  1. QUOTE (Wanne @ Jul 31, 2013 -> 01:13 PM) I say all the pics and everything...but MLB just put side by side video of Garcia and Miggy...damn. Identical stance, swing, etc...and Reynolds went on to slobber on him and talk about him learning from the best in Miggy and taking that with him. That was crazy, they looked so alike.
  2. QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Jul 31, 2013 -> 01:08 PM) I'm frankly surprised he's not a Yankee, honestly. Michael Young is now willing to accept a trade to the Yankees, not sure if they will go after him.
  3. QUOTE (iamshack @ Jul 31, 2013 -> 12:56 PM) I just wonder if the Pirates and Cardinals are waiting on each other to make a move...then if one does, the other would react. Also shocked that Texas hasn't done anything. It seems like Texas is trying to hit a home run, if they strike out with those big deals, maybe they will come back to a guy like Rios.
  4. QUOTE (Buehrle>Wood @ Jul 31, 2013 -> 11:28 AM) Yeah, I agree but my point is the Tigers being inept here opened the door for the Sox to do at least a little better. I don't think the Red Sox were going to back on not getting Peavy if we really pushed for another 10-15 guy in their system. They still would come out far ahead of anyone. You don't know that though. Hahn may have asked for more, and the Red Sox may have scoffed.
  5. QUOTE (GreenSox @ Jul 31, 2013 -> 11:20 AM) The Nellie Cruz thing is tricky. He's a FA after this year, so he goes into free agency off of a 50 game suspension. Alternatively, he could appeal the suspension for this season, serve it next year, but he'll have no contract. If the Rangers like him, I would think they could extend him at a bargain and then tell him to appeal the suspension this year, essentially pushing their short term problem to next year. From what I read, anybody who appeals their suspension faces a punishment of double the original suspension length, so it might not make sense to appeal.
  6. QUOTE (Buehrle>Wood @ Jul 31, 2013 -> 11:17 AM) Yep. Hard for someone to disagree with the this. The Tigers or Sox needed to push for more since the Red Sox got away with a straight fleecing. I think the Sox got fair value, the Tigers didn't. But when you are in win-now mode, value isn't always of utmost importance.
  7. QUOTE (caulfield12 @ Jul 31, 2013 -> 09:52 AM) What the latest on Cruz/Rangers/PED's stuff? Obviously the Peralta thing came home to roost with that particular move (Tigers/Red Sox). They really can't seriously think Tabata can hold up in a pennant race...can they? Or Presley? Rios and Pence are supposed to be the two best OF bats on the market. However, one fears GM's will now turn and say "well, we know you're desperate to dump Rios in order to play Garcia in RF so go ahead Hahn....convince yourself that Viciedo can play 1B and that you want to head into 2014 with Alex Rios as your #3 hitter again." Cruz is getting 50 games as well this week
  8. QUOTE (Marty34 @ Jul 31, 2013 -> 09:33 AM) What about De Aza instead of Schierholtz? De Aza's price is way higher than Schierholtz's would be
  9. QUOTE (lostfan @ Jul 31, 2013 -> 09:38 AM) Tigers aren't building a team, the team is already complete. They've got an open championship window they're trying to head through. You make that move if you have to. Kind of like the Bulls with the Bobcats pick, that's an asset and if you have a chance to use it to acquire a player that gets them over the hump, you don't hold onto the pick. Championships > assets QUOTE (TaylorStSox @ Jul 31, 2013 -> 09:38 AM) The Tigers need to win this year or next. Verlander is declining. VMart and Hunter are old. Peralta's juiced. Fielder and MCab are really fat. I understand completely why the Tigers made the move. But for the future, the Sox probably got a better player than Detroit did, so it's OK for Hahn to trade with a competitor, which the earlier post criticized. Detroit gets better today when the Sox suck, Sox potentially got a great player for the future.
  10. QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Jul 31, 2013 -> 09:28 AM) They're trying to win this year and they probably comforted themselves with the idea that Castellanos is playing corner OF right now. I know, but I was just commeting on the criticism that they Sox made a competitor better. Who cares about this year and seeing Iglsesias at SS the rest of the decade doesn't scare me. They gave up a potentially good young hitter too.
  11. QUOTE (IowaSoxFan @ Jul 31, 2013 -> 09:23 AM) Was hoping Hahn could do a little better in his first big deal as a GM. The Sox pick up another "toolsy" OF to go with the masses they have been stockpiling. This one appears to actually have a shot at the majors since he has had a little success, but the jury is still out. The biggest holes in the system are at the IF corners, and this deal does nothing to address that. Instead of chasing down a ML ready bat, he should have taken a few players that were further away. We will need to see what he is able to do with his other chips, as Garcia seems like he could be ready to step in if Hahn is able to deal Rios. The other pieces the Sox picked up look like bullpen guys and a UT infielder. The other problem is that it made two teams that you are trying to catch better. The Tigers have their SS of the foreseeable future with Iglesias who is cost controlled and elite defensively. Hitting .330 this season shows he can hit at least enough to stay in the lineup. We will see what else Hahn is able to do, but in a vacuum, I feel he should have done better. But they potentially gave up their RF of the future? Maybe it makes them better this year, but in the future they may wish they still had Garcia instead of Julio.
  12. QUOTE (fathom @ Jul 31, 2013 -> 08:39 AM) It better be some darn good prospects. That said, I think the Pirates go with Schierholtz to platoon with Tabata. Schierholtz (or DeJesus) make so much more sense for the Pirates than Rios does IMO.
  13. QUOTE (caulfield12 @ Jul 31, 2013 -> 09:08 AM) But Cherington clearing out Crawford, Adrian Gonzalez and Beckett went 50% of the way to his winning the award THIS YEAR. For the AL, Friedman, Beane and Antonetti are the other options for that award, with some probably giving it to Cashman, just, because...well, he has to deal with A-Rod. The Red Sox lost 93 games last year. They are on pace to win 96 games THIS YEAR.
  14. QUOTE (Eminor3rd @ Jul 31, 2013 -> 09:02 AM) Yeah, I get that. I'm just saying that it seems like consensus is that this is a no-brainer trade. It really wasn't all that "aggressive" to give up your pre-season #12 prospect and some ranom org guys for the best pitcher on the market with 2 years of control. I can't believe they wouldn't make that deal even with only one wildcard. He's also due $20 million for 1.5 years, is constantly injured and has been bad in limited postseason experience, so I don't think it was a no-brainer.
  15. QUOTE (fathom @ Jul 31, 2013 -> 08:38 AM) Yep, I can't see them giving up players on their major league roster right now given their offensive struggles. Holliday & Beltran aren't exactly pillars of health either. People make it sound like the Cards have zero use for Adams, but he gives them the option to move Craig around as needed, I think he is a vital part of their offense, even if he isn't technically an everyday player.
  16. QUOTE (Dick Allen @ Jul 31, 2013 -> 08:17 AM) The White Sox should ask Paulie if he wants to go someplace else. He has earned it. If Texas or some other contender want him, the Sox, if Paulie wants to go, should make it happen, even if they have to eat everything but the minimum. He probably doesn't because he's the captain and a captain doesn't abandon a sinking ship. I assume they already asked him and he said no. If he was playing better, I think he might be more willing to go somewhere, but I think he's happy to end it at home with little pressure. He already has his ring that he was a huge part of winning.
  17. Ken Rosenthal ‏@Ken_Rosenthal Source: #Cubs expect to move either DeJesus or Schierholtz. DeJesus might be more likely; Schierholtz fits vs. RHPs in ’14. #Pirates on both
  18. QUOTE (MuckFinnesota @ Jul 31, 2013 -> 07:33 AM) Thanks for bringing passion to the mound Jake. Your grunting and attitude was great out there. Way to fight back after the weirdest injury I have ever seen. We knew we were going to get a good game when you pitched which is more than we could say than that weak POS Gavin Floyd. Peavy ERA with the Sox: 4.00 Floyd ERA with the Sox: 4.22
  19. QUOTE (HickoryHuskers @ Jul 31, 2013 -> 06:49 AM) 84 appearances, 83 starts, 537.2 IP, 36-29, 4.00 ERA, 7 CG, 3 SO, 1.15 WHIP, 7.97 K/9, 3.66 K/BB Is it just me, or do those peripherals not add up to a 4.00 ERA? I think that comment sums up the Peavy era in Chicago perfectly.
  20. QUOTE (Eminor3rd @ Jul 31, 2013 -> 07:26 AM) So interesting how differently this guy sees this. Looks like highway robbery by the Red Sox to most, it seems. He's not saying that it's a bad trade for Boston. He is implying that two years ago, Boston would rather stand pat on win the wild card than spend $20 mil on Peavy and give up a few prospects. But the randomness of the new wild-card game forced them to be aggressive and go for the division.
  21. QUOTE (RockRaines @ Jul 30, 2013 -> 09:17 PM) Sending a message with at least a 3 game suspension, wow. Very stiff compared to other teams in the conference. Buffalo, San Diego State, and Cal. They won't even notice he is gone.
  22. QUOTE (Buehrle>Wood @ Jul 31, 2013 -> 05:03 AM) Yeah it is pretty shocking that the Tigers and White Sox both somehow let the Red Sox grab perhaps the best player on the market without giving up a single top ten prospect in their system. People made jokes that we were simply lucky to be talking to the sacred Red Sox, but looks like that was true afterall, ha. Their arrogant fans were right and then some. We will see what happens though. Doesn't mean it won't workout for us though. It sounds like Peter Gammons got to you too! Cherington did a good job of finding a desperate contender so he could only give up a lower rated but major league ready player.
  23. QUOTE (fathom @ Jul 30, 2013 -> 11:10 PM) I completely agree, and still believe the Rangers desperate move to give up too much for Garza made expectations unrealistic. Unfortunately Peavy got injured or maybe the Rangers would have went after him instead.
  24. QUOTE (Jake @ Jul 30, 2013 -> 11:00 PM) I think this is the next thread to blow up... Hopefully it waits until the morning, I need some sleep.
  25. QUOTE (Heads22 @ Jul 30, 2013 -> 10:48 PM) Well, we need a new banner. Either way, Garcia is definitely a high upside guy. I think we found it QUOTE (Kalapse @ Jul 30, 2013 -> 10:44 PM)
