QUOTE (greg775 @ Jun 3, 2009 -> 09:38 PM) My god. We get a break in the schedule and are down through half this game. If we lose this game, that is disgraceful to drop 2 of 3 to the A's at home. Get your head out, white Sox and win this game. Dude it's a 2-run game in the 6th, settle down

QUOTE (SI1020 @ Jun 3, 2009 -> 09:36 PM) I find the Pythagorean wins formula to be one of the more worthless of the newer Saber stats that many are in awe of. I was gonna start a thread about how I hated BABIP (for hitters) a month or so ago.

QUOTE (chisox2334 @ Jun 3, 2009 -> 09:22 PM) im sorry but platoon excuse or any other why brian dosent do well is out the window. If anderson was that good their be no doubt he be starting, no other guys being platooned with and everyone would be happy. He hits like s*** vs. lefties (something like .150 this year) so of course it makes perfect sense to platoon him against them.
-
QUOTE (chisox2334 @ Jun 3, 2009 -> 09:19 PM) this is why no one should be saying anderson or wise should be starting. Since Quentin is hurt, who the hell you going to have starting? Cmon people.

Is anyone else completely sick of Beyonce and thinks the quality of her music has fallen off a cliff?

QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Jun 3, 2009 -> 04:18 PM) (Checks to see that its the Dem thread)...or, you could just be working as a banker and realizing that you can rape the company when no one's looking and leave the government holding the bill now that all the rules are gone. You're just pissed you didn't think of it first.

QUOTE (StrangeSox @ Jun 3, 2009 -> 04:10 PM) Basically, publicly-held companies have a duty to protect the best interests of their shareholders/ bondholders (unless you're GM! ). So, they're required to earn a good return-on-investment. I'm not a banker or financial guy, so I could have this completely backwards. ss2k5, nss, ck or some others might be able to explain it better/ correctly. Oh, I thought that's what you were saying but I wasn't sure. But yeah, absolutely. If you run a large for-profit business and you aren't trying to make profits, you're either a philanthropist, you're extremely generous to your employees, or you're just really dumb.

QUOTE (Reddy @ Jun 3, 2009 -> 03:57 PM) i've said in the past that i'm a big fan of that ole hyperbole. but the point is, the fact that he is light years better defensively than Wise AND has an average in the .260s AND has a .350 OBP makes this an obvious, obvious, obvious decision that our manager is somehow ignoring. And to respond again to fathom's point, how is a disparity THAT huge not something that should give one pause? Wise isn't as bad as I thought he'd be out there but he sure does a fine job of making his fielding of routine fly balls look pretty.

QUOTE (StrangeSox @ Jun 3, 2009 -> 04:02 PM) Doesn't their fiduciary duty legally obligate them to pursue higher profits? Dumb that down for me please lol @ the irony of me asking you to dumb this down, immediately following the last post I made

QUOTE (StrangeSox @ Jun 3, 2009 -> 04:00 PM) What they ought to do isn't necessarily what they actually do. If you don't turn a profit, you'll be out of business. Ergo, media companies are looking to turn profits. I would hope that, as a society, we would value accurate, relevant information and discussion/ debate highly so that the most honest and objective media outlets perform the best, but I think we can clearly see that this isn't the case. We prefer stories about Bristol Palin's baby mama drama and we like our political news condensed into 5-10 second headlines to meet our attention spans, which collectively are slightly longer than that of a retarded goldfish. We like hearing about Paris Hilton or Rihanna. We protest that this isn't the case, but ratings show otherwise.

QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Jun 3, 2009 -> 03:48 PM) The media is not there just to make money. The media is given an extraordinary role in society; it is specifically protected by the first amendment of the constitution of the united states not so that it can make money, but to allow for an informed populace. The electronic media; television and radio, are able to use the public airwaves at below what that space should reasonably cost because they are expected to perform a public service; to allow for an informed populace. Saying that the media's purpose is to generate profit is to ignore the fact that the government has granted it special permission on repeated occasion on the grounds that it performs a vital public service. Technically true, but as a corporate entity (or series of entities) its primary motivation/bottom line is to make money. Which explains so many things. If Obama was a Republican, and was as popular as he is now, he would be getting nonsense headlines like "Obama likes cheeseburgers" or "Obama's wife wears a short skirt."
-
QUOTE (Soxbadger @ Jun 3, 2009 -> 03:36 PM) I just dont get why people even care what the Media does. The media is there to make money, not to report the news. As capitalists it should be understood that what they report is based on their desire to make money, not on their desire to give information to the public. As such any news report should always be looked at with extreme skepticism as its main purpose is to generate money, not to inform people. So why is Obama getting headlines for nonsense? Because that is what is selling right now. I've said this many times.

QUOTE (Reddy @ Jun 3, 2009 -> 03:47 PM) Defense alone renders this an inaccurate post. Even if Brian batted .000 he'd be more valuable than Dweezy and his terrible reads and jumps. Hyperbole at its finest

QUOTE (Cknolls @ Jun 3, 2009 -> 03:11 PM) Then what could possibly cause Obama to refuse to release them? Obama didn't refuse to release them, the CIA did. Obama could've superseded it if he wanted to but why? It's a bulls*** claim, and a distraction, if it was so important to Cheney maybe he should've released it while he was still in office. It's not even substantive enough to be called a lie, honestly.

QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Jun 3, 2009 -> 02:46 PM) Yes, I know it is crazy, but I find acts of violence less sporting than not shaking someones hand after a series. If you like, I could just punch you, but shake your hand afterwards if that would make you feel better. Actually, I'll swing at you first after we argue, then you can punch me and I'll call you out on it, for accuracy's sake. You know, I'm not going to excuse that kind of behavior, but this stuff is so much more common than some of you guys act like it is. Big macho athletes + huge egos + adrenaline and testosterone + always being around one another = occasional scuffles. Torii Hunter punched Justin Morneau in the face once. They were buddies after that. Jordan punched Kerr. A couple years later in the huddle he said he wanted Kerr to take the game-winning shot to win the Finals. Olin Kreutz punched Fred Miller in the face in '05, then both of them made up and played lights out the rest of the year.

QUOTE (Stan Bahnsen @ Jun 3, 2009 -> 02:36 PM) I should also say that BA's so-called improvement during '06 is vastly overrated. He was getting far fewer AB's by August, and he'd given up any semblance of power merely trying to make contact. He's doing the same thing this year, so this talk of 15-20 HR, 75-80 RBI is a pipe dream. That said, he should be playing everyday, or nearly every day on THIS team, and it pisses me off that he isn't. Now is the time to get him the AB's he needs, I agree. I just want him getting on base in the 9 hole, and playing stellar D. When JorDanks arrives, BA can be a quality 4th OF, and defensive replacement for one of the corners. I'm equally pissed that Chris Getz is not getting a fair shake currently, being needlessly platooned. He had to pretty much completely tear down his approach and mechanics and build it up again, and start from square 1 with the basics (i.e., hitting for contact). It's been mentioned before but this is not something that should've taken until the major leagues to identify.

QUOTE (The Ginger Kid @ Jun 3, 2009 -> 02:06 PM) you mean how he was handed the starting job in spring and by June still couldn't hit his weight? He was god f***ing awful, then given an ultimatum by Ozzie, then turned around and hit .300 for about 2 months before he cooled off again at the end. It's almost like that never happened though. That was followed up in '07 by the pretty disastrous decision to use Erstad. That said, '06 has nothing to do with this anymore.

QUOTE (Reddy @ Jun 3, 2009 -> 02:17 PM) i can't stand you people who take this holier-than-thou attitude in threads like this. criticizing US for criticizing the team/player/management decision or what have you. we are allowed to not be all buttercups and roses all the time. we're allowed to be unhappy with bonehead decisions by our manager, and the playing of Dewayne Wise over Brian Anderson is one of these. If you don't have anything to add to the discussion, dont say anything. Brian Anderson is a better baseball player than Dewayne Wise, and thus, should be the one on the field. It's as simple as that. Thank you And I'm not even one of the negative nancies.

QUOTE (kapkomet @ Jun 3, 2009 -> 02:05 PM) It's all subjective. But of course, if the GOP is saying it, it must be bulls***. If a Democrat says it, it must be the truth. You don't even offer the pretense that you're trying to actually address points anymore.

QUOTE (kapkomet @ Jun 3, 2009 -> 12:36 PM) http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20090603/ap_on_...us_nuclear_list Way to go. But dammit, we better not release anything of value with regard to proving any GOP person right. Oh the irony. a. lol @ you drawing that comparison. Some member of a government agency f***ed up, that's not the same thing as the president authorizing its release. b. I think you're trying to defend Cheney here, but in reality he is making s*** up. I don't know if he convinced himself that was true or what, but even if it was, it's not like that's something that can just be proven with a simple document request, and the concept doesn't even logically follow anyway. Don't take my word for it, take Director Mueller's word:

QUOTE (Lemon_44 @ Jun 3, 2009 -> 01:01 PM) that doesn't make any sense to me. First off, if Guillen wanted Anderson off the roster, he'd be off the roster. I don't think he needs an excuse. Secondly, OG would be much happier if Anderson would be hitting .320, showing some power, and playing heads up baseball. I'm sure Guillen wants to win as many games as possible and,if BA gave him the best chance to do it,he'd be out there playing everyday. I mean do you really think Ozzie is making out the lineup card saying,"you know we have a better chance to win the Anderson out there, but i don't like him so i'll put Wise out there and hope we win anyway" ? He didn't like Cabrera last year but OC played about every game. You're saying you expect Anderson to hit like Magglio Ordonez? Mark Teixeira?
-
QUOTE (Special K @ Jun 3, 2009 -> 12:50 PM) I love Anderson as much as the next guy, but Guillen has a never ending vendetta against him, and that's what pisses me off with all this. It's not that Andersno is slightly better than Wise (even though he is WAY better). The better player should be out there, not the guy Guillen likes more for whatever reason. ' Guillen is trying to get Wise a lot of playing time now for these two weeks b/c if Wise gets hot, when Quentin comes up, he finally has an excuse to get Anderson off this roster. Guillen is sitting there and praying Wise has the 2 weeks of his life so nobody can say anything when he keeps Wise instead of BA. Unfortunately, Wise just isn't good enough to do it. I'm all for saying that Ozzie likes Wise more than his play justifies, but this is a bit much.

QUOTE (scenario @ Jun 3, 2009 -> 12:16 PM) I swear there should be a law against using small samples to support arguments. How about... last year in a larger sample Wise hit righties better and Anderson hit lefties better? That's not really that small of a sample size for Anderson although he's not going to hit lefties .150 all year. But last year, before Ozzie started playing Anderson exclusively vs. lefties, the R-L splits looked about the same before his numbers took a dive. I even started a thread about it. He saw only sporadic at-bats against RHP and his long, loopy swing returned. At the beginning of the year he had a completely different stance and approach, but Swisher was firmly entrenched as the starter. Wise's 29 ABs this year as a small sample size is irrelevant. You don't need numbers from this year to tell you he isn't good.
