Some of it is just his luck turning around. He was hitting the ball hard during his slump. It just kept going right to defenders.

The offense came out to play today.

Sandlin really struggles against left handed hitters and when there's runners on base. His splits for bases empty/runners on base are very drastic (.282 wOBA empty, .398 wOBA runners on base). His 49.1% LOB% also means half the runners he lets on scores. I think there's some regression to the mean due for him, but it's very clear that he has issues pitching from the stretch.

A's are 5-4 against them and actually hitting the ball pretty well after the Guardians series. I know Espada wanted to trust Hader to close the game out, but his stuff was nowhere near as good in the 10th inning. He already struggled to get out of the 9th. Asking him to throw another 25 pitches on top of that is way too much.

There's a chance that the winner of the AL West will be under .500. Just crazy.
