Dayan or Beckham at 3rd if Fields can't do it

QUOTE (Kalapse @ Jun 1, 2009 -> 01:51 PM) There was a big problem with relying on Getz and Wise, you're praying to catch lightning in a bottle and leaving yourself with no good high OBP replacement when they fail. Sure you move them down in the order once they prove they're not up to the task but then you're just replacing them with another half-assed solution. Kenny Williams did a dreadful job addressing the situation this offseason, he went in to ST with hopes that one of the four bad/ill-prepared in-house candidates caught fire and made him look like a genius, unfortunately for him and the team this was not going to happen. Relying on the likes of Wise, Owens, Lillibridge and Getz to grab hold of the leadoff spot for a full year is just kind of sad for a team with a close to $100M payroll. Even still, Getz was a far better option than either Wise, Lillibridge, or Owens. He should not have been there, but he was pigeonholed there. He doesn't lose points as a player in my eyes for hitting his wall when he did. -
lots of love for Richard here. I guess it comes down to performance vs. expectations. Performance, Buehrle is the best, but he is supposed to be. Expectations, it has to be Richard.

Pitchers who give up runs are stupid, I thought that was obvious. -
QUOTE (Jordan4life @ Jun 1, 2009 -> 12:40 PM) What's funny is that a lot of Cavs fans have even called Lebron out about this. Yet we've got Bulls fans over here saying that it's perfectly OK for Lebron to act the way he has. "He's human!" GMAB. I just don't get why people are going to extremes to defend him here - it's a basic part of being an adult IMO. If any superstar did it, they would be called out. LeBron happens to be one of, if not the biggest superstar in the league, so yes, it's going to get a lot of attention. Plus he really made it worse with his explanation, if he'd been up front and was like "my emotions got the better of me and I wanted to get out of there" or something people would've been like "oh, i see, he's human" but instead he chose to be a b**** about it.

GM formally files for bankruptcy. It's funny how the market doesn't even seem to care, it's up 213 right now.

I wanted to go with Thome but Konerko's been a model of consistency this year. As for the pitchers, Mark Buehrle, and it's not really even close.

QUOTE (ChiSox_Sonix @ Jun 1, 2009 -> 11:46 AM) Well I think that is actually completely acceptable if that is someone's rationale. I really feel they are two completely separate issues. Also, basically what you're saying then is that if you are pro-choice, you have to be pro-death penalty? Or at least not anti-death penalty? I'm saying if that you're pro-life and pro-death penalty then that's ok, but when someone asks why it doesn't apply to all human life (usually after being lectured about it) then you (not YOU, Sonix) shouldn't give a half-assed answer or look at the other person like they're stupid because they don't get it. Many times I've heard the "well, they're criminals" answer given without much depth. It ends up being circular logic. They're criminals, and they deserve to die, because they're criminals. Well, ok, I agree with that, but you just went on this lengthy diatribe about how President Obama has no respect for human life because he allowed stem cell research? Do you have respect for all human life, or do you not? If not, well then, just say so. But nobody does and it goes back to more lecturing.
-
I feel like people are free to believe and support whatever they want - but - if you're going to be inconsistent and support the death penalty, fine, but don't try to pretend it's not inconsistent and then talk down to people who make note of it. It's like, please spare me the morality lectures and talk about respect for human life etc., and then give me the "innocent life to criminal life" answer.

QUOTE (everafan @ Jun 1, 2009 -> 11:25 AM) Anyone else want to eat crow and admit Ozzie was right about not putting too much pressure on Getz and Fields? Originally he had no intention of batting them 1 and 2, but acquiesced. They were hot to start but then regressed. They moved down in the lineup and now they are coming along. Fields should never have been batting 2nd, that's about the worst possible spot for him to bat save for leadoff. Hell, he may as well have put Anderson there, that would be just as bad. Getz moving down had nothing to do with him folding under pressure, it was all about the other pitchers making adjustments and he wasn't producing, plus, Pods came back. -

QUOTE (Dick Allen @ Jun 1, 2009 -> 09:39 AM) Ryne Sandburg was a 3B when he came up. So was Cal Ripken. Not to say Beckham is going to be a HOFer (hopefully) but if he plays 3B a couple of months in 2008, it won't make him a 3B for the rest of his career. Chances are Fields and/or Getz trade value isn't going to be too affected by a couple of months of performance unless its absolutly dominating, and if that happened the Sox would probably want to keep them. I think Beckham is just wasting time in AAA. If Fields builds on his recent success and starts hitting for power, he'll be at third. If he falters, Beckham's coming. Good points. -
QUOTE (joesaiditstrue @ Jun 1, 2009 -> 02:07 AM) Give Thome some days off to rest his feet, perhaps put Dye at DH and let Brian play RF, Pods CF, CQ LF (I say Pods over Brian in CF, because as we've seen Carlos hasn't played RF since he was with the Dbacks, and I don't think they're going to mess around with that right now, and I don't think Pods has played RF for us, ever) You could also DH Carlos and have an OF of Pods/BA/Dye, both options give Jim some rest Pathetically and hilariously enough, yes he has (earlier this year) but given the choice, yeah, you put BA in RF since he has the arm to play it and he's got enough range and natural ability to play wherever he wants.

QUOTE (fathom @ May 31, 2009 -> 10:12 PM) Sorry greg, that was horrible base running by Anderson. With one out, you never, ever plan on tagging unless you're on 3rd base. It wasn't really tagging though, we're not talking about a sac fly. It was apparent pretty early that the ball wasn't going to be caught, so BA should've been waved around and would've scored easily considering the thing went all the way to the warning track. Holding him up is what caused the out (although in fairness to Cox, I'm not sure where exactly Anderson and AJ were standing when the ball went over Guillen's head). -

QUOTE (BearSox @ May 31, 2009 -> 09:24 PM) Oh, because I've been so wrong many times before. Please list all times I've been wrong. Clayton Richard... already admitted that one. Original Nick Swisher trade... oh wait, nailed that one. Ryan Sweeney... hasn't really panned out either way, but anyone can make a legit argument between him, Anderson, Swisher, and Young and who'd be the better option. Josh Fields... jury's still out. Edwin Jackson and Andy Sonnastine... dead on again. Please, add to the list of all my wacky and crazy predictions. You're going to say you don't make outlandish statements fairly regularly?

QUOTE (elrockinMT @ May 31, 2009 -> 09:21 PM) What happened? You mean with the baserunning? Getz hit a line drive to the warning track with the bases loaded, AJ scores, Anderson was being held at 3rd with Fields between 2nd and 3rd. Anderson decides to ignore the sign, goes, and beats the throw home, meanwhile Getz is advancing to 2nd. Fields ends up being stuck because he was waiting for Anderson to tag and doesn't have time to go to 3rd, but he can't go back to 2nd because Getz already advanced so he ends up getting thrown out. -
QUOTE (BearSox @ May 31, 2009 -> 07:45 PM) The thing is, Greinke was never mediocre. He was an elite prospect who got sidetracked due to his mental problems. Greinke was always considered a potential stud and he has some of the best stuff of any pitcher in baseball. Lee is a solid pitcher with mediocre stuff. He had a fantastic year last year, but have you ever heard of career years? If Lee comes anywhere close to his 2008 season (and I'm not talking W-L wise), I'll eat crow. But I'd be surprised if he finishes the season with an ERA under 3.5. Also, no one in their right mind would take Lee over Greinke. lol, if you did this for every outlandish statement you've made you'd never have to buy food again in your life.

QUOTE (greg775 @ May 31, 2009 -> 07:44 PM) Yeah there was a radio promo on "Sweep the Sox." I think they really thought they'd get well on the Sox. They didn't. Praise for Pods. He's proving a lot of people wrong. I admit I didn't want him back. Maybe he's destined to only play decent baseball for the Sox, nobody else. His contributions today were huge obviously. He set the tone nicely. Gotta keep it going obviously, but this was a nice win. I admit I didn't want Pods back and praise him today. Are any of you who were down on the Pods acquisition changing your tune? I was worried that he'd get hurt again, which is why I was glad to see him go in the first place. I'm still worried that if he plays too much he'll pull a hamstring... again. I never really had a problem with him playing, and he is better than both Wise and Owens IMO (especially Owens, whether he is better than Wise is debatable and it's kind of a toss-up to me).

QUOTE (jimmiething @ May 31, 2009 -> 06:21 PM) Ok first time posting but anyways I think it would be very very bad for the sox to have to call up Beckham to play third base this season. There is now way The Cuban Pimp is ready for the big leagues and in my mind I don't think there is any doubt that Beckham could hold his own right now in the big leagues. That being said, the reason Beckham is so highly reguarded as a prospect is he is such a good hitter for a middle infielder. Now if he plays a good 3rd base and hits how people project him to hit he will be a nice player but by no means a superstar. Going along with this,if Josh loses the job to Beckham, Fields becomes virtually useless to us in trades in that his trade value really has never been as low as it is now. So best case scenario for me, Gordon continues to succeed in the minor leagues and Josh keeps hitting the ball like he has over these past few days. Next year we can hopefully trade Getz of Fields for a good major league ready pitcher or outfield and have Beckham step in and be the savior all of the southside expects him to be. Welcome to Soxtalk! -
I expected a breakout year from Adam Jones but I was thinking more along the lines of about a .290 average, 3-4 homers, and about a .850 OPS going into the summer. I didn't notice that he had 11 HRs. I didn't even know he has that much power potential.
