QUOTE (Eminor3rd @ Oct 21, 2013 -> 01:37 PM) Until the franchise spends millions marketing it. And that still doesn't convince me that it will still help sell tickets unless Abreu helps win ball games.
-
QUOTE (Tex @ Oct 21, 2013 -> 01:08 PM) This was the selling tickets, get the fans excited move that they needed. Even better that it will fill the entire off season. Do people really think this move is gonna help sell tickets? Your average fan will probably have never even heard of Abreu.

QUOTE (iamshack @ Oct 21, 2013 -> 11:46 AM) Well, I am looking at a few things...one, the complete lack of focus this team had this year as opposed to previous years, and two, the fact that the Red Sox, of all teams, thought enough of character and accountability to specifically target certain guys in order to bring back a sense of professionalism to their ballclub this year. I think we could go to school on that a bit, especially given the amount of young players that are going to be coming through our roster in the next several years. The Red Sox didn't turn it around because of professionalism. They were much better because of health and a couple better baseball players. I'd be up for signing AJ because he is still good at baseball, not because of any locker room effect he may have, which is still yet to be proven as positive or negative.

QUOTE (GoSox05 @ Oct 21, 2013 -> 11:38 AM) @AdamSchefter Source texts that Bears LB Lance Briggs will be out 4-6 weeks with shoulder injury. No surgery necessary. Will be back this season. Green Bay Packers - 2013 NFC North champions

QUOTE (witesoxfan @ Oct 21, 2013 -> 11:38 AM) Sounds like he's likelier to end up in Seattle. I'm guessing 1 year, $12 mill. They did just legalize marijuana up there, right? -
QUOTE (iamshack @ Oct 21, 2013 -> 11:31 AM) Yeah, I know you don't care for this one. I'm not saying AJ is the perfect player...he certainly has his detractors. But we are short on guys that seem to understand what is happening on a baseball field at times. AJ, at the catcher position, would help in that regard IMHO. To be fair, his team did collapse down the stretch this year again, although I am sure that will just be blamed on the Alex Rios acquisition. I just don't buy the accountability argument. If AJ were to yell at De Aza after a baserunning blunder, he would stop making stupid mistakes? If Alexei had to answer to AJ, would he have made less errors? Doubtful.
-
QUOTE (iamshack @ Oct 21, 2013 -> 11:19 AM) I honestly think AJ would bring back a sense of focus that we lost last year. I know you quants don't really believe in that stuff so much, but I just think he keeps people on their toes, he knows how to play the game, and he brings some accountability that we are desperately lacking both from our manager and in terms of player leadership. Just look at September 2012, the sense of focus with AJ around was the difference.

11 different MLB teams have appeared in the last 10 World Series, while 13 NFL squads have been in the last 10 Super Bowls. Counting 2013, six franchises will hold the last 10 MLB titles, while seven NFL teams have won the last 10 Super Bowls. The Red Sox & Cardinals laugh at your parity theory.

QUOTE (GoSox05 @ Oct 21, 2013 -> 09:19 AM) Browns could have a really good team. If they had a QB they could be a playoff team. Kind of like the Chiefs the last two years.
-
IMO he did not do a very good job of managing the last few years. They had the most talented team in the division so they did win, but he wasn't much help.

QUOTE (Jake @ Oct 20, 2013 -> 04:55 PM) It's the fans, not the team. It's a well run team (that can spend with the big boys, by the way) Exactly. IMO they are the best run organization in baseball. When they do spend money, they do it well, and they obviously do a great job developing talent. The fanbase's combination of arrogance and ignorance is what kills me.

Brandon Meriweather just needs to be banned from the NFL. He's always just been a head hunter and one of these days he's really gonna hurt someone.

QUOTE (Jake @ Oct 20, 2013 -> 12:17 AM) f*** it, I'd be much happier with 16-32 team playoff. Reduce regular season length if necessary. Every other level and sport can do it. Eliminate the stupid bowls. You're 6-6, you don't deserve a postseason Too many people get rich off the bowls for that to ever happen. -

QUOTE (Rowand44 @ Oct 20, 2013 -> 12:40 AM) Connor Halliday attempted 89 passes... Illinois should have hired Mike Leach. -
I really can't imagine two worse fan bases getting together.

QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Oct 19, 2013 -> 03:28 PM) If the White Sox add a pitcher it should be a guy on a minor league contract with an invite to spring training and possibly an option for the 2015 season. They should not spend more than that on any pitcher unless they've traded a couple guys beforehand. Agreed. They have enough good arms to fill the major league rotation.

QUOTE (scs787 @ Oct 18, 2013 -> 02:47 PM) I certainly wouldn't hate a Dunn/Konerko platoon, it makes a lot of sense. Seems like a waste of a roster spot to me. They both only play 1b, and Abreu should be there most of the time.

QUOTE (Eminor3rd @ Oct 18, 2013 -> 01:56 PM) Again, watch the clip. It's not prancing that made everyone mad. He was yelling what we can assume to be insults at everyone on the diamond, lol. Maybe McCann is a jerk and Gomez was justified. I'm just saying you can't literally yell insults at the opposing team all the way around the bases and then be surprised when the last guy you run past is confronting you at the end. I just think we can't judge McCann on that one incident. EDIT: I also don't think him being in front of the plate meant much of anything. He could have been a step past the plate and had the same effect. I didn't see it as him "blocking" the plate so much as moving into his path so he could end up all up in his face. The Braves do have other instances of this, so that plays in a part in my thinking, and they are about 20 games better in the standings. There are other ways to get back at a player in baseball too. I think I wouldn't be as bothered if he got in his face after he touched home plate, as simple as that sounds. The whole "I won't let you touch home plate becase you called us names" is childish and silly. (And so was Gomez too, but no need to act the same way). McCann knew exactly what he was doing when stepped in the baseline, that was not an accident.
-
QUOTE (Eminor3rd @ Oct 18, 2013 -> 01:45 PM) I actually totally agree with this. I just don't think anyone would have put up with what Gomez was doing, in any similar situation. What McCann did in that specific incident, to me, had nothing to do with baseball. It was just him standing up to a guy who was insulting his friends. What is this, West Side Story? If you don't want Gomez to prance around, then don't let him hit home runs off you. Guarding home plate from a guy who just hit a home run is what Ham Porter would do in the Sandlot. This is MLB, that's ridiculous.

It was a re-signing, but I'd say the 5-year $60 million contract PK14 signed was big money and worth every penny.

QUOTE (ozzfest @ Oct 18, 2013 -> 12:25 PM) The White Sox have never hit the jackpot in free agency. Ever. Why is this any different? If this (Abreu) guy were as good as people say, wouldn't the Yankees, or Giants, or Rangers, or Cubs been all over him and they would have definitely been willing to outbid the White Sox. Paying him twice as much as Puig.....I'm skeptical. Not trying to be a buzzkill, but there needs to be a separate discussion here of just how unproven this guy is. The White Sox have never been the smartest free agent seekers....If something is too good to be true...it is. I guarantee this guy isn't an all star. Jermaine Dye? A.J. Pierzynski?
