  1. QUOTE (witesoxfan @ Dec 16, 2009 -> 04:20 PM) yeah what's with that s*** Sorry I just didn't like the guy. All he did was swing for the fences and struck out 100 times. He hit for a terrible average and was poor fundamentally. A .240 hitter that hits 25 homers doesn't impress me at all. Plus he made a ton of errors.
  2. 10) Jose Valentin - he may not belong for his production but he is my least favorite sox player ever 9) Scott Schoenewis - just a terrible pitcher who kept getting chances 8) Roberto Alomar - for continuing to bring him back like he was the answer when he was well over the hill 7) DeAngelo Jimenez - lazy player wasted talent 6) Danny Richar - another joke of a 2b 5) Jerry Owens - i can hit a softball farther than he can hit a baseball 4) Luis Terrero - that year makes me ill 3) Joe Borchard - we all know the story here, shame cause i hung out with him and he was a really nice guy 2) Darrin Erstad - another overrated veteran who got way too many at bats 1) Andy Gonzales - man i hated 2007, i almost cancelled my season tickets the common theme on my list seems to be 2b and cf. i hope i am not adding rios to this list in a few years...
  3. QUOTE (Kalapse @ Dec 15, 2009 -> 04:53 PM) That kind of makes my point. I also refuse to use injuries as an excuse for poor production. And besides; he's gotten 430+ PA in 3 of the last 5 seasons. Kotsay doesnt deserve every day at bats on the Pirates, let alone a division contender. He can't hit.
  4. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Dec 15, 2009 -> 01:45 PM) Way better than in RF. Seriously, I have a better arm out of RF, and you have seen how I can throw! I think I saw you stumbling in RF one Friday night when my boy Dan was shooting baseballs at you out of the cannon.
  5. QUOTE (2nd_city_saint787 @ Dec 15, 2009 -> 12:32 PM) seems as though quentin is another question mark you guys have wasnt it just his wrist the last 2 years other than that hes been fine, and the wrist was his fault. I see no reason why he cant stay healthy enough to hit 30... as far as the rogers center goes http://espn.go.com/mlb/stats/parkfactor/_/sort/HRFactor USCF is ranked 4th in the most HR friendly ballpark while the Rog is ranked 17th I dunno, Carlos is starting to give me that Mike Brown feel. Always seemed to get hurt with some fluky injury.
  6. QUOTE (Rowand44 @ Dec 15, 2009 -> 10:46 AM) Coming from you, that means a lot. So good to hear. As long as its not your 8 million dollars it will be fine!! I really don't like Juan Pierre as a player, but maybe it will work out ok. He never walks and I think he has been misplaced in his career as a leadoff man. I think guys get typecast as leadoff man just because they are fast when they are not suited for that role. Now that I have calmed down from my initial reaction and thought about it more, it has the chance of working out. Just depends on how the rest of it settles in. Still need a big bat in my opinion.
  7. QUOTE (Rowand44 @ Dec 15, 2009 -> 10:41 AM) Love to see who we gave up. Not thrilled about this move at all but he's definitely better than the options we had. Better not have gave up much. dont worry
  8. QUOTE (ptatc @ Dec 15, 2009 -> 10:07 AM) Just wait until the stats guys hear this. The board will flame with how bad of a leadoff hitter he is and how bad of a move this is. Personally, I think it's an ok move. Not great but should help. well he is a bad leadoff hitter
  9. QUOTE (Dick Allen @ Dec 14, 2009 -> 05:50 PM) One advantage the Sox have over teams in other divisions is the weakness of the AL Central. If they could roll in the division they would be able to set their playoff rotation, one thing they weren't able to do in 2008 and many overlook. Next year, they are going to take away some of the off days. You aren't going to be able to ge by with a 3 man rotation. Except that the sox are part of that weakness. I don't see them rolling with this sad offense
  10. QUOTE (Chisoxfn @ Dec 14, 2009 -> 05:02 PM) The key things to consider is the following: Quentin will hopefully be healthy and if that happens he'll be a hell of a lot more productive - Beckham will have a full year under his belt - Rotation will be much better - Pen should be solid; Pena, Linebrink, and Jenks are better than they've shown and a healthy Putz would be a nice upgrade - Teahen should be a better hitter than Getz - Rios has a history of being significantly better than shown - Ramirez will be much better defensively and in year three much more consistent Obviously all of the above might not happen, but I expect most of the above will happen and that alone makes the Sox a hell of a lot better of a club. What makes them worse: - AJ had a significantly better season than normal last year - PK also likely will regress some - The leadoff man will be worse than Pods was - There is a glaring hole in the middle of the order. I will have to disagree on Linebrink at this point of his career. All that leads to is a slghtly better team in 2010 but not a scary playoff team.
  11. QUOTE (Chisoxfn @ Dec 14, 2009 -> 04:46 PM) He definitely hit real bad and I kind of think Kenny would take a do-over if he had to do it all over, but the club has a lot of Rios left under contract and historically speaking he's been an above average right fielder and if you moved those stats to left and factored in his defense, he's an above average centerfielder. I hate writing a guy off over a horrendous two month stretch. The Sox have tapes and he's had a lot of major league success. Rios will figure it out. I sure hope he does. I just think to rely on this happening and him being the key aquisition to make the playoffs might result in a lot of unhappy sox fans.
  12. QUOTE (jphat007 @ Dec 14, 2009 -> 04:39 PM) I'm sorry but Alex Rios is a long way from an All Star. He's making $10 million with a .247 .296 .395 .691 line. He wouldn't get anywhere near that money if he was a free agent this year. Correct, finally some logical thinking here.
  13. QUOTE (Chisoxfn @ Dec 14, 2009 -> 04:35 PM) A Cy Young Award winner and an all star that is on the right side of 30. I'd call those pretty darn good moves for an off-season. Sure, Kenny has more things to do, but to ignore what happened at the deadline would be a mistake. Those moves were made a lot more for 2010 and beyond than they were for 2009. To ignore how poorly Rios hit would also be a mistake.
  14. QUOTE (SoxFan1 @ Nov 30, 2009 -> 11:42 AM) I'd cream my pants if we signed Bonds. I'm all for it, and have been for a while now. Now that his agent says Bonds career is over, we can thankfully forget about this stupid idea to have him play for the Sox. There were way too many people on this board who thought this was a good idea.
  15. QUOTE (iamshack @ Dec 3, 2009 -> 05:22 PM) I guess the point I am trying to make (or the question I am asking), is that it appears that the impact Rios would make defensively in center field is larger than any offfensive player I can see us acquiring to play CF for his bat in Rios' stead (unless of course we traded for BJ Upton or something). We are flexible with Rios being able to play either CF or RF. The important thing is to get a high quality bat, whatever the position may be and then fill Rios in whereever. I don't think you should look at it where he makes the most impact defensively. Without any more sticks, its not going to matter.
  16. QUOTE (Kalapse @ Dec 3, 2009 -> 02:40 PM) Marginal offensive upgrade? People are throwing around the names Floyd, Danks and Hudson in possible deals for the likes of Adrian Gonzalez and BJ Upton, they're not exactly aiming low. One is an elite offensive player and elite defender at 1B and the other is an elite defender in CF (top 3 since moving to the position) and has tremendous offensive upside (should be a good leadoff hitter regardless). These would be incredible upgrades to the club and either player would be under team control for multiple seasons. Daniel Hudson's value is through the roof right now, if the Kenny can parlay that tremendous value into a great young ballplayer I'll be absolutely ecstatic because believe it or not I don't agree that the 400 or so innings that Omar Vizquel spends on the field this year will be anywhere near as valuable as adding a sure thing to this highly questionable lineup that finished in the bottom 3 of the AL in a sub .500 season last year. I agree with this. We need some significant offensive upgrades to be a serious contender and not let the excellent starting pitching go to waste. I think Hudson's value is at his highest point and now is a great time to deal him.
  17. QUOTE (Pants Rowland @ Dec 3, 2009 -> 10:22 AM) I agree that he is an aged 5th starter with big question marks about his health right now. What I meant is, in a big game, there is no one on the team who has historically put it all out there any better than FG. That is why I mentioned he had to be healthy, which I acknowledge is a big "if". I just think Danks is nails and has shown if the pressure is on, he can throw up zeros with the best of them. Gotcha. I really don't see a scenario where Freddie would be the guy you call on if you have a choice. I think Danks and Mark have the most guts on the staff.
  18. QUOTE (Pants Rowland @ Dec 3, 2009 -> 09:11 AM) To me, Danks at 24 is still a work in progress that is only going to get better. He had a tough rookie campaign. The league had him figured out and then he adjusted and put up a very impressive 2008. He pitched a ton more innings in 2008 than 2007 and the scouting reports on him became more precise. Hitters adjusted again and his 2009 was a little weaker than 2008, but just a little. I anticipate a stronger Danks in 2010 and another adjustment on his part. If the Sox had one game left in the season and it determined whether they make the payoffs or not, I would start Danks over Floyd, Buehrle and possibly over Freddy if his arm is not 100% (I have not seen enough of Peavy to make that choice just yet). Possibly over Freddy?? You are saying that Freddy and Peavy are our two best pitchers? Don't make him out to be more than he is, a 5th starter who is past his prime. I think Danks is going to be a very good pitcher in the next few years.
  19. QUOTE (Ranger @ Nov 30, 2009 -> 10:39 AM) Actually, of I'll the guys I'm concerned about, Freddy is the last, too. Gavin is a slight concern but I'm acually more worried about the health of Danks. He should be fine, but there is some concern. I think the reason we are all least concerned about Freddy is because he is the 5th starter. Thus, he is the easiest to replace. An injury to Gavin or John would have a much more negative impact on the team.
  20. QUOTE (sircaffey @ Nov 29, 2009 -> 09:36 PM) I still think Bonds could be an effective DH 5 days a week (.260-.380-.450+). He'd jump at league minimum at this point. So from a production vs cost standpoint, it would be a solid investment. As a fan, I would love the move, but if I'm management it'd be a tough move to make. I highly doubt he would take the league minimum, let alone jump at it. As a fan I would hate the move, I don't think he would be very productive at all.
  21. QUOTE (fathom @ Nov 27, 2009 -> 03:26 PM) Since you obviously have some sort of insight into the Sox organization, anything we should be looking out for next? I will try and keep you posted. I expect it to be quiet for a little while
  22. QUOTE (rowand's rowdies @ Nov 27, 2009 -> 02:26 PM) i don't see a lot of other good ideas. as I said in the first sentence of my first post, I'm NOT for it. just throwing an interesting thought out there. for all you know it alls, what's your answer to our DH/RF? and another old guy came back and made a vikings team older... * *i hate that man with all the hate in the world, even more than bonds, just for the record That qb is 40 and never took actual time off during the season. Huge difference. But I do hate that guy too. I don't have an answer to our dh opening but I know it's not bonds
  23. QUOTE (Disco72 @ Nov 27, 2009 -> 03:22 PM) I'm not sure if we're agreeing and disagreeing. My point was that the poster claimed Jones was definitely going to be a DH (at least part of a full time rotation there) while I claimed Jones would be a backup (though perhaps DH some). I never claimed Jones would be a starter. I was saying that I agreed with you 100%
  24. QUOTE (Disco72 @ Nov 27, 2009 -> 10:17 AM) According to KW, Jones was signed to be a backup OFer. Do you know something we don't? (Of course, he may DH some, especially if he gets hot, but it doesn't seem that the intent of the signing is as a DH... and I'm one who even suggested Jones as a platoon partner with Thome if the Sox go cheap at DH). I know things and he was not signed to be a starter
  25. QUOTE (elrockinMT @ Nov 27, 2009 -> 12:16 PM) If we were actually looking at a DH that sat out last year I'd raher it be the Big Hurt. At least he is a fan favorite Look character questions aside steroids lying perjury whatever. The fact remains the guy hasn't played in two seasons and he's 45. His career is over. If anyone thinks he is the answer to getting us to the world series you are nuts. This isn't a Minnie minoso cameo we are talking. This having the guy hit 4th on a playoff team? Name one time this happened in 100 years if baseball? This is a ridiculous thing to even consider
