QUOTE (Chisoxfn @ Apr 6, 2009 -> 03:04 PM) I think it is Nathan Jones. I'd look it up but some sites are blocked at my new job. Heck, I probably won't be on much in general anymore, but today is a pretty introductory day. He's going to be repeating his level (I think it's either Bham or Winston Salem). I overheard the story between one scout and another as I watched Jones pitch last week, basically saying how the scouts called up Buddy Bell after seeing him whiff the side in two straight innings. The scouts basically said, who is this guy, and why exactly isn't he in the majors. Buddy responded with, check out his numbers and asked if he was throwing strikes, which the scout responded, well he is today. I also was reading something the other day and discovered that Baseball America ranked him as having the best curve in the org and after seeing it I would completely agree. The day I saw him his fastball was nothing special, but apparently he had pitched the day before and was consistently in the upper 90's, topping up at 99. I think he might be coming to B'ham.

QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Apr 6, 2009 -> 02:34 PM) The specific reason I ask is that a week ago I posted an ESPN piece suggesting that the U.S. was going to use immigration law to go after some of the people involved in the Wilder scam. So, the players are here illegally? I thought they were here on work visas?

QUOTE (qwerty @ Apr 6, 2009 -> 02:15 PM) The whole being 28 thing is the story behind that, likely. I didn't know that being 28 for a pitcher was the end of the road.
-
QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Apr 6, 2009 -> 02:23 PM) Any chance that's an immigration issue? Could be, good point. Another part of the definition of the restricted list is an unexcused absence.

QUOTE (Dick Allen @ Apr 6, 2009 -> 01:41 PM) Where he'll be managed by his dad. Yep, sorry I forgot that part.

QUOTE (NorthSideSox72 @ Apr 6, 2009 -> 01:07 PM) Wow. Wasn't Hernandez looked at as a catcher of the future, at one point? He just never seemed to live up to the hype. He was exposed to the Rule 5 draft back in December. Reading between the lines, I've gathered he is a bit flaky, so he may have gone AWOL.
-
Catcher Francisco Hernandez and LHP Eric Stephenson have been placed on the restricted list. This means they either went AWOL from the organization or retired.

Raines Jr. was released and signed with the Newark Bears.

QUOTE (Rex Hudler @ Apr 5, 2009 -> 11:22 PM) Have you heard if Paiml will be in Birmingham? I really hope he is. Greg was a batboy for the Barons for several years while younger, so he knows the Hoover Met (I don't call it RP) very well. It would be great to see the kid make it back as a player. I've heard that Paiml will likely be in B'ham. Considering he is 24 going on 25, it's time to push him up. He spent most of last year in W-S, and he did fairly well. Although he may be more of a backup at 2B, SS & 3B. I knew about his time as a batboy, plus he went to Hoover High, and was a 4 year starter at Alabama. I hoping to see him as well, the only local player we've had since Wassermann is Eric Hollis, and he's basically a bullpen/emergency catcher. Paiml did get into one spring game with the big league club last week.

Hey Santo, You might want to update your avatar...here's a suggestion...
-
Keep in mind, he's a good month and a heartbeat away from being called up. He took his lumps, let's embrace him into the organization. He was once a promising pitcher. But, he's still only 27 and is a lefty, there's still potential.

QUOTE (Leonard Zelig @ Apr 5, 2009 -> 07:48 PM) Did you use the Sieve of Eratosthenes to determine that? Way to name drop an ancient Greek mathematician.

QUOTE (NorthSideSox72 @ Apr 5, 2009 -> 03:46 PM) They don't typically announce the FULL rosters until ST is completely over. And then it will take a few more days, probably. Last year they were fully announced by the day before opening night. Just anxious to know...figured at least the Barons roster would be released by today.
-
It seems that's the case, he's listed as #39 now instead of #17.
-
I'm dying to know who's going to be on what teams. I thought the rosters would be set by now. Nothing yet, and the Barons have an exhibition game tomorrow night.

QUOTE (Dick Allen @ Apr 5, 2009 -> 10:27 AM) The White Sox signed Jimmy Gobble for Charlotte. Released by KC and I believe Texas doesn't sound good on a pitcher's resume. Once highly thought of, now just hanging on by a thread. I had suggested that when he was released.

QUOTE (WSoxMatt @ Apr 4, 2009 -> 03:39 PM) Game is on FSN AZ CH 686 for DirecTV Of course it is, and I'm at work. F*** -
QUOTE (caulfield12 @ Apr 3, 2009 -> 11:14 PM) Getz and Ramirez have really been raking recently...Getz almost ended up with a 4/5 and 3-4 rbi's if not for a really good basket catch by Chris Young to end the last inning. Quentin also seems to be picking it up as well, although Fields and Konerko are cooling off quite a bit. Who knows what will happen in 35 degree temperatures all next week, it will be brutal for the hitters. I bet Viciedo and Beckham will be at least a LITTLE happy their season starts on Thursday night in Birmingham. It's been mild here lately. Beckham and Viciedo will have to play Monday as well in an exhibition game. The past two seasons, the first week has been fairly cold down here.

Isn't what you want out of a leadoff hitter is to hit .300 and get on base? Does Wise give good h*** or does he have blackmail on Ozzie and KW? Honestly, I'm sure Wise can be a good 9th hitter, but it's time to face reality.
-
QUOTE (southsideirish71 @ Apr 3, 2009 -> 09:15 PM) Fixed. Getz should hit 1st and Player X/David Cook/Gregor Blanco/Brian Anderson should hit 9th. More fixed.
-
QUOTE (southsideirish71 @ Apr 3, 2009 -> 08:54 PM) Getz with a one out double in the first. Never left 2nd after that. So, Wise is an automatic out, then Getz is the real leadoff hitter? Maybe Getz should hit 1st and Wise 9th.
-
Maybe the White Sox should inquire about Gregor Blanco's availability now that he's lost his job to Jordan Schaefer and has been demoted.

QUOTE (Chisoxfn @ Apr 3, 2009 -> 05:37 PM) I watched Shelby take BP last week and he had a lot of pop. I love this guy as a prospect. I wouldn't call him an A prospect, but I'd call him a guy that could come up and shock a lot of people given that I think most of the baseball world doesn't know who he is (ie, he's not a top 25 or top 50 prospect currently). He is a top 25 for the White Sox though, but I know what you mean. I've been a fan of his since he was at Kentucky, so I was psyched when the White Sox drafted him. Can't wait to see him play for the Barons.

QUOTE (bmags @ Apr 2, 2009 -> 03:44 PM) I heard he's in the running for our leadoff spot. Touche.
