2012 AL Central Catch-All thread
QUOTE (caulfield12 @ Jun 25, 2012 -> 09:41 AM) http://www.freep.com/article/20120625/SPOR...ews|text|Sports Front page HORRIBLE column. That the Tigers should acquire Carlos Quentin, largely because of his defense, haha. New positioning makes him better? C'mon! Where do they come up with this stuff? Yeah, he'll give them much better offense than Boesch or Delmon Young, that's for sure. It could be kind of a nightmare scenario for the Sox if he goes off ala 2008 or the first couple of weeks back in 2012. Then again, he could just as easily get reinjured. Brennan Boesch was never really a role or part-time player, either. Not until he decided to really suck this year. To be fair, Carlos was much better on defense last season than in previous years.

I can't believe Santiago was once our closer. His control sucks.

QUOTE (Stan Bahnsen @ Jun 25, 2012 -> 05:12 PM) And if you saw his hits yesterday, you know that both were of the extremely lucky variety. While I don't love it, I don't think the lineup change is too big a deal, unless Gordo suddenly tanks. That triple he hit would have been a hit with just about any OFers. Bourne and Heyward have great range, there's no guarantee your average CFer or RFer gets to that ball he hit.

QUOTE (kapzk @ Jun 25, 2012 -> 04:58 PM) Dunn and Hudson were teammates from the Dbacks while PV and Dunn were on Team USA along with Youkilis. I had no idea Peavy and Dunn were friends until I read an article about them turning it around this year. Adam must really be a great clubhouse guy.

QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Jun 25, 2012 -> 04:50 PM) And so he made a stink, wound up on the inactive list, and was traded a few weeks later. If Kobe Bryant was serious about being traded, that's what he had to do. Otherwise, the Lakers weren't going to move him unless something blew them away, because things hadn't truly come to a head. Plus the Lakers never get fleeced in any deals, they usually do the fleecing.

QUOTE (Steve9347 @ Jun 25, 2012 -> 04:56 PM) Daryl Van Schouwen @CST_soxvan Dunn was wearing Youkilis' Red Sox game jersey [from yesterday] during his pregame workout. Added sweat to youkilis' tears. So I assume Youk and Dunn are buddies. Is Adam Dunn friends with everyone we acquire or something? He was friends with O-Dawg too.

QUOTE (Steve9347 @ Jun 25, 2012 -> 04:04 PM) Only on Soxtalk would people complain about a guy with an OBP under .300 being moved from the 2 spot in the lineup. FWIW, it's over .300 and he's had a .344 OBP in June.

QUOTE (flavum @ Jun 25, 2012 -> 03:57 PM) My first reaction is to not like Beckham batting 9th, but what the hell...we'll see what happens. The bottom of the order is also an OBP black hole. Beckham's OBP is barely above .300. Viciedo and Alexei's are both 30 points above their batting average.

QUOTE (kapzk @ Jun 25, 2012 -> 03:56 PM) wow I would rather want Youkilis in a run driving position maybe batting 6th or 7th , now we are pretty much back to square one where I wouldn't be shocked seeing Beckham duplicate what Hudson was doing as the 9th hitter. With Gordon's history of mental instability, I wouldn't be surprised if he falls back into a slump again...

QUOTE (kjshoe04 @ Jun 25, 2012 -> 03:53 PM) Gordon really should be staying in the 2 hole IMO. Don't mess with what has been working for him of late. I was all for Youk hitting 7th or 8th. But hitting him second does make sense given his ability to get on base (when he is healthy). De Aza and Youk in front of Dunn and Konerko = lots of men to drive in for the latter.

QUOTE (Sockin @ Jun 25, 2012 -> 03:45 PM) Youk hitting 2nd. https://twitter.com/MDGonzales/status/217357411730731008 Holy crap, does Robin read the forum? Hahaha. I think I was the first to mention Youk should hit 2nd. I don't like the idea of moving Beckham down to 9 (at least hit him 8th...) since he's been quite good in June, but we'll see how this works out.

2012-2013 NBA thread
QUOTE (ZoomSlowik @ Jun 25, 2012 -> 03:50 PM) It'd more likely be Utah that pulls out on that deal. They don't need to be paying Andris Biedrins $9 million to be their 4th best big man (5th if Kanter develops). Yeah, that deal made no sense for Utah at all...

2012-2013 NBA thread
QUOTE (Jordan4life @ Jun 25, 2012 -> 03:44 PM) And this is why the Bulls will never, ever win a championship. The FO is just too timid and too afraid. f*** Luol Deng. He's going to play for his country or whatever. But they're not overpaying you by X amount of dollars. The Bulls are. You're not Scottie Pippen (even though 2K5 said you were). You peaked peaked 5 years ago. Yeah, you play good defense. You fit in a particular type of system. But you're no all-star. You're not a guy that can be counted on to produce offensively every night. If that GS deal is legit, do it. If GS pulls back, fine. But that's the type of deal needed to compliment your superstar long-term. I hate being a Bulls fan sometimes. There are all these lavishing rumors of awesome and unrealistic trades, but they get shot down in like 5 min because everyone knows the Bulls FO is too conservative to do something so out of the box. The FO is about as boring as it can get.

Technology catch-all thread
QUOTE (RockRaines @ Jun 25, 2012 -> 03:28 PM) Well, they bought motorola's mobility dept so I believe they have that vision at some point. A tighter integration between software and hardware would be beneficial to their customers. Motorola is still their own entity. The only way Google can make sure there is less fragmentation is to sell more Google Nexus devices. Putting an unlocked Galaxy Nexus on the Play Store was a great move, IMO. There are rumors that Google has 3 Nexus phones planned for the 4Q, which is good to see (this should mean multiple manufacturers, not just one). It's hard for Google to bring everyone back on the same page when any manufacturer can use Android on their smartphones. It's one of the drawbacks of open source.

Technology catch-all thread
QUOTE (Athomeboy_2000 @ Jun 25, 2012 -> 12:55 PM) Rumor is that Google MIGHT be handling system software updates from now on (taking it away from the manufacturers/networks). However, the leaked information might just be referring to the Google Nexus table that will be revealed soon. I'd love for that to happen, but I just don't see it. Google doesn't have the man-power to support every device out there. The only way would be for them to work with the manufacturers and I imagine they wouldn't be too thrilled about something like that.

Twins. Sox. Gamethread. Part 3
QUOTE (ChiSox_Sonix @ Jun 25, 2012 -> 10:48 AM) I was thinking about where Youk would bat as well and I think it has to be 7 or 8. Beckham has really started hitting the ball well and I don't think you move him from the 2 spot where he seems comfortable and productive. I'd also rather not drop Viciedo below 7 so Youkilis really should be batting 8 in front of Alexei Gordon's got a .730 OPS in the 2-spot, which is perfectly acceptable IMO. He's also hitting .299/.344/.460 in June.

Youkilis, $5.6 million traded to White Sox
QUOTE (TheBigHurtShallRiseAgain @ Jun 25, 2012 -> 11:43 AM) Here is what I found on Uni Watch. Any big leaguer who wants to change uniform numbers without switching teams better give eight months’ notice unless he’s willing to buy warehouses full of his overstocked jerseys. … Players must tell the commissioner’s office by July 31 of the preceding year if they want a new jersey. That is, unless ‘the player (or someone on his behalf) purchases the existing finished goods inventory of apparel containing the player’s jersey number.’ As in, every replica jersey, jacket, T-shirt, mug and anything else with a number that’s anywhere in stock. I'm pretty sure there are like 2 Jordan Danks jerseys in those warehouses.

QUOTE (Steve9347 @ Jun 25, 2012 -> 11:25 AM) I wonder how much $$ Danks2 is getting for 20. Sneaky Jordan Danks probably knew the Sox were getting Youk eventually, so he took #20 in hopes of cashing in.

Youkilis, $5.6 million traded to White Sox
QUOTE (caulfield12 @ Jun 25, 2012 -> 11:27 AM) Boston... 1) Had to clear 3B for Middlebrooks full time 2) Had to get Gonzalez back at 1B, where he's most comfortable 3) Have to prepare for Ellsbury and Crawford to come back....so Gonzalez really was struggling offensively as well, partly because he was so uncomfortable and akward out there 4) You can't have their equivalent of Buehrle/Konerko, World Series hero, on the bench....he should be able to play everyday at his age still, it's a respect issue in the clubhouse, with the manager, with Pedroia/Ortiz, etc. A-Gon's been awful this year, what happened to him?

Youkilis, $5.6 million traded to White Sox
QUOTE (kitekrazy @ Jun 25, 2012 -> 11:17 AM) If I'm on the other side of the fence, I would question why Boston made this trade. It doesn't seem good for them. A-Gon was playing RF to get Youk into the lineup. Youk was also hitting poorly and they're not going to sit Middlebrooks or Gonzalez. They couldn't bench Youk, Youk definitely wasn't cool with that. So they had a situation where the player that was on the outside looking in wasn't going to just sit there and be a pinch hitter. Add to the fact that Youk is well liked in Boston by the fans and his teammates and you have yourself quite a clubhouse situation. Boston's motives are clear...they wanted Youk out since there was a logjam at 1B/3B and he wasn't hitting all that well.
