He's been moved from Charlotte's roster to B'ham's roster. Wow, the loaded Barons just got more loaded.

Rosenthal: Melky Cabrera is on the block; Sox would be good fit
JPN366 replied to DaTank's topic in Pale Hose Talk
Well, you have to consider that GMJ is in a much more crowded situation than Melky. Melky's a bad month by Brett Gardner away from reclaiming CF with the Yankees. He might actually cost the White Sox more in talent. What if the Angels paid half and the White Sox took on the other half? Say the Angels pay him for this year and half of 2010? That way the White Sox don't have to take the hit this year, see the results of 2009, then decide on the futures of Thome, Konerko & Dye by possibly clearing their salaries. And, if he struggles in 2010, they can drop him and only have to pay him for 2011. But, since it's a possible deal with the Angels, it won't happen more than likely. -
QUOTE (103 mph screwball @ Mar 25, 2009 -> 02:08 PM) Even more if it is in a slayer t-shirt. Now that's damn near impossible. I'd have to be the one wearing it, and I'm not a fan.

QUOTE (letsgoarow @ Mar 25, 2009 -> 01:55 PM) From what ive heard around the organization... we wont be very good this year. We have some pretty good pitchers (Rollins, Helickson) but offensively we will be terrible. You should take the trip to Montgomery to see a game some time. Well, I was just trying to stir up the competitive juices...hey maybe Tim Beckham will be there soon. You can't be too upset considering that you've had Evan Longoria and David Price there in the past two years. I'd like to come down there sometime, but since I hardly miss a Barons home game, it would probably only be if I happened to be down there. Although, we always have a contingent of Biscuits fans at the Met when they're in town.

What kind of dap would you guys give me if I can get a picture of me and Beckham giving the rock n' roll devil horns?

QUOTE (letsgoarow @ Mar 25, 2009 -> 12:57 PM) Excited hes in Birmingham. Ill get to see him play a bunch in Montgomery. If anyone lives in the area let me know and i can get you some tickets to the Biscuits v. Birmingham game. The Barons are gonna be loaded this year. They're gonna burn some Biscuits. Montgomery's in for a fight for the 1st half crown.

QUOTE (NorthSideSox72 @ Mar 25, 2009 -> 01:09 PM) I have tried to think of the reasons why a guy with Cook's numbers the last few years wouldn't at least get a look and an ST invite, given the problem in CF. Its not age (alone), he's younger than Owens and Wise. Its obviously not performance. That leaves these candidates, as far as I can tell: 1. He pissed someone off (or more than one someone) 2. The organization soured on him some time ago and simply isn't willing to be open to guys figuring it out later 3. There is something mechanical or otherwise the Sox have seen in him that they feel means he won't succeed 4. The organization has decided that they HAVE to have a speedy leadoff guy in CF I can think of no other reasonably possible scenarios. I'm guessing its a combo of 2 and 4. I think it's just 4. Because he has great character and is all business on the field, so 1 is off the table. It would be irresponsible to have the mindset of 2. I never saw anything that lead me to believe it's 3 because the guy is an all around great ballplayer. He hustles in the OF, and his approach at the plate fits the situation. It's either 4, or they're just being stubborn and won't except that Anderson and Owens aren't the answer. Or, they're being snobs and won't give a guy like Cook the chance. I've seen that attitude about Cook from people on this very forum, so I can only imagine the attitude about him from the likes of KW or Ozzie.

QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Mar 25, 2009 -> 07:34 AM) It'll be Jerry Owens hopefully. If the White Sox are serious about finding a CF/Leadoff hitter, then not having David Cook lead off in Charlotte would be a mistake. Owens has already bottomed out in AAA, so Cook deserves a shot as a leadoff hitter in Charlotte. It seems obvious now to me that Jerry Owens peaked in AA in 2005. David Cook is a great situational hitter and has incredible plate discipline. Isn't that what you want in a leadoff hitter? Or do you want Owens popping up to the third basemen in foul territory 4 times a game in Chicago or Charlotte?

QUOTE (DBAHO @ Mar 24, 2009 -> 12:54 PM) KW should be talking to Frank Wren from the Braves right now. They have 3 candidates for the CF job, and Gregor Blanco is a guy who could leadoff for the Sox for the next 5 seasons, and he's shown he can get on base at the major league level in his rookie season. I second the notion for Gregor Blanco, glad to see I'm not the only one who thinks he'd suit the White Sox needs.

QUOTE (chunk23 @ Mar 25, 2009 -> 11:41 AM) I'm excited that Beckham is going to AA, I'll manage to see him in a few games. I don't mean to rub it in everybody's faces...well, I don't think he'll be here longer than the first half. I'd be shocked if he doesn't hit his way out of B'ham.

$10 says that David Cook hits leadoff in Charlotte's lineup at the start of the season.

There's a man, with a certain name, that would be a great Plan D...(see below)

QUOTE (Kalapse @ Mar 23, 2009 -> 11:57 AM) The Rays returned Derek Rodriguez to the Sox after taking him in the Rule V draft. That's fine, just as long as the Orioles don't return Robert Valido. But, he was taken in the minor league phase, so I don't think the same rule applies.

QUOTE (NorthSideSox72 @ Mar 23, 2009 -> 11:14 AM) One more update. Mark Gonzales at the Trib responded to an email from me, saying Miranda was traded for "future considerations", much like Stewart was. Seems like Kenny Williams is setting up some teams to call in favors later on. Sergio Santos, Sergio Miranda & Chris Stewart all for "future considerations."

QUOTE (BearSox @ Mar 22, 2009 -> 06:31 PM) Isn't Ricks capable of playing multiple positions? If so, he'll find a spot on the bench for either Charlotte or Birmingham. Are minor league roster limits 25 also? EDIT: I found my answer. If anyone else is interested, the link is: http://www.bizofbaseball.com/index.php?opt...y&Itemid=75 That AA roster limit thing is a b**ch. At least in the Southern League, the 23 man limit seems like it hasn't been enforced over the past few years. I've noticed that the Barons had 24 active most of the season the past three years.

QUOTE (NorthSideSox72 @ Mar 22, 2009 -> 06:10 PM) Ricks isn't going to start anywhere, so they'll put him whereever needs a backup. Is Ricks good defensively? If so, B-Ham seems logical. Then again, where does Innouye go? Is he still going to catch, or move to another position? I assume Dubler will start in Kanny. I've always heard Ed Collari, the W-S radio guy, say Ricks is a very good defensive catcher. He could back-up/mentor Flowers for B'ham. Ricks has been in W-S for like 3 years, so he deserves a promotion. Hernandez probably will remain in W-S for 2009, John Curtis will probably move up to W-S. Inouye will probably start in Kanny, unless W-S carries 3 catchers. I have noticed that the tthree top levels have always carried a third "injured" catcher who is on the reserve list most of the time unless there is a need for him. The best example of that has been Charlotte and B'ham the last two years. In B'ham, they have Eric Hollis, who always seems to have a "sore back" and is on the DL unless he is needed for depth. He is coincidently from a town not far from B'ham. He played at Samford with Ehren Wassermann. Ryan Smith at Charlotte did the same thing all of 2007 and part of 2008 until he apparently retired.

Look back through the box scores and you can probably come up with a list of possible players who aren't on the 40-man or the NRI.

QUOTE (BearSox @ Mar 22, 2009 -> 06:42 PM) If Beckham goes to Charlotte like I think he will, I think that makes Lillibridge the 2B for Charlotte. I wonder where Javier Castillo figures in. He isn't much of a prospect, but I liked what I saw from him in spring, perhaps a future bench player. Do we keep him in Charlotte and have him work at more positions like SS, 2B, 1B, OF, etc, or do we put him back in Birmingham and let him play everyday at 3B? Javy can play 1B, but I don't think he's nimble enough to play the middle. He's a very large man, maybe he could play RF and/or LF.
-
QUOTE (BearSox @ Mar 22, 2009 -> 03:22 PM) yep, looks like Lucy and Armstong to Charlotte. Oh well, I always liked Stewart and I hope him the best of luck. I guess that means they will promote Francisco Hernandez to B'ham, unless Adam Ricks is ticketed to back up/mentor Flowers.
-
QUOTE (Thunderbolt @ Mar 22, 2009 -> 05:20 PM) Is Flowers definitely going to AA or is he joining Danks and the Purple Phallus? Flowers spent all last year in the Carolina League with Myrtle Beach, so it's safe to assume he'll be assigned to B'ham based on progression.

QUOTE (NorthSideSox72 @ Mar 22, 2009 -> 05:03 PM) Ginter at 2B for Charlotte? I'd guess its Nix, or V-Merc. Also, with Stewart gone, its Lucy to Charlotte more likely now, as I thought. Lucy in B-Ham would basically be saying, your career is done, go teach Tyler. I still think Lucy has better potential than Armstrong, and judging by how quick they moved armstrong to the minor league camp, I think the organization agrees. Unfortunately the most clutch hitter I've ever seen, Victor Mercedes, is no longer in the organization.

QUOTE (tommy @ Mar 22, 2009 -> 02:31 PM) Chris Stewart traded to the Yankees for future considerations. I guess that blows my whole theory of Donny Lucy backing up/mentoring Tyler Flowers in B'ham.
