2018-2019 Official NBA thread
thxfrthmmrs replied to southsider2k5's topic in Alex’s Olde Tyme Sports Pub
The issue isn't Lavine himself. Lavine might turn out to be a 23-5-4 player (with bad defense, bad team basketball, and lots of bad shot attempts), it is that we effective taken ourselves out of signing 2 max deals next summer (class of Jimmy, Kyrie, Leoard, KD, Klay, so on), and AD sweepstake in 2020 (hard to imagine AD coming here without a true perimeter star player). I know we haven't had luck in landing max level players in the past, but given up prematurely and throwing $20m at Lavine is just a lazy move. -

Fixed. -
It's a combination of people expected to see results immediately and people like Greg who would rather watch 80 win teams year in and year out hoping to sneak into the playoffs than watch rebuilding teams that has a chance to grow into a perennial contending team.

They weren't making the playoffs before the rebuild?

JR isn't a bad owner, I admire his commitment to win for both of his franchises. But his loyalty to his employees is a double edged sword and it's incredibly frustrating in the current landscape of the Bulls. Guys like Robin Ventura and Gar, Pax clearly aren't the right person for the job and would have been let go a long time ago by other franchises. -

Is there a more frustrating owner in sports in JR? All of his employee has lifetime job security so why make the risky moves? Just remain at status quo so we can make a 1st round PO appearance in a couple years. -
Do you want to be the Astros, or the Blue Jays. Do you want to be the Cubs, or the Mets.

2018 White Sox draft picks and signings thread

I didn't check the math, but it was mentioned earlier that max we can offer Bush is $450k. Since him and Martin were only $170k vs pool, the max we can offer right now should be $280k. -

I just saw that on PG as well. Del Castillo is ranked 136th in the the 2018 HS class, seems like a projectable catcher from the report. While there is not scouting report on Montgomery, he is ranked 81st in the nation. For comparison sake, fellow HS lefty Drew Rom who is ranked 84th went 4th round to the Orioles and signed for $650k. Looks like it will be a long shot for these two. -

Insane! I'll admit I know nothing about the other two, but surely would be fun to hope we can sign another one. -

That worked out incredibly well for the Sox. Not sure how much Martin is above slot, or if he is. If he isn't, we could possibly throw another $290k to Del Castillo or Montgomery to see if they bite. -

If you are Cousins, this is the perfect plan. This is basically a throw away year, no one is giving him the max deal until proven fully healthy. So why not take your time to recover, come back 2 months before playoffs and get that ring with Warriors and move on. -
Harvin Mendoza is the Gavin Sheets of rookie ball. Still only 19 years old despite being 3rd year in pro ball. If he continues to get the XBH, he will be an interesting name to follow.

OTOH, if the kid really believes in his ability, he shouldn't be worry about being blocked by the likes of Laz Rivera, Yeyson Yrizarri, or Mendick in the minors. Madrigal is our only real infield prospect. If we're talking about the majors, who knows if Anderson will still be on the roster 5 years from now or that Jr himself still plays SS.

Looks like Sox signed Braves 2016 3rd rounder (80th pick overall) Drew Harrington. Doesn't look too impressive as a starter prospect, but if he fails as a starter with the Sox, I think he's still worth following as a lefty reliever guy. https://www.talkingchop.com/2016/6/10/11904246/2016-mlb-draft-braves-select-drew-harrington-with-80th-overall-pick

2018 White Sox draft picks and signings thread

So for the 2nd year in a row the Sox has offered the most signing bonus to college guys drafted after the 1st round, guys who aren't universally viewed as first rounders. It isn't just slightly overslot, they're over by a huge amount. In Sheet's case, that could be late 2nd/ early 3rd money to a HS kid. -

Doesn't work that way. He has little leverage if a team before the Sox drafts him. -

I think you're giving too much credit to this FO. The biggest offense was resigning Mirotic when their goal was to tank and rebuild. This is a well known symptom with the Bulls for many years, that they simply cannot let average players go for nothing, even though it doesn't align with the goal of the team. Which is why I fully expect them to overpay and retain Lavine. Had we not had the Mirotic effect, we likely be looking at a 1st or 2nd pick. When it's all said and done, but we effectively moved up from 37th pick to the 22nd pick while taking on $14M future salary. But moved up from the worst record to the 6/7th worst. Second biggest offense is after we lucked into getting Bell at a spot much lower than most expected him to go, we sold him for cash considerations. General consensus was this is a bad move at the time (not revisionist history). Bell now looks like the next Clint Capela with maybe even more impact defensively and a better passer. I wouldn't be surprised if he was a top 10-15 pick this draft. Third biggest offense was poor talent evaluation and overpaid for Felicio who has only shown glimpse of potential but as the same time limitations. The worst part is locking him up for 4 years. I'm also surprised they couldn't at least get rid of Holiday, or even Lopez, but I will cut them some slack on this one. So had these moves not screwed up for us, we'd like be looking at a core of Bell/Lauri/Doncic/Dunn with money for 2 max players this and next year. I'll give credit to them for hitting the the Lauri pick and buying low on Dunn. But they haven't gotten much right for this rebuild ever since. -

This. It's like we're coming down to the end of the signing period, and we have no intention of using the extra money, so why not just give someone a nice hunk of overslot money. I find this quite annoying, as I pointed out, Walker is the only one in his circumstances signed for that much. -

Assuming we do sign Madrigal for $6M, and Martin is a $75K hit against pool, we can give up to $650K to one of the HS picks. That's firm 3rd round money in even factoring in inflation 3 years from now. I think we have a strong chance at say Bryce Bush if Madrigal is underslot. -

Looking at the signing bonus of the top 10 below, I fully expect Madrigal to be an underslot. $6M seems like a good estimate. Also interesting that the only guys signed for $2M or greater after round 1 are HS kids you have to pry away from colleges. Given Walker isn't universally viewed as a 1st round pick, it surprised me a bit we ended up paying of 1st round money for him. http://www.spotrac.com/mlb/draft/ -
He had a sprained thumb ligament, but said himself has also been bothered by wrist soreness. I am not sure when or how that came aboutl

If you don’t think the universal title change is a big deal, then Raw isn’t for you. Whether you like Lesnar or not, he only lost like once in 4 years. The next person to beat him is a big deal. The fact that the title hasn’t changed hands in 500 days is a big deal. (Main title change doesn’t happen often these days, even over at SDL.) Simply put, the universal title is going to elevate certain guys into much more credible performers. Some guys need it, guys who aren’t as protected (like Balor, Elias, or Rollins), some guys don’t, guys who are heavily protected (like Stroman, Lesnar, Reigns, Cena). -
They drafted an 11th round talent with the 7th overall pick.

Raw power does not equate to game power. Players learn to tap into their raw power as they get more experience. If the raw power is there, there is hope that he can hit for more power in the future. A kid with 50 hit tool, 70 raw power and strong plate discipline is not a 6th, 7th round pick.
