2021 NFL Season Thread
He absolutely wasn't put in a position to succeed, and with proper instruction and having someone listen to his feedback I think he would've been competent. Also, I'm a senior leader in my day job and I can't believe some of the things I read in that Athletic article. I would NEVER treat people the way Nagy did, especially the ones who actually give a shit and WANT to learn.

I don't think Mitch was ever going to be worth the pick and the resources spent to get the pick. I think he could be an average NFL QB at best because he just can't throw the deep ball. He CERTAINLY would've been better than his actual Bears tenure, though. Nagy's offense never worked and he should've been let go after last season.

Soxtalk Member Age Range
My dad was at game 1 - definitely the better game to be at, and one of his fondest memories.

I cannot figure out why the Ravens went for 2 there. Cost them the game.

That doesn't seem like it's a real thing. That's ridiculous.

The Second Base Options (as it stands)
For whatever reason Madrigal and Heuer were firmly in their "must trade" pool, and that's fine if their talent evaluators said "sell high please" or they were both low character guys. Using them for Kimbrel was a bad decision at the time, looks even worse by his performance, and is only redeemable if they pull off a coup of a trade.

I really hope Madrigal ends up mediocre/really is an irredeemable ass, otherwise trading him to downgrade 2B for much more money seems really stupid.

Probably just blasting nonsense out there in the hopes that it sticks, but man would that be nice.

Or he loves playing here (well-documented) and wants to be on a winning team.

That's fair, and he only has 600 or so innings at 2B, but I don't know if I've seen enough from him stats-wise or eye test-wise to say he'd be at least league average. He'll also be 31 when the season starts so he likely will start to decline, and there's less room for that to be acceptable than there is with Segura.

Leury is worse at 2B. -2.9 UZR/150.

2.2 bWAR vs 3.7 for Segura. Segura is also a better hitter vs. righties and a MUCH better hitter vs. lefties. Leury also struggles vs. ground ball pitchers - Segura is 100 OPS points higher. Leury also grades out as below average at 2B from what I've seen - Segura is a solid defensive 2B. I don't think Segura is an amazing upgrade, but he's good, consistent, and he competently fills a hole that the Sox have left open. I don't think its a guarantee that Leury hits 2 WAR again, either.

Whether we like it or not, the Sox did not like Madrigal. That's over now - filling a weakness with a strength via trade is a good move.

Segura had an .882 OPS (.313/.379/.503) vs lefties last year, and .738 versus righties (.279/.333/.405). That's not amazing vs. righties, but it's competent, especially for a 9 hole hitter. Including his solid defense this seems like a good move for 2022, with flexibility to look at different options in 2023. No idea if it gets done but I would really like Segura and I don't understand the objections.

Yes, absolutely. Segura is a solid option at second base hitting 9th, Conforto is a left handed bat who can finally fill our gigantic hole in RF, and a lottery ticket SP is a good backup for Kopech/Keuchel.

Corey Seager to the Rangers: 10Y, 325M
That deal worked out fine for the Rangers - he was well worth his contract, and they were able to trade him when they couldn't build around him. Investing long-term in young, really good position player free agents is at worst a neutral outcome.

Robbie Ray to the Mariners, 5 years $115 million
What does the Rangers minor league system look like? These are two super impactful signings but that team was so bad last year they're still gonna need a lot of help over the next 3 years and by then Semien is likely declining.

Robbie Ray to the Mariners, 5 years $115 million
Seattle was at $57 million, Texas was at $66 million, Toronto was at $80 million. They had way more room than the Sox did for these contracts - no one else in the top half of MLB salaries besides the Mets, Angels (Angels spend tons of money all the time and it looks like the Mets are joining them) and White Sox have signed anyone of note this offseason.

2022 Offseason Plan Thread
2022 is Abreu's last year. Vaughn takes over at 1B then, with Sheets the backup 1B/LF/RF against righties (or the Sox cash in on a high note and trade him now). If you trade Vaughn now you have a big hole at 1B and Sheets frankly doesn't have near the potential Vaughn has. Also, signing a likely worse free agent 1B to a bigger deal than Vaughn's pre-arb numbers doesn't make sense. The Sox would be stupid to trade Vaughn. Use Kimbrel, Burger, Sheets as your main upper-level trade pieces and see what you can do. Supplement the rest of the team with free agents.

With Posey gone and a number of older players who likely had their last great year last year (Crawford, Belt, Longoria) I can't see how this team wins even 90 again. I think they'll be .500 - would love to be wrong, though, and have them beat up on the Dodgers and Padres again.

No way on Gurriel for Vaughn, but maybe Kimbrel + Burger?
