakespeare class my last year at SIU. Some was tough to interpret. Othello is my fav. Othello owns.
  8. QUOTE (caulfield12 @ May 30, 2012 -> 08:03 PM) Yeah, Gio and Hudson both hurt. But, if we can keep on replacing them with similar production out of unheralded guys like Humber or Quintana, it doesn't really matter. (Or Jenks and Santos in the bullpen, for another example). There's no GM in baseball who hasn't made his share of moves which later look bone-headed. Do you think the Marlins' fans are all going crazy because DeAza has played well for us? Royals'/Twins' fans are upset about losing Humber? Or look at the money the Yankees invest in their starting pitching...even to the point of bringing back veteran Andy Pettite. Are they up in arms they "lost" Quintana or that we seemingly stole him right out from under their noses, or still upset we not only took Contreras, we also got a subsidy back to pay for his salary? And, of course, there's no way to empirically prove they both would have pitched as well in Chicago, or at USCF. Maybe Gio needed the confidence of pitching with a huge park and foul territory to become the pitcher he is...in Chicago, his control issues early in his career and his penchant for surrendering long balls/fly balls might have derailed his career in its early infancy. If anything, the success of Hudson, Gio, Brandon McCarthy or Clayton Richard makes our farm system's productivity look better and makes other teams more willing to trade with us. No, he had it in AA in 2007.

  13. QUOTE (witesoxfan @ Mar 21, 2013 -> 01:42 PM) No because Alan Garner is following me on the Twitter Fantastic, Blake. A fictional character. As opposed to a White Sox pitcher.
  14. Hector Santiago just followed me on Twitter. Jelly?
  15. QUOTE (Milkman delivers @ Mar 17, 2013 -> 12:31 AM) If you're that upset about something this trivial, I imagine you must live in Pleasantville Not upset about it. I figured it was kids who did it, just thought I'd share since it's a funny story and see if other people drew the same conclusion that I had. My wife on the other hand was very creeped out by the incident. I know as a teenager, I had people draw dicks in the dirt on my car, but not to the level of detail this one was. I think that's the weird part to me, someone took their time with it. Seems odd to me.
  16. QUOTE (MexSoxFan#1 @ Mar 16, 2013 -> 03:43 PM) Kids being kids. If no other incidents have happened since September, I wouldn't worry about it. I wonder why it took you so long to post this? Has it been bothering you or something. Sort of, I guess I'm paranoid. Just always wondering WTF, you know. I think it's the boldness of it. It had to have taken at least 5 or more minutes to draw. It was very detailed. My dog is going crazy on the other side of the door and there was no way to be sure no one was home.
  17. Yeah, I know this is a weird topic, but I've been confused by this and I thought I'd get some opinions about it. It happened back in September. My wife, my son and I all left the house one night for no more than an hour to visit her stepsister in the hospital who had just given birth. We did not go far down the road at all. We did not broadcast this either. We live in a well lit cul-de-sac, in fact there is an old school lamp post at the end of our driveway. I cannot remember if the porch lights were on or not. Our neighbors on either side were not home during the time we were gone. My car was still in the driveway, all the lights were on inside as well as the TV. Anyway, when we returned, we discovered a d*** had been drawn with someone's finger on the glass of the screen door. And it wasn't just a quick drawing, it was anatomically correct, large and long. Not triumphant like Jonah Hill's drawings in Superbad, but very detailed. The reason why I know this happened while we were gone was because our dog was very anxious and continued to stare at the door long after we had gotten home. I hear him go crazy barking even when I open the screen door. When you're all done laughing, I'll continue... Okay, the reason I mention it is because I'm wondering if it means anything or if it was just opportunistic juvenile deliquents. We didn't see anybody near our house before we left, but it was dark. And I learned later that there had been some kids arrested in the neighborhood for breaking into houses, amongst other things. That seems like the logical explanation, less likely than someone trying to break in, giving up and doing some art or someone we know waiting until we leave to do something. Too random for it to be personal. Or could it be a stalker of some kind? I looked all around the outside of the house and at our cars and saw nothing else. The only other conclusion I could make for the motivation is because I have a Seahawks license plate frame on my car and it was a couple of days after the game with the Packers. We have since turned on all the outside lights around the house at night and nothing has happened. Anybody have any ideas or am I just over thinking it?
  18. QUOTE (Swingandalongonetoleft @ Mar 16, 2013 -> 03:06 PM) Had gallstones, and subsequently, my gallbladder removed. It feels glorious to move. siiiike Had that done in 2004. Gallstones are a motherf***er.

  22. I mentioned this when the Angels cut him loose. He's only 23, so there's still time.
