QUOTE (southsideirish71 @ Jun 3, 2009 -> 12:02 PM) The platoon makes no sense. The numbers don't even support it. Anderson against righties .313BA/.370OBP/.703OPS Anderson against lefties .154BA/.313OPB/.505 OPS And we are going to get him more ABs against lefties, why. Just like last year. It burns my ass to no end.

QUOTE (scenario @ Jun 3, 2009 -> 11:44 AM) Brian, of course, could make this whole thing easier by PLAYING BETTER. Amazing how people want to pick any one thing he does well and wave it like a flag as to why Brian deserves to be a regular and questioning why Ozzie 'doesn't get it'. What part of having a sub .700 OPS are you not paying attention to??? Get a grip. When Brian plays well enough to be a real MLB regular, he'll get the job. Don't blame management for his inability to get the job done. Uh he did - this is nonsense anyway, the whole thing with him has always been that if he doesn't play, he doesn't get better, plus there are vultures hovering over him after every bad game. He HAS been looking MUCH better at the plate than he has in the past and apparently this is still an issue. Last week his OPS was .750. He hasn't been hitting for power because he's been trying to reconcile his poor mechanics, which isn't something that happens overnight, this is why his OPS is under .700 (right now - it's been floating over and under, so talk about cherry-picking). We know he has power, his other issues were more glaring... if he's platooned, look for him to regress some more. You know though, I'd take a .696 OPS over a .372 OPS. Just saying.

I don't even see why Jordan was being brought up in the first place or why anybody's bringing LeBron's character in this so soon. Had the Cavs won and Dwight Howard been the one to leave, not shake hands, not talk to teammates, and ignore the media, he would've been called out too although he isn't as much of a star with as many crowds of people hanging off his nuts as LeBron is. People have done it before, and been called out for it.

QUOTE (CanOfCorn @ Jun 3, 2009 -> 11:29 AM) I'm talking about the game. Baseball. Not micro-analyzing one decision. So what if Wise starts over BA. I mean, let's just enjoy being there. Of course it's more fun when they are winning...but we are talking like a bunch of whiny babies over one position. The pitching is better...the hitting overall is better, let's focus on that instead of one guy. (I'm starting to sound like Billy Crystal in Running Scared..."One guy...you are going to give all that coke to...one...guy...?") I try, but it's just not fun watching DeWayne Wise play. I really don't mind him coming in as a pinch runner, or pinch hitting for Anderson against a right-handed reliever. Beyond that, seeing him get half the playing time is so frustrating. I was tenuous about it when the season started because Anderson hadn't proven he was a better hitter than Wise (mainly, because last year he was sitting vs. RHP when he shouldn't have been, hitting a lot of homers vs. lefties but not doing much else). But Anderson's clearly improved and Wise will never be more than he is. Every time I see Wise start when he shouldn't I'm reminded that Ozzie doesn't see it. It's not like when a player gets traded and he's gone, and I have to get over it. It's something that's constantly going on and I don't have to like it.

QUOTE (CanOfCorn @ Jun 3, 2009 -> 11:23 AM) Really...? You really just went there...? Ok. Went where? I'm saying the same thing over and over.

Dick Cheney says he isn't opposed to gay marriage (and that it's up to the states), and Gingrich says he shouldn't have said Sotomayor is a racist. Neither of which I expected.

QUOTE (CanOfCorn @ Jun 3, 2009 -> 11:12 AM) And one more thing, this isn't brain surgery. This is baseball. Some people want to continue getting worked up over a position battle. Sit back, relax, strap it down, open a cold one and enjoy the summer (if it ever gets here). Correct, it's not brain surgery, it's really that obvious that the team isn't benefited by Wise platooning with Anderson.

QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Jun 3, 2009 -> 10:40 AM) Has LeBron punched a teammate yet? Jordan managed to do that at least once that I can remember as well. /shrug Jordan was kind of an asshole, that's already been stated in this thread. Besides, 1) Kerr swung at Jordan first and 2) Jordan didn't get a free pass for that anyway, and he immediately apologized to Kerr for it. Nice obfuscation shrugging off the direct (and horribly inaccurate) comparison shaking hands after losing though, what's this have to do with LeBron again and the fact that he was in the wrong?

Plus, what's wrong with gambling, if he's not betting on the NBA? Who cares? It's legal.
-
QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Jun 3, 2009 -> 10:23 AM) Well to be fair, Jordan is/was a serial adulter and a big time gambler. Unless LeBron has some things that no one is talking about, I would rate not shaking hands as below both of those. We're talking about on the court and sportsmanship though. Personally I don't care about the personal lives of athletes as long as they're not breaking laws, I don't want to hear about it. And I would conservatively bet that at least 50% of married NBA players cheat on their wives.

QUOTE (NorthSideSox72 @ Jun 3, 2009 -> 10:20 AM) We now face two straight LH starters, so I'm sure we'll get lots of BA in those two games. The test will be after that, when he's definitely healthy, but we're not facing LH all the time. He shouldn't be platooned though. It just doesn't help him, or the team.

QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Jun 3, 2009 -> 10:10 AM) Brian Anderson has the flu. I am guessing it was the same bug that supposedly Jenks had for a couple of weeks. I won't feel comfortable knowing that Wise won't start over Anderson until I see it happen. It makes me feel better that Pods is here to take away Ozzie's impulse to put a "fast" player in, but it's still something that has yet to happen.
-
It will be said in this thread that Anderson was recovering from the flu last night, but that ignores the fact that this is a well-established pattern. There is merit to the argument that Pods should be out there over Brian even though Brian's hit RHP very well this year, but Wise is clearly the 5th outfielder and should not be starting over either one.

QUOTE (T R U @ Jun 2, 2009 -> 11:56 PM) I don't play Halo but Left 4 Dead 2 is enough for me, that game is awesome and I think the second one should be even better. I know it's not on the list, but I'm psyched for Mass Effect 2.

QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Jun 3, 2009 -> 09:41 AM) Laugh if you like, but the guy starts stammering like Bush when the prompter is gone. Its why he doesn't go anywhere with out it. I'm not one who bristles when people make fun of him (hell, I do it too) but you act like he's mentally retarded. Haven't you ever seen him do a press conference or take questions? He sounds the same as anyone else. He just says "uuhhhh" and "aaaand" a lot. It's not like he is at a complete loss for words or starts blathering out incoherent sentence fragments like a certain governor who shall remain nameless.

QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Jun 3, 2009 -> 09:34 AM) The whole teleprompter thing wouldn't have gotten nearly as much traction if it wasn't for his whole speaking ability aura. It has been turned into such an important part of what supposedly got him elected President, and it turns out that it is all predicated on a machine feeding it all to him. He has no ability to speak on his own, only to regurgitate what he is told. At that point, just send the machine out there, and I will just judge it instead. I know it won't change anything to those who like him, and it won't change anything to those who don't, just like anything else in politics. fixed

QUOTE (ChiSox_Sonix @ Jun 3, 2009 -> 09:17 AM) I guess because nothing jumped out at me is all. Crackdown 2 and Left 4 Dead 2 immediately did. I remember falling for the Halo 3 hype like a dumbass, and going out to get the game b/c of the Halo 3 demo. Then I realized the game was actually mad fun, Halo 3 came out a few months later, and I found out Crackdown was actually > Halo 3.

QUOTE (Greg Hibbard @ Jun 2, 2009 -> 03:19 PM) I think he's got to get some credit for keeping this team's head together when they were 7 under QUOTE (TheBigHurt @ Jun 2, 2009 -> 05:42 PM) Yeah, but as I said, that has more to do with his personality, not his in-game managing skills (or major lack of). Yeah I'm with this, that kind of thing is a different category of managing. There is no excuse whatsoever for doing things like calling a hit and run with Lillibridge and his .180 batting average or making Alexei bunt for no reason in the first inning while he's hot. He does this stuff routinely.

QUOTE (lostfan @ Feb 16, 2009 -> 12:38 PM) Ok, normally I don't do this, but what the hell. - Much to Soxtalk's chagrin, Jerry Owens starts the season in CF for the Sox, and his play is acceptable. - Paul Konerko starts off slow as usual but bounces back big. - John Danks pitches the first 2/3ish of the season looking like a Cy Young contender but has a dead-arm period. - Gavin Floyd will still walk more batters than we're comfortable with but will be otherwise just fine. - Mark Buehrle will struggle because the defense is piss-poor. - Bobby Jenks will have another effective, statistically good season. Posters will continue to b**** about his non-existent decline in performance. To hell with it, why not. 1 - Way off on Owens but I didn't have any way of knowing back in February that Owens would underperform so badly and regress so far. I said this because we didn't have anything even remotely resembling a leadoff hitter besides him, I wasn't ready to count Lillibridge, and a retarded chimp could've told you Wise was going to fail in the leadoff spot. I was trying to be generous giving him the benefit of the doubt from the progress he made in '07. Well, that's all gone. 2 - Paulie came storming out of the gates. I was wrong about a slow start, but this prediction wasn't really wrong. Paulie's back. 3 - TBD. He's had 3 really bad outings that ballooned his ERA followed by 3 really good ones. Too early to tell. He has about a 2:1 K:BB ratio though and when he's not coughing up 6 runs per start, he looks fine with his command. 4 - Ready to say I whiffed on this because Buehrle has been lights out. The D hasn't been as bad as I thought. Fields has been atrocious and Betemit even worse, but Alexei's all right, Getz is good (and Nix is AWESOME when he plays), Paulie's been great defensively. Outfield's been ok, although Dye is still brutal out there. Wise isn't terrible but he tries his best to make himself look good with unnecessary jumps and dives. 5 - Bobby is Bobby, and yes, the usual posters are b****ing, about what I don't know.

QUOTE (kjshoe04 @ Jun 1, 2009 -> 03:13 AM) Oh and when it comes to class, Jordan is not the person to bring up. He was more classless than Lebron. He just didn't lose. By the way, I think everyone recognizes this statement as blatantly inaccurate, but you know, Jordan didn't come in and immediately start winning championships. http://sports.yahoo.com/nba/news;_ylt=Akdu...o&type=lgns

QUOTE (chisox2334 @ Jun 3, 2009 -> 05:46 AM) As for assumptions Oswalt has reservations about pitching on the South Side, Garber said his client believes U.S. Cellular Field "is a pitcher's park, compared to Minute Maid Park. "Roy is not afraid of the park or the American League," Garber said. Only if there was like... zero gravity at Minute Maid Park.

Article on the decline of baseball card collecting

QUOTE (Whitewashed in '05 @ Jun 2, 2009 -> 11:08 PM) I had a few decent ones. Can't remember without looking, but I know I got a Ventura rookie card who was my favorite as a kid. I remember getting a bunch of BJ Surhoffs anytime I bought a pack of cards and getting pissed. Each pack would have like 1, maybe 2 players that were really good, then the rest was probably players you heard of if you watched baseball everyday, but there was a lot of random filler too... lol Then looking back on the stats, this was before OPS and such, I can't remember what stats were there. I think it was BA/OBP/SLG. -
QUOTE (MexSoxFan#1 @ Jun 2, 2009 -> 11:05 PM) Of course they knew MJ,basketball is probably after soccer the second most popular sport, golf ain't even in the radar, that's my point,Tiger is a huge deal in America and some parts of Europe but I bet those 10 year old kids don't know who the hell Woods is.They probably know Kobe though... They probably don't know Woods (btw these kids I'm talking about, they're probably in high school now, if they're still in school). And they probably do know Kobe cuz they know all about hip-hop music, lol.
