  1. Welcome to the world of no run support!
  2. QUOTE (Steve9347 @ Aug 7, 2013 -> 02:25 PM) They want to put something INTERACTIVE up there to put running advertisements to make more money. C'est la vie, I'm sure it'll scroll and flash MADHOUSE ON MADISON, but those signs were the s*** and I love them. Obviously, WELCOME TO THE MADHOUSE will still be up as far as I can tell. Sorry, but I'm pretty sure that WELCOME TO THE MADHOUSE is getting taken down too. Sounds like it at least in this article.
  3. QUOTE (HickoryHuskers @ Aug 7, 2013 -> 02:26 PM) Not saying that taking PEDs in the minors isn't wrong, or isn't as bad as doing it in the majors. Again, this particular article is talking about the HALL OF FAME. If in the unlikely event Quintana goes on to have a HOF worthy career, none of his major league numbers will come from the benefit of his PED use while in the minors, which is not true in the case of the others. If Neyer wanted to make the same point you are making, then he should never have put the words HALL OF FAME in his article. Oh ok, gotcha, I may have quickly skipped over the first two lines of the story and missed the HOF part.
  4. QUOTE (HickoryHuskers @ Aug 7, 2013 -> 02:09 PM) The question in this article was cast in the frame of reference of the Hall of Fame. Quintana's use of PEDs (doesn't even really matter whether or not it was intentional) did not help him one iota in his quest to reach the HOF. He was in the minors when he was caught, got released, and had to essentially start his career over. Players such as McGwire, Sosa, Bonds, Clemens, Ramirez, Palmiero, Petitte, Rodriguez, and Braun used PEDs in the midst of their major league careers, and their use directly increased their ability to compile statistics that led to HOF consideration. It's the difference between Frank Thomas being 18th on the all-time HR list and being 13th. He probably is getting in on the first ballot anyway, but without the stats compiled by the PED users he's getting 95%+ of the vote on the first ballot easy. Using PEDs at the lower level can take away a roster spot from another player and ruin any chance they had at making the majors. Kind of like the Dan Meyer/Antonio Bastardo situation. IMO that's way worse than moving up a few spots on the HR list. Quintana was super young, but his performance could have taken away a paycheck from another kid.
  5. QUOTE (HickoryHuskers @ Aug 7, 2013 -> 12:32 PM) First of all, "sordid drug history" is very sensationalistic and Rob Neyer is a well enough known writer that he shouldn't have to resort to that. Secondly, Quintana never really accomplished anything before his positive test, so it's not anywhere near the same as Braun or ARod, who won MVP awards while on PEDs. Why does it matter how you perform on PEDs? If you win an MVP, it's worse than if you are in the minors?
  6. My issue was with the presentation of the phrase. It was just so cheesy to have this huge bright sign proclaiming the stadium's nickname. Put up a banner next to Stanley Cup banners or a note at the top of the scoreboard. The large signs across the length of the ice were so forced IMO. It should be the Madhouse because people call it that, not because the Hawks put up a huge sign saying so.
  7. QUOTE (iamshack @ Aug 7, 2013 -> 10:14 AM) Hah, I was thinking back more to last year... It all came down to that one low, low slider to Delmon Young
  8. QUOTE (iamshack @ Aug 7, 2013 -> 10:04 AM) He is almost there, but I think he is still learning. He definitely is putting up ace-like production, but I think he is still learning how to win the really big games. It's difficult to win the big games when you are battling for the #1 draft pick.
  9. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Aug 7, 2013 -> 09:08 AM) The sign only went up in the last 10 years or so anyway, right? 2009
  10. Welcome Arrelious Benn & Danario Alexander to the torn ACL club
  11. Personally, I thought the sign was kind of cheesy looking from the day it was installed, so this decision doesn't bother me at all.
  12. QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Aug 6, 2013 -> 08:21 PM) A barely adequate offense (9th in the AL iirc) worked for the 05 Sox too. Touche.
  13. QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Aug 6, 2013 -> 04:30 PM) For a counterpoint, let's look at San Francisco. They have won 2 world series now on the strength of their top front line starting pitching with "barely enough to be adequate" offense. They had to switch one of those starters from Lincecum to Bumgarner, and they've gotten a big contribution from their catcher...but that is a team with 2 world series in what, 4 years, keyed entirely by having a top of the line pair of starters leading their rotation. Let's hypothetically say the Sox added Rondon to Sale at the top of that rotation. Now we're talking about a legitimately dominant possible pitching staff. The kind of pitching staff that on its own wins world series trophies, plural. I try to look at San Francisco as a model for the Sox, but being in the NL West in that huge pitchers park plays such a difference. They could win in the playoffs, but I think they may have a hard time getting there with a "barely adequate" offense in the AL.
  14. I thought this was another thread about Viciedo...
  15. QUOTE (La Marr Hoyt HOF @ Aug 6, 2013 -> 04:17 PM) Nothing says 'Socialism' like $133mm in your pocket ... In an oil town...
  16. QUOTE (bmags @ Aug 6, 2013 -> 04:37 PM) Yeah. I get that Manziel is a spoiled brat, and stuff, but...I really just can't believe how hard the NCAA comes down on this stuff. But they NCAA will happily sell thousands of these jerseys in their own store.
  17. QUOTE (lostfan @ Aug 6, 2013 -> 02:50 PM) I think that's all well and good, but with that attitude they've got no business throwing rocks at MLB for what they're doing. I didn't see or hear the people going after MLB, but you can bet that if Adrian Peterson or Aaron Rodgers were ever busted for PEDs, the NFL fans would be signing a different tune as well.
  18. QUOTE (lostfan @ Aug 6, 2013 -> 02:34 PM) NFL fans at large are pretty much in denial about PEDs in the NFL and I'm getting really tired of them s***ting on MLB for all the cheaters. Did MLB turn a blind eye towards PED use for 10 years and pretend they didn't have a widespread problem? Absolutely. But the NFL is doing that RIGHT NOW. I just don't think the NFL fans care that much. If it wasn't for the sacred home run record in baseball, fans wouldn't have been as upset either. If suddenly NFL QBs started throwing the ball 95 yards or running 3.95 40s, people might raise an eyebrow. Otherwise, you don't notice the clean or dirty guys, just still a bunch of large men hitting each other, PEDs don't affect their viewing.
  19. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Aug 6, 2013 -> 02:11 PM) True. But for me, Detroit's first name will always be f***. I also have a hard time seeing anyone but Detroit win the division, so that's almost a forgone conclusion in my head.
  20. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Aug 6, 2013 -> 01:42 PM) I'd rather f*** Detroit over vs KC or Cleveland, but that might just be me. The annual love-fest for KC's young players who have still not won anything has made me root against them more than anyone else.
  21. QUOTE (Dick Allen @ Aug 6, 2013 -> 12:24 PM) I don't remember the exact posters, but one guaranteed there were all star games in Allen's future. They were correct about Tony Pena. Tony Pena WAR w/ White Sox: 0.7 Brandon Allen career WAR: -0.2 Win for KW
  22. QUOTE (HickoryHuskers @ Aug 6, 2013 -> 12:09 PM) In a cruel twist of irony, their playoff chances will be dashed by losing several games to the last place White Sox. That's the one thing I have left to root for this season, spoiling the Royals playoff chances.
  23. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Aug 6, 2013 -> 10:38 AM) Wilkins has as much chance of being on the next White Sox winning team as Paul Konerko does. And I'd rather not watch Konerko keep flailing away or become a platoon hitter on another crappy team. Let this year be his swan song in Chicago. If he really wants to play another year to help pay cooling costs on a 16k sq. foot building in the desert, let him do it somewhere else.
  24. QUOTE (Brian @ Aug 6, 2013 -> 05:37 AM) The Dodgers 15 straight road game wins is insane to me. So I guess money can buy you a good baseball team after all.
  25. QUOTE (ChiSox_Sonix @ Aug 6, 2013 -> 08:25 AM) NFL Cracking Down On Celebrations Again Obviously because football is too fun. "As first noted by Pro Football Talk, reports out of multiple camps have officials warning players that they intend to more strictly enforce the unsportsmanlike conduct penalties already on the books. That includes: sack dances; home run swing; incredible hulk; spiking the ball; spinning the ball; throwing or shoving the ball; pointing; pointing the ball; verbal taunting; military salute; standing over an opponent (prolonged and with provocation); or dancing." Just waiting for a playoff game to be decided on an unsportsmanlike conduct penalty due to excessive celebration.
