QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Aug 6, 2009 -> 10:50 AM) I read the article. It is circular logic at its best. People have tried to solve Afghanistan. They failed, therefore everyone will fail in Afghanistan. Great. The funny part was in the article they blamed the failure of our government to protect us, which has failed us many times, but they seem to still think they are going to save us all, despite the history that tells us they can't protect us all. The funny thing is, if a stable government had been in Afghanistan, we wouldn't have had to worry about another inevitable security failure in our own government. We actually kind of created that Frankenstein... not intentionally but we had no endgame in our minds when we were doing it. Now this has been going on for 30 years and it doesn't look like it's going to end anytime soon. It's fair to ask whether it's even worth the effort right now. Like I said I'm still optimistic about it.

QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Aug 6, 2009 -> 10:44 AM) about 3000 American's died on American soil because we ignored the mess there for so long. Not having thousands of American's die in the future to me is the very definition of "something to gain". I tend to agree but it's really not about that. It's not about what we have to gain, it's about whether it's even possible.

QUOTE (BigSqwert @ Aug 6, 2009 -> 10:38 AM) Countless empires have failed there in the past. This won't be any different. Yeah... Afghanistan and Iraq are not really comparable. For as s***ty a country as it is, Iraq actually had trained professionals and some educated people in the country, so there was a base of people that could get stuff done. Afghanistan has nothing like that, it's a big clusterf***. Everybody that had some kind of value left the country in the 80s when the Soviets were there and who would want to go back now? The best we can do is to not leave things worse than when we started.

I alternate between thinking the whole thing is a waste of time and thinking it's just a big s*** sandwich we have to chew and swallow.

I was browsing an Angels board and they sounded pretty worried that KW has had his eye on Figgins for a while, and that this was probably going to raise the asking price for him.

Let's go for the sweep.

QUOTE (joeynach @ Aug 6, 2009 -> 12:58 AM) OMG the sox beat a pitcher they haven't seen before That's the first time I've seen them do that in I don't know how long.

QUOTE (Steve9347 @ Aug 5, 2009 -> 11:40 PM) Bulls***. Having him in the fold to compete for the spot would be great in a one-year extension, and you couldn't beat him as a 4th OF. His approach is entirely new, and he's thriving. When healthy, he's always been good. QUOTE (rangercal @ Aug 5, 2009 -> 11:53 PM) ^^^^ I'm getting tired of all the f***ing Einsteins around here who get out their calculators and fancy statistics and bash pods. All I know is when he is healthy, we win. Stick to posting on message boards and let Kenny Williams run this ship. I am so thankful Kenny runs this ship instead of all the Pods,Floyd and Thome bashers. ...when healthy. Why do you guys suppose the org. had to get rid of him in the first place? I'm fine with bringing him in for another year, but they'd better have a plan B.

QUOTE (Thunderbolt @ Aug 5, 2009 -> 11:29 PM) Hmmm… anyone remember a certain someone who said something about Floyd destroying a free-swinging Angel’s lineup? Neither do I. I missed the game, but am enormously please at what I’m seeing from this team. You said he was going to piss his pants. You have to say this again, but about Danks.

QUOTE (EvilJester99 @ Aug 5, 2009 -> 10:58 PM) Welcome to the mad house. Also, if you couldn't tell there are real high hopes for Beckham and some are just insane at this point. Just glad to see he is playing great so far. I agree, a career batting average of .800 is a tad unrealistic. I'd be surprised if he even breaks .600 to be honest.

QUOTE (lostfan @ Aug 5, 2009 -> 08:49 AM) Let's take the series. Cha-ching. I picked a good time to be starting game threads.

QUOTE (Markbilliards @ Aug 5, 2009 -> 10:38 PM) Jenks still has a rock jammed in his dick. I don't know why but this made me lol.

QUOTE (mr_genius @ Aug 5, 2009 -> 09:58 PM) trade him. failed 2/3 times. He was just being courteous. He's a modest guy, doesn't like having to show up other teams unless he has to.

QUOTE (Princess Dye @ Aug 5, 2009 -> 09:57 PM) Looking forward to being proven wrong on this and many more days I don't mind you being wrong if it means Jim Thome hits more home runs.

QUOTE (Stocking @ Aug 5, 2009 -> 09:55 PM) whats beckham today? 1-3 with a double.

QUOTE (Dick Allen @ Aug 5, 2009 -> 09:53 PM) For everyone saying if the White Sox made the playoffs, they would have no shot of winning anything, they took 3 of 4 from the Yankees and if they win tonight 4 of 5 from the Angels. I think they would have a chance, especially if Peavy can come back at full strength. Peavy being in the rotation really does change the game some.
-
QUOTE (Dick Allen @ Aug 5, 2009 -> 09:50 PM) For a guy with all the homers he has, and as streaky of a hitter he is, particularly homers, Thome has never hit 3 in a game. Until today. Gordon Beckham will blow in the direction of a Jim Thome fly ball and it will travel over the fence.

Too bad I won't live long enough to see us figure out how to terraform Mars, that would be awesome.

QUOTE (bighurt574 @ Aug 5, 2009 -> 03:11 PM) Relax. I only mentioned Pujols as an example of consistency after a strong rookie year. Beckham is no Pujols, and apart from some jokes, no one here thinks Beckham is as good as Pujols (I think). No, Beckham is not Pujols, nor is he as good as Pujols. He's better.

QUOTE (Nixon @ Aug 5, 2009 -> 03:12 PM) John Bolton is hilarious. So let these two girls rot in N. Korea while we keep not talking to NK. That really worked out well on the nuke program. Also, it looks like NK never intended on keeping these girls. The "labor" part of their sentence was never enforced, they were never sent to the real labor camps that make Auschwitz look like a day at the beach. NK probably is playing this completely for the photo op. Didn't a similar thing happen with the crew of the Pueblo? The US signed a bulls*** letter, said it was a bulls*** letter and NK released the crew because they got a bulls*** letter and a nice shiny battleship out of it? lol @ calling negotiations impulsive.

QUOTE (dpd9189 @ Aug 5, 2009 -> 03:04 PM) As much as I like Beckham and I agree that he is the best player on the Sox right now, don't compare him to Pujols. Pujols is in a league of his own. It's a league far below Beckham. Beckham already HAS made Pujols look like DeWayne Wise. Albert Pujols wants to be Gordon Beckham when he grows up.
-
QUOTE (StrangeSox @ Aug 5, 2009 -> 02:58 PM) Gordon Beckham will make Albert Pujols look like Dewayne Wise at the plate. WILL?
-
QUOTE (MHizzle85 @ Aug 5, 2009 -> 11:50 AM) Actually, I think they have something called the field pass. It's either for radio or tv or both. I vaguely remember seeing an option to buy last year. That's what I was talking about, I think you can't get it in the US.

Well in fairness, Iran did just arrest 3 Americans, so maybe she was confused.
