QUOTE (Steve9347 @ Jan 10, 2014 -> 10:23 PM) After receiving yet another raise today, I now officially make double what I did a year ago. It's weird. After having a budget always and forever, I just find myself with more cash than I could imagine spending. That's with a huge savings account. Adulthood. Awesome. have some kids, they will take care of your money problem in no time!

QUOTE (flavum @ Jan 11, 2014 -> 08:36 AM) I'm more lenient on the PED era when it comes to the Hall of Fame. I would never put in Sosa, Palmeiro, or McGwire (or Sheffield next year), because I think they're all about PEDs. They don't get to milestone number without roids. After the milestones, they weren't the best of the best of their era. But I could vote for Clemens as one of the best pitchers of all time, and Piazza and Ivan Rodriguez as the two best catchers of that time. The game of baseball was on steroids---teams knew, the league knew, the ball was juiced many years---hell, the media knew and didn't do anything for a long time. I'm proud that Frank didn't do anything, but I'm in the camp of--How do you have a Hall of Fame without Barry Bonds and Roger Clemens? Hell, it might be fun to see their speeches and which current HOF players don't show up. This pretty much sums up my feelings to a T.

QUOTE (Reddy @ Jan 10, 2014 -> 04:24 PM) trading easily replaceable pieces for major league ready talent = winning. Even if that major league ready talent doesn't turn out to be very good at major league baseball?

QUOTE (Reddy @ Jan 10, 2014 -> 04:04 PM) As long as he keeps making moves like this, yes he is. Got it. Trading for young prospects >>>>> winning

QUOTE (IlliniKrush @ Jan 10, 2014 -> 01:58 PM) LMAO Northwestern. This on top of the awful bloody uniforms: http://deadspin.com/northwestern-to-wear-s...gain-1498595359 My favorite part is that it says "Tradition". Northwestern Basketball: A tradition like none other, zero NCAA tourney appearances -
QUOTE (pettie4sox @ Jan 10, 2014 -> 03:31 PM) Do people pick against the Patriots because they hate them? Do you really think Luck is going to march into Foxboro and beat TB? In the past four years, Mark Sanchez and Joe Flacco(twice) have won playoff games in Foxboro. I don't see why Luck and the Colts couldn't.

QUOTE (Reddy @ Jan 10, 2014 -> 02:52 PM) You absolutely can. The fact that he's flipping non-important pieces (or at least replaceable pieces) for legitmate MLB-ready prospects already means he's doing a good job regardless of the outcome. As you yourself said, most prospects flame out. Well most pitchers do too, and I'd rather have a GM who's interested and focused on rebuilding WHILE maintaining a competitive team. In one offseason Hahn did just that. If it doesn't work out 100% so what? I want the GM who makes THESE kinds of moves instead of the one who overspends for 10 year contracts to aging superstars. So if these prospects do flame out and the Sox keep losing 90 games every year, is he still doing a good job?

QUOTE (Dick Allen @ Jan 10, 2014 -> 02:07 PM) Morel was once #85. Flowers made it to #60. He put up big numbers for the Sox in AA, and Birmingham was a tough park to put up numbers. Prospects get a lot of love. Some with thrive, most will fall flat on their face. As I mentioned before, if all of Garcia, Eaton and Davidson are as good as we all hope, Hahn will have to be considered a top GM. I remember when Brandon Allen was traded, someone here guaranteed he would be playing in some All Star games. He did fail to mention they would be for the over 30 beer league. One of my favorite stats: Brandon Allen career WAR: -0.2 Tony Pena WAR w/ the Sox: 0.7

QUOTE (Rowand44 @ Jan 10, 2014 -> 01:54 PM) I have no idea who I'm going to pick in that game. This weeks slate of games has been extremely hard for me to pick. Seahawks 23 Saints 20 Colts 35 Patriots 31 Panthers 20 49ers 10 Broncos 48 Chargers 21 (Keep in mind that I went 1-3 in the first round )

QUOTE (BigSqwert @ Jan 10, 2014 -> 01:26 PM) Pretty much everyone on ESPN picking the Niners this weekend, That has to be extra motivation for the Panthers. Sucks for the Niners, Carolina would have been a pushover if not for ESPN.

QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Jan 10, 2014 -> 12:49 PM) There is a ton of chatter about NHL attendance and a big spike coming in the cap. There is no way that this Hawks management group extended Crawford without either pretty solid expectations of cap room opening up, or knowing that Toews/Kane aren't resigning and they have the room to use anyway. (not that I believe the latter for a second). Yeah, everyone seems fairly certain the cap will rise a large amount in the near future. Of course, it's always possible something can happen to reverse that trend, which would be very, very bad for the Hawks and #19/88. We need to root for the Canadian dollar to make a turnaround, it's been struggling.

QUOTE (RockRaines @ Jan 10, 2014 -> 11:54 AM) There has to be some way for them to graduate 97 percent of players..... To be honest though, knock them as we will for many things, their APR and grad rate is top notch, only behind NW in terms of D1 programs. Thats pretty awesome. To be fair, how many schools would suspend their starting QB for the season for an academic issue that wasn't public knowledge? -
QUOTE (bmags @ Jan 10, 2014 -> 11:30 AM) Every receivers numbers would skyrocket after Tebow. TEBOW HAS A BETTER PLAYOFF WINNING PERCENTAGE THAN MANNING SO SHUT YOUR MOUTH!
-
QUOTE (KyYlE23 @ Jan 10, 2014 -> 11:18 AM) I would imagine they would still be pretty good, Demaryus Thomas and Eric Decker are both pretty good WRs. Moreno could be a product of the offense, but I think he is pretty good as well It's no coincidence Decker's stats skyrocketed once Manning took over. If he wants to get paid, he can go catch balls from EJ Manuel or Jake Locker. I'm sure Peyton can find a much cheaper replacement.
-
QUOTE (witesoxfan @ Jan 10, 2014 -> 10:02 AM) Yes, they are saying his defense in CF cost the team that much. He was absolutely, 100%, terrible in CF. That must have been fun with him and Adam Dunn next to each other.
-
QUOTE (KyYlE23 @ Jan 10, 2014 -> 10:33 AM) So I was just kicking this around with a buddy: Say the Broncos go 1 and done in the playoffs again this season, what do you do if you are Elway? You have to imagine some of those offensive pieces are getting close to getting paid, they have a lot of money wrapped up in Manning right now. At what point does he have to accept that this probably wont work? How good are those offensive pieces without Peyton Manning?
-
QUOTE (IlliniKrush @ Jan 10, 2014 -> 09:12 AM) If you're going to keep making this joke, you should at least spell his name correctly before adding the (ies). That's part of the joke

QUOTE (ChiSox_Sonix @ Jan 10, 2014 -> 09:46 AM) He really put up a 3.5 total WAR over a 10 year period? If so, whoa! I'm no expert on WAR, but from what I can understand off FanGraphs, I believe his defense was rated so badly over that time, that it more than negated all of his offensive production. In '07 he had a .869 OPS with 30 HR, 6 SB, yet had a -0.7 WAR? His defensive rating was -35.4 (whatever that exactly means)
-
QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Jan 10, 2014 -> 09:33 AM) Yeah, when he broke down, he really broke down. I think those last 10 years are as good of an argument that he wasn't juicing as anything. I'm not accusing him in anyway as I think he was clean, but couldn't those last 10 years be a good argument that he was juicing? That's why his body became so injury-prone?
