Texas Hill Country?
QUOTE (NorthSideSox72 @ Mar 12, 2014 -> 01:21 PM) So, my wife and I have joked around about what warm place we might move to later in life when the kids are out of the house. I like the southwest and mountain west - sunny and usually dry. She likes the southeast with all its humidity. The place in between is.... Texas. I've spent time in El Paso, San Antonio and Dallas, and driven through parts of North Texas. None of those much appealed, though San Antonio was fun. I stumbled across (online) this area of south-central Texas called the Hill Country. It sits basically between Austin (which I've heard is a great town) and San Antonio (which we liked visiting). It is mostly smaller towns, rolling hills, warm but only sometimes brutally hot in summer, pleasant in winter, wonderful in spring and fall, moderate humidity. Low cost of living, good outdoor opportunities, not far from a couple cities... sounds pretty idyllic to me. But to be brutally honest, as my wife and I are native Midwesterners and liberal-leaning SOCIALLY (not talking politics here)... I have concerns about being in a place that's maybe too closed-minded and lacking in the types of people we usually hang out with. Perhaps that is just my unfair perception of Texas. Anyone been in the area? Any thoughts on it? Is my perception unfair or incorrect? I live in the North Austin 'burbs and usually hang around North Austin. I'll go down to South Austin to play softball. People here are nice and I think I've met more vegans here than when I was in Chicago/Champaign. I can't speak for what goes on in the Hill Country since the only time I've really been there was when I drove down to San Antonio. Maybe a good place for you to look at is San Marcos. It's a smaller town (I think Texas State University is there) so it's quieter than Austin or SA, but you also won't feel like you're out in the middle of nowhere.

Texas Hill Country?
QUOTE (farmteam @ Mar 12, 2014 -> 08:57 PM) Been to Austin once to visit a friend, it was a lot of fun, neat city. Just kinda weird, since it's the liberal bastion of Texas, but it's still Texas. Barely ventured into Hill Country, my they were telling me about it and it was basically exactly like you described. Went to the most amazing barbecue place I've ever been to, the Salt Lick Ranch. Spectacular. Salt Lick is great, especially the original. Although there are better around the Austin area.

QUOTE (witesoxfan @ Mar 13, 2014 -> 01:54 PM) I think it's tougher to measure based on some of the metrics in football because of how much everything depends on your teammates. Julian Edelman was considered to be one of the best receivers in the league last year, but does anyone believe that, or do they chalk it up to scheme and Tom Brady? The all familiar Chris Williams was considered one of the worst guards in the league last year, but when your QB is Kellen Clemens, do you think teams are dropping 7 back on a regular basis against the Rams? No way. It's possible he's talented enough but with nothing around him, he's going to be giving up more sacks and allowing more guys by. Same thing here...Young is working along side Suh, Fairley, and Ansah. He may be a nice player, but I'm guessing those numbers are flawed a little bit because of who is playing around him. He also rated really well in 2011 in limited reps. He's definitely an up and coming player who has the potential to be a great pass rusher. And yeah, football is always going to be a very team-dependent sport.

Like Jake says, PFF likes Young a lot. I like that we're not going after guys with sexy sacks numbers, but advanced metrics instead.

QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Mar 12, 2014 -> 02:15 PM) Didn't "play" = "was third string behind Caleb Hanie until the whole season went down the toilet"? We might have made the playoffs that year if McCown played after it was obvious that Hanie was just awful.

QUOTE (bmags @ Mar 12, 2014 -> 01:43 PM) Re: MD Jennings, I think it is reassuring to think that we basically needed 2 deep at every position this year, so not every signing is going to be a starter. He'd be fine as a backup. Just not a backup to Conte.

QUOTE (Dick Allen @ Mar 12, 2014 -> 01:39 PM) There are a few ways to look at losing McNown. The fact that he pretty much sucked before last year, so maybe the offense makes the QB and not the other way around, so it would make sense they can get a fill in just as good. Or maybe he was just fantastic last year and somehow found himself. Or maybe he was fantastic last year but it was a fluke and had he have stayed, his play would have dropped off to where he had been. 2 out of 3 are in the Bears favor, and they are the 2 that are most likely. You have to be happy for him though. He gets millions for a career that he probably figured was over a couple of years ago. He's not going to be very good in TB. The system and weapons he had made him the QB he was last year. He'll be back to a 70-80 rating QB with the Bucs.

NBA Thread 2013-2014
QUOTE (Brian @ Mar 12, 2014 -> 07:23 AM) Too bad because this is the first basketball league I've done with that type of scoring and I like it. I honestly don't like category scoring. This kind of scoring makes you get efficient players (since it's pretty much un-adjusted PER), but doesn't force you to build a well-rounded team like you'd have to do in categories. It's also a lot easier to see who's valuable and who isn't. I had to get a few new people this year because the guy who won the league last year left (he thought it was too boring).

QUOTE (scs787 @ Mar 11, 2014 -> 09:36 PM) Adam Schefter @AdamSchefter 52s While Denver focuses on DeMarcus Ware…Vikings free-agent DE Jared Allen is talking with the Bears and Seattle Seahawks, per league source. I'm intrigued. Though competing with Seattle gives me doubts. I would love to get Jared Allen. He's still pretty productive.

QUOTE (lasttriptotulsa @ Feb 28, 2014 -> 09:42 AM) Sources say Bulls close to signing Fredette. Jimmer can definitely shoot and the Bulls need that. He can be a quick jolt off the bench when the Bulls go into those horrible dry spells on offense. It looks like the Bulls are probably going to grab the 3rd seed. They definitely won't get passed the Eastern Semis, but maybe they'll be entertaining again in the playoffs.

QUOTE (Y2HH @ Feb 24, 2014 -> 07:42 PM) That's just something that doesn't concern me, as I've had every iPhone since the start and have never broken one of them, despite not using a case. They're phones not hammers, don't be careless with them. I don't throw my expensive watch around, either...it's not a baseball, it's a delicate instrument and though made to withstand some punishment, the wrong drop at the wrong angle can destroy it, so it should be treated as such. If a shatterproof phone is what you need, they make them, and they're huge ugly monstrosities. Oh, I don't throw rubber balls at my plasma tvs, either, because they'll shatter. That being said, IF that's such a concern to you, buy the insurance which is available for any device you buy and then you can shatter them at will. I personally have never broken a phone due to clumsiness. I've come close (dropped my uncle's iPhone 4 from about chest high straight onto hard flooring and it somehow survived) though. However, you can't account for situations you just can't control sometimes. In those cases, I'd rather have a phone that's less likely to break if I do drop it. I use cases though, so usually that's not an issue. I've dropped my Nexus 5 with the case on a few times and it's still in perfect condition.

QUOTE (Y2HH @ Feb 24, 2014 -> 07:02 PM) We agree on that, I think a flagship phone needs to be made of some sort of metal/alloy these days, I'm not a huge fan of plastic stuff at these prices. But that'd still be incremental. It doesn't even need to be like the HTC One. Sony's phones are absolutely gorgeous (see new Z2), although I don't know how shatter-proof they are.

QUOTE (Y2HH @ Feb 24, 2014 -> 06:45 PM) In Samsungs defense (I can't believe you have me defending Samsung here), the smartphone market is technologically mature now, and there isn't much other than incremental updates to add/tweak at this point. It's not unlike what the desktop market became over the years, where a bit more speed was the only real differentiator. Until a battery breakthrough is made, which is an obvious improvement, or a yet unknown and much less obvious idea emerges, there isn't much they can really do at this point. If people thought the S4 was a bad incremental update, then this is a far worse incremental update. I think the best thing Samsung could have done was improve the build quality of the phone. I don't think that requires anything groundbreaking to do. But they really didn't manage to do that. Instead, they made a phone with a slightly better feeling back that's bigger than the previous iteration in every way.

QUOTE (Jake @ Feb 24, 2014 -> 02:46 PM) It's good and they at least tried to do something about crap build materials. I'm glad they didn't add resolution as that s*** is getting out of hand and is a major battery suck. There had been a rumor that this might come in at a lower price than most flagship phones as carriers are applying pressure to OEMs to make phones affordable for non-contract purchasing (who thought we'd ever hear this? thanks T-Mobile!) I'm sort of disappointed that these two early flagships (HTC One and S5) are going to use the Snapdragon 800 and not the 805. And yeah, I really didn't see the point of a 1440p display on a 5 inch display. They did good getting rid of that awful glossy plastic, but the phone is heavier, bigger, and thicker than the S4. That's a step back IMO.
