  1. QUOTE (bucket-of-suck @ Jan 25, 2010 -> 09:56 PM) The Yankees, Angels and Twins have been doing it for years. Not with benchwarmers.
  2. QUOTE (Ranger @ Jan 25, 2010 -> 04:51 PM) You will get no argument from me that it is not ideal. I agree with that. I'm simply saying that the fate of this lineup does not necessarily hinge on the DH, especially if the big boys do their job. The Rays scored the 5th most runs in the league last year (7th overall) and Pat Burrell had an OPS of around .680 as their full-time DH. It's not ideal, but it doesn't mean it won't be good enough...especially in the Central. I think the bottom line is this: Instead of signing a starter, we're going to use bench players to DH. Doing so means we're intentionally crippling ourselves. The Rays didn't use Burrell as a DH because they thought he sucked but they'd be "good enough" anyway.
  3. QUOTE (Melissa1334 @ Jan 24, 2010 -> 02:30 PM) me. u's act like thome is god or something, hell he may be awful and get hurt. our offense isnt going to suck or be better, just bcuz of thome. and yes ill take jones and kotsay and whoever needs a day off , over thome. im sick of hr or nothing, old base cloggers. just my opinion, and eveyone has their own opinoin and no one is right or wrong. plz no It's NOT homerun or nothing! He walks 100 times a year! He'll reach base 50 more times next year than jones or kotsay, easily.
  4. I don't think some of you realize that if we DON'T get Thome (or trade for someone), our DH spot is going to be MARK KOTSAY and ANDRUW JONES. I'll rephrase: OMAR VIZQUEL WILL SEE TIME AS OUR DH
  5. I'm blaming KW for this. He acts like he knows better but wants Ozzie to be in control. Ozzie is a lunatic, and clearly under the influence of some kind of drugs during these interviews. The roster isn't his job. There's no excuse for KW deferring to Ozzie's ridiculous opinion on the roster.
  6. This is the dumbest thing I've ever heard anyone say involving baseball.
  7. QUOTE (Ozzie Ball @ Jan 23, 2010 -> 03:17 PM) When you say you tried "for the life of me", what did you actually try? I just Googled "Iguchi amazing play" and the first link was: http://www.extremesportclips.com/video/114...field-Play.html Tried: Tadahito iguchi Tadahito iguchi play Tadahito iguchi diving play Tadahito iguchi diving catch Tadahito iguchi diving throw Tadahito iguchi best play Tadahito iguchi best defensive play Thanks for the link
  8. This Jones/Kotsay thing is a bad joke. Why are you doing this Kenny?
  9. I want to show my friend Iguchi's diving play, but I cannot find it online for the life of me. Does anyone have a link? Much appreciated.
  10. QUOTE (witesoxfan @ Jan 21, 2010 -> 06:52 PM) Really Ozzie? Jason Kubel, from your favorite Twins team, DH'ed in 80 games; Joe Mauer DH'ed in 28 games; Justin Morneau DH'ed in 12 games. Why? Because they are GOOD. You want to DH Andruw Jones, Mark Kotsay, Omar Vizquel, and maybe giving an outfielder a rest (the only one who should ever be DH'ed in the first place is Quentin). It's like Ozzie has been given boxing gloves and now he wants to go play basketball with them on. I've noticed our collective rage growing over the last couple months.
  11. If they don't bring Thome back, whoever is really responsible is an idiot. Even if they win the WS without him, NOT signing him at this point is just stupid. The "flexibility" defense baffles me every time I read it.
  12. QUOTE (since56 @ Jan 18, 2010 -> 10:59 PM) The white sox did not win with Thome. That is the truth. Winning the world sieries is the only win. If you think winning 90 games or a division is winning maybe you belong in wrigley where they accept losing and losers. Right, so let's just play with bench players. We'll win for sure.
  13. QUOTE (SouthsideDon48 @ Jan 17, 2010 -> 03:10 PM) Edwin Jackson for Freddy Garcia. Rotation becomes: Peavy, Buehrle, Floyd, Danks, Jackson, pretty sick. Juan Uribe for Omar Vizquel. Uribe on the bench. Dunn for Lillibridge, put Dunn at either 1B and have Konerko DH, or put Dunn at RF and have Quentin DH. Sign free agent Fernando Rodney, discard Scott Linebrink. Sign free agent Darren Oliver, discard Randy Williams. Roster: Lineup 1. Pierre LF 2. Alexei SS 3. Quentin DH 4. Dunn RF 5. Beckham 2B 6. Konerko 1B 7. Rios CF 8. Pierzynski C 9. Teahen 3B Bench: 10. Kotsay 11. Nix 12. Uribe 13. Jones 14. Castro Rotation: 15. Peavy R 16. Buehrle L 17. Floyd R 18. Danks L 19. Jackson R Bullpen 20. Jenks R Closer 21. Thornton L Set-up 22. Rodney R Set-up 23. Putz R MR 24. Oliver L MR 25. Torres R LR I like it all, but you're supposed to just make ONE move
  14. QUOTE (Princess Dye @ Jan 17, 2010 -> 11:45 PM) To both of you: absolutely correct. But not at all on point. I was misquoted. I said I want a guy who, aside from power, is more useful w/ the bat than just homeruns. Walks have nothing to do w/ my original point. Never even mentioned them in it. I'm saying that walks should not be ignored. They're almost as good as singles. The ONLY reason they aren't as good as singles is because they don't score runners from second. It's been shown time and time again that OBP is more important to wins than batting average, meaning that in most instances it's a better measure of value. The only time OBP is diminished, in terms of run production, is when your SLG is super low. But Thome's is huge! The combination is deadly. I mean the guy has around100 walks every year. He's either getting on base or knocking guys in. When he gets out, he either strikes out (no GIDP) or flies out (potential sac fly). The walks cannot be ignored, and are one of the biggest reasons that Thome will bring astronomically more value to the team as DH than a Jones/Kotsay platoon.
  15. Yeah, he'll be good for middle relief when Randy Williams needs tired.
  16. QUOTE (Princess Dye @ Jan 17, 2010 -> 09:58 PM) This was in response to me saying Thome doesnt do tons with the bat besides hitting a HR. How is a walk something you do with the bat? It's the opposite of that. A walk is something you do at-bat that helps your team's offense tremendously.
  17. QUOTE (Princess Dye @ Jan 17, 2010 -> 02:24 PM) I think of Thome as someone who doesnt do a ton with the bat other than go long. Thome's .404 career OBP and 1600+ walks respectfully disagree. If we want a common denominator of offensive production between power guys and contact guys, it has to be total bases. Thome's OPS, even last year, was .847. Kotsay's was .717, Jones' was .782. There's simply no way this team isn't better with Thome than by rotating bench players as DH. There is no advantage to that, at all. At all. It's a ludicrous argument. "Oh, but Ozzie gets the flexibility to use players in different situations." How does he not ALWAYS have that? He can rotate players in however he likes, whether we actually have a STARTING player at DH or not. If he wants to start Jones/Kotsay/Lillibridge at DH one day, he can! If he wants to pinch hit Jones for Thome one day with a lefty on the mound, he can! Why not have someone GOOD there most of the time?
  18. QUOTE (since56 @ Jan 17, 2010 -> 08:14 AM) Why are we so locked into the stereotype of a DH being a power hitter. There wwere times last rear I would have had Pods at at Dh because we needed him at lead off but his defense was so bad I wouldn't want him out there. If you have a guy that can not play the field but can still hit what you have is a pinch hitter. Ozzie wants the Dh spot to be able to hit in match ups run the bases and go into the field if necessary. The DH does not have to be a home run or nothing guy. He will use his bench to fill that spot. That also gives him room on the roster for another picher. This would be fine IF we had enough power in our lineup. But we don't, so it isn't fine.
  19. Original post edited for salary rule. I like the Upton idea a lot. Of course Lincecum/Mauer are top notch options, but I personally would like to take a player that complements what we already have. IMO, our pitching and catching are the least of our problems.
  20. If you could pluck ANY SINGLE player in baseball from any team and put them on the White Sox, who would it be? Rules: 1. When you pick one, you must also DISCARD one 2. The player that you discard MUST be a player from Chicago's 40-man roster (or at least likely to make the team in ST this year) 3. You must consider payroll, at least in what it could potentially limit the Sox to do in the future 4. You CANNOT choose Albert Pujols EDIT: 5. You do NOT have to eat the salary of the player you discard. So, you can definitely use the discard for a salary dump. Here's mine: ANDRE ETHIER/Brent Lillibridge We put Ethier in right, Rios in center, and Pierre in left. This moves CQ to the DH position, solving that disaster. Bench is full of quality pinch hitters and we still have a leadoff. Nix/Vizquel will back up the infield just fine; we're better off knowing that Lillibridge will never see the field. Lineup becomes: 1. Pierre, LF 2. Beckham, 2B 3. Ethier, RF 4. Quentin, DH 5. Konerko, 1B 6. Pierzynski, C 7. Rios, CF 8. Teahen, 3B 9. Ramirez, SS Honorable Mention: ADRIAN GONZALEZ/Brent Lillibridge - PK becomes DH MATT KEMP/Brent Lillibridge - Same scenario above except Rios in right, Kemp in center EVAN LONGORIA/Juan Pierre - This is only if we would sign a DH like Thome, but we'd be short a leadoff guy. OF would be Teahen/Rios/CQ. What are yours?
  21. Please, PLEASE sign a DH! I do not want to waste this staff.
  22. I'm thinking Craig Counsell at this point. Yes, I'm the guy that voted "backup IF"
  23. QUOTE (chw42 @ Jan 12, 2010 -> 11:15 PM) Honestly, I think OBP is still the best way to judge a leadoff man since his job is to get on base. I agree with this 1000%. Speed is a distant second to OBP, so long as he isn't slow enough to clog the bases.
  24. This rotating DH bull is really giving me a headache. Seriously, if we waste this pitching staff by intentionally starting bench players in an EASY power spot to fill, Ozzie should have his job in jeopardy. I mean I've NEVER said that, but this strategy is just stupid baseball. It's just dumb. I cannot believe KW really buys into this.
  25. QUOTE (Princess Dye @ Jan 10, 2010 -> 11:03 AM) We've all gone from being terrified of being stuck with Thome again to being terrified of life w/o him. I just hope this time around they bat him a little lower and mix in Jones. I hope we get Thome and have for months
