  1. QUOTE (ptatc @ Jan 29, 2015 -> 01:13 PM) It is a gamble. It's always a gamble with the mix of players and egos. However, the gamble with proven veterans is less. I'm not saying that the building of the farm system to the exclusion of trading them is wrong. It can work and does in several cases. I'm just saying that teams to not NEED to have a top ranked system to succeed. I'm lean more to the philosophy of retaining young pitching due to the injury rate and trading position players to get more pitching. I think too many people get caught up in hanging on to prospects when obtaining proven players has a better rate of success of retaining talent. However, it is more expensive. I agree with your overall point but the first post in the thread was essentially challenging the people who prefer veterans over prospects. My basic point is that the aspect of having a top ranked system really isn't that important. Ron Schueler hoarded prospects and had a top ranked system in the 90's. Where did it get the Sox? Nowhere (although you can make a case for the 94 WS canceled team) until KW took over and started trading some of them for proven talent. Again I'm not arguing against the minors, I'm saying that you cannot hoard the prospects and expect all of them to pan out. You can to trade some for proven players to be successful. Gambling with veterans is more often successful, but when it's unsuccessful it's a massive blow. Which is where my second point comes in. It's not about hoarding prospects or hoarding high priced veterans. It's about being able to trade 4 prospects away for a Jeff Samardzija, and still have a farm system that's got some talent in it. If some of our signings bust from this offseason, we aren't necessarily screwed for the next few years like we were last time.
  2. QUOTE (ptatc @ Jan 29, 2015 -> 12:48 PM) True. However, it is also more of a gamble going with the prospects because you have no idea how good they will be. Plus it usually takes a couple of years for the young player to settle in, if they ever do. you have a better idea MLB proven player is going to do. It's less of a risk. It doesn't change the fact that you're still gambling with major league players. Adam Dunn failed spectacularly while being paid quite a bit more than, say, Viciedo or Beckham. It's all basic probability with expected values. You're missing the overall point, though. We were able to spend big this offseason, trade prospects for good mlb talent, AND we still have a roughly top-15 system. You can have both a good minor league system and have a good, well paid, major league team. It's not one or the other.
  3. QUOTE (farmteam @ Jan 29, 2015 -> 07:45 AM) I wouldn't call them low interest rates. A significant portion of my loans were 6.7% when I graduated, but I believe they just about halved that rate recently...
  4. QUOTE (StrangeSox @ Jan 27, 2015 -> 11:40 AM) you do if you want to use the universal gas constant, otherwise you can use the specific gas constant which is just the universal gas constant divided by molar mass M if I remember correctly. Either way m and R cancel out so you're left with just pressure and temperature in this case. Mechanical engineer by degree/license but I don't usually deal with that sort of stuff actually. Only remembered it correctly (use absolute temp units not F or C, add gauge and atmospheric pressure) because I took the licensing exam about a year ago and it was heavily tilted toward thermal stuff. Ah, it's been a few years since I had to deal with that kind of thing, so I was really confused why you were using mass. ... back to your regularly scheduled NFL thread.
  5. QUOTE (StrangeSox @ Jan 27, 2015 -> 11:14 AM) that's for pV=nRT That would be the ideal gas law I always learned. If you wanted to include mass, wouldn't you have to divide by the molar mass? ... Obviously the m/n is constant, so the whole conversation is moot
  6. QUOTE (bigruss22 @ Jan 27, 2015 -> 09:52 AM) I'm probably in a deep minority here, but another site that I sometimes go to has tapatalk and I couldn't stand it on my phone. I too did not like tapatalk. Although, since I'm no longer in school, I pretty much never check Soxtalk from my phone.
  7. QUOTE (StrangeSox @ Jan 26, 2015 -> 08:55 PM) Guys I already posted the correct equations. Well, technically, "m" is the number of gas molecules...
  8. QUOTE (Jenksismyb**** @ Jan 26, 2015 -> 01:21 PM) Beckman is apparently telling people he was convinced he was taking the job. How do you get convinced about that unless the guy straight up lies to you? It's not like this wasn't the 4th or 5th time something like this has happened to him.
  9. QUOTE (bmags @ Jan 26, 2015 -> 09:17 AM) I wouldn't blame him if he did leave though. Barry Odom was a no-brainer hire, but Kul wants to be a DC and just got passed over after 15 or so years. He'll need to move to get that job. Maybe he just cuts that chord now. Just hurts to see prior to Beckner officially signing on. It's weird to me that he would go to a program where he quite possibly, even probably, will get fired in a year's time. I guess it must have been his only co-DC option.
  10. QUOTE (Y2JImmy0 @ Jan 23, 2015 -> 08:14 AM) You can tell he's a rookie if he's bringing his GF to Soxfest. Fanfests are notoriously "ripe" for the players. It's why so many of them enjoy going to these things. I think everywhere is "ripe" for a professional athlete.
  11. QUOTE (pettie4sox @ Jan 20, 2015 -> 03:30 PM) What kind of girls do you like? There are a ton of single women at my job. It's like an all you can eat buffet. It sounds a bit more like a Panda Express.
  12. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Jan 19, 2015 -> 06:39 PM) And another fall in attendance. It would take a Cardinals-esque run in order for there to be a real shift in fans. The Cubs have too many innate advantages at the moment.
  13. QUOTE (Buehrle>Wood @ Jan 18, 2015 -> 11:10 PM) Did you miss those last two minutes? He wasn't the one out there missing layups and throwing the ball away.
  14. QUOTE (Buehrle>Wood @ Jan 18, 2015 -> 02:04 PM) Groce is just so bad. No.
  15. Tate was 0-3 for 0 points with 2 assists last night in 17 minutes. Starks was 4-13 for 10 points with 4 assists in 24 minutes. I agree that the offense seems to run better with Tate out there, but I can't fault Groce too much for playing one terrible guard slightly more than the other terrible guard. Tate probably should have been in there at the end because Starks has more than established himself as a chucker, but at the same time Starks is also 93.3% from the free throw line right now.
  16. Since the defender can sag off of Tate, he can not only stop Tate from penetrating, he can also easily help cut off drives from the wings. This is a big problem for a player like Hill whose game is so reliant on driving to the hoop.
  17. Whenever Egwu fouls, it's like the other team is on a power play.
  18. QUOTE (Jenksismyb**** @ Jan 13, 2015 -> 11:58 AM) Then if you're Groce you tell Tate to take 10 shots in a game to keep the defense honest. They both shoot about the same percent (32% for Starks on 3 times as many shots, 40% for Tate). The fact that Tate was unwilling to even try to shoot in many wide open situations indicates to me that he thinks it's not a shot he's going to make at a reasonable rate. My overall point is that [insert your favorite coach here] couldn't win with this roster performing the way it is right now. And while the roster is mostly on Groce at this point, I'm not sure how much is player performance and how much is strategy when we have maybe 4 healthy guys at best who are deserving of any sizable amount of playing time.
  19. I think a lot depends on how well the Sox do this year. They'd be more inclined to sign him if we were winning, I would think.
  20. QUOTE (Jenksismyb**** @ Jan 13, 2015 -> 11:11 AM) Tate. Tate isn't a threat offensively, although he's shown that he's capable of driving and getting some FT's or hitting a jumpshot every now and again. What he does do is run the offense better. He's a better passer. He understands how to dribble into the lane and pass to an open shooter. I get that the roster isn't 100% and isn't what Groce was planning, but it's called adjustments. That's what good coaches do. I haven't seen it yet from this guy. Also totally disagree on the run and gun comments. That's how you attack good defenses with terrible offenses. I'm not saying you run down the court and jack up a three (they do that anyway!) i'm saying you quickly get into your set to maximize the number of possessions you have when you know the other team on their offensive possession is going to take the entire shot clock and won't be very efficient scoring the ball. I saw (and continue to see) way too much Weber bulls*** offense where everyone is at the three point line, passing for 30 seconds before jacking up a contested three. It's garbage offense and hasn't, and doesn't, work unless everyone is on fire (the Maryland game). I mean, someone explain to me why they weren't doing some ISO post plays for Hill? Why is it that after 4 years Egwu hasn't learned to look for a cutter during his post "moves" (I think i've seen him pass one time out of the post in about 50 attempts this season). Why aren't they running designed plays to get Egwu an open 15 footer on the baseline which he's deadly at? Why is it either terrible post move or 3 pt shot from him? Snider is absolutely the biggest issue here. He changes the trajectory of this entire program if he honors that verbal. As it is, this program is stuck out of the big dance unless Murray reclassifies or JCL becomes the best freshman in the conference next year. I don't see this team being any better next year with the additions of Abrams, Paul and JCL and the losses of Rice and Egwu. Jesus, we have to rely on Maverick Morgan and Darius Paul for an entire season. That's scary. Nebraska dared Tate to shoot unlike Maryland, and like everybody expected Tate wasn't able to make them pay. The result: we were playing 3 on 5, and the offense stagnated. That's how things are going to be until Tate actually hits those open shots or until Starks magically becomes worthy of playing time. The team just isn't good, and doesn't look to be good for the foreseeable future. Unless JCL becomes Melo Trimble or we get Lovett/Murray.
  21. QUOTE (Jenksismyb**** @ Jan 12, 2015 -> 02:18 PM) What really grinds my gears is his inability (or refusal) to call set plays. He gives guys way too much freedom. When Starks jacked up about 3 of his bulls***, rec-league, fall away three pointers, he remained in the game. f*** that. Sit his ass down. Those are TERRIBLE shots. You can't mount a comeback against a 9 or 11 point deficit with wasted possessions. Not to mention his whole game plan last night was stupid. Nebraska is a very good defensive team and a terrible offensive team. So why are they spending 30 seconds every time down the floor? Run and gun that s***. Sit his ass down for who? Cosby? Rice/Abrams? Hill/Nunn? Tate? As far as running and gunning, we need our guards to rebound because our F/C can't, which limits our ability to have those opportunities. I don't disagree with you in principle, but the roster as constructed is just not good enough. And that is definitely mostly Groce at this point. Everything changes if he can land a point guard or center, though.
  22. QUOTE (Jenksismyb**** @ Jan 11, 2015 -> 09:18 PM) Groce =Weber 2.0. Lose to inferior teams. Come out totally unprepared for inferior teams. Can't call a frigging set play to save his life. Pathetic. Losing the far and away best player off a mediocre team will do that to you.
  23. QUOTE (Tex @ Jan 9, 2015 -> 08:36 AM) 43 degrees, 28 mph north wind My golf team? Practicing and playing 9 holes. Raider Tough Sign me up coach, I'll play 18.
  24. QUOTE (bigruss22 @ Jan 8, 2015 -> 02:07 PM) Shoe companies are becoming quite the recruiting tool. Becoming?
  25. QUOTE (whitesoxfan99 @ Jan 8, 2015 -> 09:44 AM) That hasn't been the case in most games this year. It certainly was last night and that was easily the best game Tate has played against legitimate competition. Maryland also helped him out by going over the top of ball screens rather than just going under all of them like most teams will do. The question is can Tate take and make jump shots when guys go under screens because he is going to have to do that in the Big 10 or he will go back to killing the team when he is on the floor. I have my doubts that he can do it but I really hope he can because Tate with a jump shot is a guy you can actually play against high majors. I definitely am not a fan of Tate, and as far as I know he still can't hit those shots. It's more of a testament to just how bad Starks is when he is an improvement. Unless of course, Tate actually can start hitting those shots when he is needed to. Maybe Tate can be Brian's anti-Ulis.
