The same scenerio happend to a few other teams that year if I recall corectly and I also seem to recall reading that it happend alot before then but the agents didn't try to take advantage of it.

All this may be true but I don't see any other viable options unless we can somehow get Pettite. Millwood will be overpaid as well and Maddux's best days are behind him. The only other option is kw completely fleecing another GM and I just don't see that happening.

Because Sox management wants the fans to make the effort and show up first and then have faith in them to provide a quality product after that occurs. I on the other hand think it is the responsibility of management to provide a quality product that people consider to be worth their money so that people will come. JR has to realize that although MLB is a monopoly baseball in Chicago is not. While in the past the Cubs may not have always offered a great on field product they have other intangibles that have made people want to pay for their product. The Sox don't have the luxury of these intangibles (ie historic ballpark, location) so they are going to need an exciting on field product to draw fans and I believe for this to work they have to take the risk and make the first move. However I am sure JR is much happier not taking the risk because I am sure he is still making a profit the way things are.

Ponson is almost a must sign at this point unless kw has a really creative trade coming up. Either way we need to add two quality starters not just one.

PEOPLE OVER THIRTY People over 30 should be dead. According to today's regulators and bureaucrats, those of us who were kids in the 40's, 50's,60's, or even maybe the early 70's probably shouldn't have survived. Our baby cribs were covered with bright colored lead-based paint. There was nothing to stop us from sticking a fork in an electrical outlet. We had no childproof lids on medicine bottles, doors or cabinets, and when we rode our bikes, we had no helmets. (Not to mention the risks we took hitchhiking.) As children, we would ride in cars with no seat belts or air bags. Riding in the back of a pickup truck on a warm day was always a special treat. We drank water from the garden hose and not from a bottle. Horrors! We ate cupcakes, bread and butter, and drank soda pop with sugar in it, but we were never overweight because we were always outside playing. We shared one soft drink with four friends, from one bottle, and no one actually died from this. We would spend hours building go-carts out of scraps and then rode down the hill, only to find out we forgot the brakes. After running into the bushes a few times, we learned to solve the problem. We would leave home in the morning and play all day, as long as we were back when the street lights came on. No one was able to reach us all day. No cell phones. Unthinkable! We did not have Playstations, Nintendo Game Cubes, X-Boxes, no video games at all, no 99 channels on cable, video tape movies, surround sound, personal cell phones, personal computers, or Internet chat rooms. We had friends! We went outside and found them. We played dodge ball, and sometimes, the ball would really hurt. We fell out of trees, got cut and broke bones and teeth, and there were no lawsuits from these accidents. They were accidents. No one was to blame but us. Remember accidents? We had fights and punched each other and got black and blue and learned to get over it, or punch harder next time. We made up games with sticks and tennis balls and ate worms and mud pies, and although we were told it would happen, we did not put out very many eyes, nor did the worms live inside us forever. We rode bikes or walked to a friend's home and knocked on the door, or rang the bell or just walked in and talked to them. Little League had tryouts and not everyone made the team. Those who didn't went out and started their own team. Some students choose not to be as smart as others, so they failed a grade and were held back to repeat the same grade. Horrors! Tests were not adjusted for any reason. Our actions were our own. Consequences were expected. The idea of a parent bailing us out if we broke a law was unheard of. They actually sided with the law. Imagine that! This generation has produced some of the best risk-takers and problem solvers and inventors, ever. The past 50 years have been an explosion of innovation and new ideas. We had freedom, failure, success and responsibility, and we learned how to deal with it all. And you're one of them! Congratulations. Please pass this on to others who have had the luck to grow up as kids, before lawyers and government regulated our lives, for our own good... Kind of makes you want to run through the house with scissors, doesn't it?

The problem is the players would never agree to a set number such as 70 mil. It would have to be a percentage of revenues probably around 55 to 60%. Now if that were to happen the owners would have to open their books to the players union where their, shall we say interesting accounting practices would be picked apart.

I see MLB dying before a salary cap is ever implemented. A cap would be based on a percentage of revenues and the owners have to many ways to hide those revenues and won't show their books and with out that the players will never agree. The other problem with a cap is that while it limits the big spenders it does nothing to bring up the low payrolls so you may be able to limit the Yankees to 100 to 120 mil under a cap but if the tigers and brewers are still only spending 30 mil nothing is solved.
