NY Daily News: Sox make Abreu 1-Year Offer
I don't think Figgins is in the picture at all. If you have Quentin and Abreu in the corners, you can't have Figgins in CF. Owens is already suspect out there. Figgins is not a good CF. Also Figgins won't be going to 3B unless they trade Fields, and I think they really like Fields and want him to play a full season in Chicago before giving up on him. If Dye gets traded, it'll be for pitching. I could see that Bailey trade happening if Abreu signs with the Sox.

Tigers sign Lyon
Lyon's signing made me think about Linebrink. He got 4 years, 19 mill last year. He got his contract at the right time. No way he'd get that now.

Sox sign an ex-Angels farmhand
Wrong forum, in my opinion.

Gordon Beckham Ranked #36 Prospect
QUOTE (Princess Dye @ Jan 23, 2009 -> 12:38 PM) Every time i hear about Poreda he sounds like a potential reliever. Additionally, is the fear with Flowers that his bat wont be good enough to warrant putting up with weak D behind the plate? Is he projected as AJP type hitting? less? I know little about him. Flowers was at A and AA last year. Kenny Williams said he could hit in the big leagues now, so it's his defense that needs work. Maybe if he has a good year at Birmingham, he'll be up in September.

Jeff Kent To Retire
I kind of think of Jeff Kent as the Gary Carter of 2B. You watched his whole career. He was pretty good. He was very good for his position. But you never really thought Hall of Fame when you watch him. Kent is very borderline, but he'll probably get in.

Freddy Garcia speculation (Closed - Garcia Signs W/Mets)
Sweaty signed with the Mets.

Sox in WBC; Danks Declines
Let's call the WBC what it is...it's an international marketing tool. It's not for the US or most Americans. If there are some Americans that are into it, go for it. That's your prerogative. But don't try to throw it down people's throats that they're bad Americans if they don't give a s*** about this thing.

We need a back up catcher
Flowers will be at AA this season.

Jeff Kent To Retire
It's interesting that even if Kent didn't take steroids, they may help him get in the Hall. All of his best RBI seasons were in San Francisco, batting behind Barry Bonds. It's an unfortunate trickle down in this era, and why it will be the toughest group of players to evaluate for Hall of Fame consideration.

Sox in WBC; Danks Declines
I ignored the WBC in 2006, and will do the same this year.

Official: White Sox sign Colon
Heard KW say Colon will get to Glendale on February 2 to continue his rehab. That's a good sign that he wants to get to camp a couple weeks early.

Players that passed on a certain thing and then lost
Jody Reed. Reed turned down a 3 year, $8 million contract with the Dodgers, only to sign with Milwaukee for $300,000 the following year.

Official: White Sox sign Colon
QUOTE (103 mph screwball @ Jan 14, 2009 -> 08:30 PM) You may be right and that may have been the plan. But you can never have too much pitching and the Sox might be able to pick up someone like Garland, Pedro, or Garcia for what might be a depressed market price. If KW can get a low risk, high reward, formally successful starting pitcher, he may take that opportunity. Marquez can prove himself in the pen like McCarthy/Floyd and step up if one of the vets gets injured. I don't see how Marquez is any higher on the depth chart than Broadway or Egbert. He hasn't even proven himself at the AAA level, so I think it's a little premature to put him on the staff. I'm putting Poreda in the pen at this point, but only because he's a lefty. I think ultimately he'll be starting at AAA to start the season, as will Marquez.

Official: White Sox sign Colon
The way I heard it, I wouldn't use the word "probably". They're looking at him as a serious possibility, but I wouldn't say it's probable at this point.

2005 White Sox World Series Highlights
QUOTE (ROC Sox Fan @ Jan 13, 2009 -> 11:38 AM) I've got the games DVD set, is this program what that other DVD is? There's the DVD box set (seven discs), and the one disc World Series DVD. They will be playing this on Friday. They actually played it several times before January 1st.

HAROLD AND THE HALL ... Put em in
Baines is not a HOF player: He led the league in SLG Pct in 1984 and that's the only statistical category he ever led the league. No batting titles. No 30 HR seasons. No Top 5 MVP's (only two top 10's). Statistically he's closest to Tony Perez, who is in the Hall. But Perez had seven 100 RBI seasons and four top 10 MVP's, and played on championship teams. It's arguable that he belongs. Baines is a Hall of Good player, but the Hall of Fame should be reserved for the very best of the best. That said, the Hall of Fame is filled with a lot of players that don't belong, and there are some that are out that DO belong. A lot of it is politics.

Sox close to signing 2 pitchers??
Lyon would be a nice pickup..certainly a lot more reliable than Russell, Jimenez, or Wassermann. The chances of Linebrink and Dotel making it through this season without injuries would be low too. I like the idea of another veteran arm. Anyone confirm these rumors?
-
Sox close to signing 2 pitchers??
I'd think of Pedro much like El Duque in 2005. You know you're not going to get 32 starts from him, but if you get a good 15-20 starts, then he's be more valuable than a bunch of young guys.

SportsCenter Sox preview 5:00pm Mon
ESPN isn't going to say anything Sox fans already don't know. It'll probably mention the crazy Ozzie Guillen, the trades of Swisher and Vazquez, and the possibilty of trading Dye, and that'll be it.
