QUOTE (kapkomet @ Jun 4, 2009 -> 04:04 PM) lf, it's not what he said in the speech today, it was what he said in a presser yesterday. I will have to go see if I can find the link, since I just cleared my cookies and cache. Grrr. Ok I might have to take back what I said. There's 2 fathers he could be talking about though, I think his biological father (left when he was 2, wasn't in his life) was the Muslim one, and the one his mother married was the atheist.

Chicago Slayer vs. Oakland Athletic 6/4 Thread-1:05pm-CSN
lostfan replied to Brian's topic in 2009 Season in Review
QUOTE (BigSqwert @ Jun 4, 2009 -> 03:02 PM) Strong? Yes. Accurate? Occasionally. I remember a game early in '07 where he badly airmailed a throw from left, and when the camera went back onto him you could see him say "f***" clear as day. -
A very rough* summary of the English-language Arab editorials I've read today about Obama's speech: -Overall, very positive reception. They like what they hear and they want to believe him. -Still, much cynicism and doubt. They say "we've heard it all before" or "they're just words, nice to hear, but need action" -They liked that he cited Koranic verses and understood their religion -They liked that he was up-front about America's relationship with Israel (i.e., it's not going to change) and liked how he addressed the Palestinians' cause as legitimate, even though he denounced violence (he actually used the words "resistance" and "occupation" IIRC). They still want to see progress even though Netanyahu makes it difficult. *a bunch of stuff I've read lumped together, not in any way intended to look like a cohesive, unified view.

QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Jun 4, 2009 -> 02:08 PM) It's interesting how much of the actual debate in that wikipedia post you ignored. What debate... what do you mean? Apostasy is punishable by death in Islam. Whether it's universally accepted by Muslims I guess is debatable but that's not the point, it's prevalent enough that 2K5 is right that it's definitely a cultural taboo.
-
QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Jun 4, 2009 -> 01:51 PM) Bush didn't want the word "Crusade" to be the focus of the speech over there either... If you say the wrong thing, it will be the focus. Right, and it would've been dumb of Obama to talk about his father's apostasy in a Muslim country. I don't know why that talking point's gotten traction (well, actually I do, but...), and kap isn't the first one I saw say it, he just happened to be the one who said it on here.
-
QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Jun 4, 2009 -> 01:45 PM) It doesn't matter really. Culturally that would be the most important part to a religion that tells us anyone who abandons Islam is supposed to die. If he is trying to connect with them through someone who deserted them, that would be the American equivalent of saying "Hey my great-great-great Grandfather used to own yours." Its a cultural taboo. I don't dispute that apostasy = treason to them, I'm just saying... he didn't want that to be a focus of his speech. He's not going to come out and say "well my father used to be Muslim but he actually was an atheist" because that would be dumb as hell, like you said.
-
QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Jun 4, 2009 -> 01:46 PM) I'm not even in the first argument. I am just pointing out that if he is really trying to connect to Islam through someone who deserted the faith, that is not very smart at all. I wasn't trying to call you out, my bad, I just didn't like how far away I was getting from my original point.
-
You guys are killing me and this has turned into bulls*** quickly. I'm not going to re-post what I already said for anyone who couldn't be bothered to read it, but the point is that yes, he glossed over (actually omitted) the fact that his father was an atheist to make a larger point that he understood Islam. Nowhere in there did he say his father was a Muslim. If you're that hung up on that one sentence of a 16-page speech to the point where you disagree w/me that he was actually trying to say that, then I don't know what to tell you.
-
QUOTE (ChiSox_Sonix @ Jun 4, 2009 -> 01:36 PM) For arguments sake, if it wasn't meant to insinuate anything about his father being Muslim, then what the f*** was the point in saying it? Post #3398
-
QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Jun 4, 2009 -> 01:34 PM) If that is actually what he meant, that is really bad. That is not going to help mend relations with Islam, because the worst possible thing you can do is desert the religion. That is a cause for death to his father. ??? That was like the absolute least relevant part (that his father was an atheist). That's why he didn't even bring it up and talked about his father's family instead.
-
QUOTE (ChiSox_Sonix @ Jun 4, 2009 -> 01:13 PM) WOWWWWW Because that is TOTALLY the same thing!!!! Where was that straw man picture StrangeSox posted the other week? That's not a strawman, it's a direct analogy.
-
QUOTE (ChiSox_Sonix @ Jun 4, 2009 -> 01:11 PM) Seriously? How is the phrase "my father came from a Kenyan family that includes generations of Muslims" not supposed to insinuate that his father was Muslim? And if it wasn't what was the point of that statement? To say that his relatives on the his father's side have been Muslim and in the past and may or may not still be but they definitely were in the past? GMAB. That totally was meant to point to his father's religious background. I don't give two s***s what religion he or his family is, but I can't see how one can argue that was not what was meant. You make fun of Kap for saying stuff but it seems someone is always grasping at something to try and contradict him, no matter what. In that part of his speech, he was talking about how he was familiar with the religion, how he's been exposed to their culture, and he understands what it means to be a Muslim etc. Yes, he was pointing out his father's religious background. Actually his father's family's religious background. That was the entire point of him bringing it up. Now, his father comes from a Muslim family, that's not really a secret, and then he later became an atheist. Nothing he said in that part of the speech contradicted anything he's previously said or changed his tone. It's quite obvious that some random talking head/blogger read that snippet and drew their own arbitrary conclusion to say "omg Obama is lying again lol."
-
QUOTE (kapkomet @ Jun 3, 2009 -> 12:28 PM) Soooo... "America is one of the largest muslim countries in the world"... and during the campaign, Obama's dad was "agnostic or atheist" but now he's muslim, along with Obama's grandmother? Funny how the story changes when he goes over there to give a major speech to the Muslim world. And, for the record, religion doesn't matter to me, but it's funny how the story's changing now to benefit his circumstances. How many apologies for the United States are we going to have in the speech tommorow? Do people on the internet really go far out of their way to make s*** up? How's that say "my father is Muslim?"
-
QUOTE (NorthSideSox72 @ Jun 4, 2009 -> 12:23 PM) That would make us UNDERperform. Huh? Wait I f***ed up. What I'm trying to say is that the inconsistency of the offense throws off our run differential. That we put up a lot of double digit games but then get shut out a lot, or held to 1 or 2 runs even when the pitching matchup favors us.
-
I would venture to guess the reason we outperform our Pythagorean is because we tend to win games 11-4 and lose games 2-1. And if that's the case, this is not something that should be attributed to Ozzie as a reason he's a "good" (or "bad," as the case may be) manager. It's just the way the team is. Solid pitching, inconsistent offense.
-
If I ever met DeWayne Wise in person I would totally act like I didn't even know Soxtalk existed - lol
-
Ozzie is like your neighbor's loud ass barking dog, you hear it and you're know it's there but it's making noise so often you're hardly aware of its presence sometimes.

QUOTE (whitesoxbrian @ Jun 4, 2009 -> 11:01 AM) I seriously can't wait. This kid reminds me a lot of Jeter. Bash me all you want, but he's a good contact hitter with some pop, and he gets tons of grief for his defense but Jeter's arm isn't overly strong either. Jeter is one of the best pure hitters in the game and is a first-ballot HOFer based on that alone - what burns my ass so much is that he is constantly hyped up as a great defensive SS.

I stand by the statements I made in this thread. So far I see people are excited, but there is no separation between excitement and high expectations. Be patient with him, give him time.

Derrick Rose's High School Grades Were Altered
lostfan replied to maggsmaggs's topic in Alex’s Olde Tyme Sports Pub
QUOTE (maggsmaggs @ Jun 4, 2009 -> 07:47 AM) If it were true that Rose did not cheat and he did, in fact, take the SAT, then he would have come out and said so. His silence, to me, means that he is guilty. Why else would he be quiet? If he did take, he would be out championing that he took the test and so on. Rose denied it already. -
QUOTE (kapkomet @ Jun 3, 2009 -> 11:43 PM) Ok dude, now you're talking out your ass. Let 'er rip. Irony ftw
-
Holy s***, 20 pages to read. I didn't want to see him called up so soon but this is exciting.

QUOTE (Dick Allen @ Jun 4, 2009 -> 08:10 AM) I think he was either hurt or sick. When he was standing on second he hunched over for a while. He was dizzy or lightheaded, something like that.
-
QUOTE (Jerksticks @ Jun 3, 2009 -> 10:28 PM) Pods looked like a torpedo flying up the line there. He's hitting every ball hard too. What's the deal with Wise being out of options? Does this force us to keep him, and send BA down? I wouldn't mind someone else pickin up Wise. BA is our boy now, I hope he is on this team for years to come. Last year Wise got DFA'd, not claimed, and then accepted assignment to Charlotte.

QUOTE (fathom @ Jun 3, 2009 -> 09:43 PM) Some pretty stupid quotes in that one, including saying Wise faced Greinke and we still won. Yeah, that's pretty asinine.
