QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Nov 1, 2013 -> 09:34 AM) Coming from a trading background, it would be the larger books that would be more likely to engage in hedging. Would it be legal? When I mentioned risk, I was referring to getting caught, not losing money.

Sox likely to be quiet in free agency after Abreu

QUOTE (TaylorStSox @ Nov 1, 2013 -> 09:32 AM) Coaching won't help. He has awful instincts. You can't fix that. Between all the posts about WAR and Caufield's TL;DR posts, this thread makes me very sleepy. He looked fine in 2012. -
QUOTE (NorthSideSox72 @ Nov 1, 2013 -> 09:19 AM) So here's a sort of obscure question I have on this... I've seen odds on the Sox stated variously at 40-1, 50-1, and 60-1, depending on what casino or source it is pulled from. Seems to me that, if the odds really are different at different locations like that, there is an obvious arbitrage opportunity there for the bookmakers. For every dollar you take in selling them at 40-1, you buy a dollar's worth from another casino (directly or indirectly) at 60-1. For every team that doesn't win, you end up flat. For the team that does, you make as much as 50% margin. Netted out over a lot of diff trades, you make significant positive margin. I wonder if they do that. I would assume there is legislation against such actions. It's probably not worth the risk for a large sports book.

QUOTE (KyYlE23 @ Oct 31, 2013 -> 10:07 PM) http://m.espn.go.com/nfl/story?storyId=9909389 So Aldon Smith might escape any suspension because he voluntarily put himself in rehab. He did miss five games while in rehab, so that is sort of a suspension.

2 Realistic trade options I came up with

What is this infatuation with Andre Ethier? Hey look, a 32-year old platoon player who is still owed $70+ million!!! Where do I sign up? -
First "walk-off" safety since the Bears in 04 vs. the Titans. I miss Ogunleye & Alex Brown on the ends.

Sox hire Todd Steverson as their new hitting coach

Over/Under on the date of the first "Fire Steverson" thread? -
Might as well. Decent veteran reliever, provide some stability around the young guys, maybe you can move him at the deadline. Not too expensive.

QUOTE (RockRaines @ Oct 31, 2013 -> 09:19 AM) Reggie Bush. Sports agents were paying him. USC looking away was what got them in bigger trouble. -
Congratulations to Jake Peavy & Matt Thornton

QUOTE (greg775 @ Oct 31, 2013 -> 02:29 AM) The statniks will get mad at this, but TWTW is important. Aaron Rowand had it, and a lot of people think he was a horrible big league starter and ridicule him. Other important TWTW people in Sox history: Thome, AJP, Buehrle, Fisk off the top of my head. It's funny that you mention AJP in there. He's now been part of two consecutive September collapses. I guess his TWTW is broken. -

QUOTE (witesoxfan @ Oct 31, 2013 -> 07:19 AM) He quite clearly stated he wanted to sign guys to 1 year deals. Forget that he said "something the Cubs did" and look at it like that if you have to. I just like mentioning that the Cubs gave Edwin Jackson $52 million. -
Congratulations to Jake Peavy & Matt Thornton

QUOTE (Frank_Thomas35 @ Oct 31, 2013 -> 01:26 AM) Did anybody see John Farrel's post game comments on feild. He was asked what was so special about these guys and he said something about chemistry and blah blah. But.... At the end he channeled THE Hawk Harrelson, he said the most important thing was....? THE WILL TO WIN, above anything else TWIW. Boom Brian Kenny. Lol. I hope Hawk had it ™ Anyways, congrats JP and Matty Ice. I'm glad Peavy finally got his ring even if it wasn't with us. The will to win and a $150 million payroll. -
QUOTE (chw42 @ Oct 30, 2013 -> 11:55 PM) Peavy did win game 4 in Tampa and wasn't awful in game 3. The other two didn't do jack though. And I thought you were just listing former White Sox on the team. You are right, that was a bit harsh on Jake. The other two, not so much. I had just seen Dempster's name pop up, and he had been in Chicago for so long. (for the other team, I know)
-
QUOTE (chw42 @ Oct 30, 2013 -> 11:25 PM) Why was Ryan Dempster included in that list...? Who are three guys that contributed little to nothing to their team's championship?

Eddy Curry is a NBA champion. Cristobal Huet is a NHL champion -
Jake Peavy. Matt Thornton, and Ryan Dempster are all World Series champions

QUOTE (PolishPrince34 @ Oct 30, 2013 -> 08:34 PM) I said 1 year deals. I believe Jackson was signed for 4 years and $52 million. Check your facts But that's what the Cubs did last offseason. Don't ignore their biggest move in your argument. -
This quickly went from a top 5 thread to a bottom 5 thread. Lock it up mods.

It does suck to see Lackey do so well, not many people worse than him in baseball.

White Sox farm system ranked 24th in new BA ranks

QUOTE (Tex @ Oct 29, 2013 -> 09:30 AM) Has anyone done a study on minor league rankings and post season success? I'd be interested in the years before an appearance. No, but I can tell you how many postseason games the Royals have earned from their top minor league rankings. -

QUOTE (PolishPrince34 @ Oct 30, 2013 -> 07:40 PM) Please people we need to stop bringing up Ellsbury and McCann. There is no way Hahn is going to fork over $150 million contract for Ellsbury or $80-100 million for McCann. We are still rebuilding towards the future and neither of these players fall in that category. What makes Ellsbury 30 years of age a solid player is his elite speed. He might have 2 more years tops of that speed. He will get a minimum of at least 6 years. Hahn has no interest in having huge contract when he's playing during Years 30-38. Same thing with McCann who will turn 30 in the offseason and catchers start to see a huge drop off by Age 32. He's already had shoulder surgery and his best years are already behind him. Again it will take 5-6 years to sign him. I hope and believe Hahn will take a pass on the elite free agents this offseason. I hope we do something very similar to what Epstein/Hoyer did last offseason and that's sign players to 1 year deals and see how the team does. If the team is horrible again which I believe will happen again you then have the fallback plan to trade them off to continue building our farm system for the future. He's already done a great job getting Abreu signed for his prime years and without costing any draft picks/allocation money for the draft. And sign an Edwin Jackson clone. -

QUOTE (LittleHurt05 @ Oct 29, 2013 -> 07:56 AM) I don't know if conceding game 6 to get to game 7 is the best idea. Red Sox were in game 2 with the same pitching matchup until Breslow happened. I think the Sox win game 6, they will get to Wacha this time. Smart guy!
