  1. bring on the pretenders... http://news.yahoo.com/s/usnw/20060413/pl_u...resident106_xml
  2. honestly this is my perception on things. i don't worry about the cubs anymore. now we are at a completly different level from them. cubs fans "get off" on sox fans jealousy. quite frankly, we have nothing to be jealous of.
  3. ozzie, pull him here. let him walk away with a (W) today.
  4. maybe you bring in Cotts here for the last out of the 8th, and leave it to Jenks to close out in the 9th?
  5. 102 pitches as he walks Granderson with 2 outs.
  6. 95 pitches thru 7 2/3rds. Question being, do you leave him out there for the 9th?
  7. Granderson goes deep. 1-1 cancel, this... damn you Gameday!!!!
  8. QUOTE(Soxbadger @ Apr 11, 2006 -> 09:50 PM) There is a great irony that today we sit at a fork in the road, where ex-immigrants are trying to make it harder for future immigrants. No matter how high and mighty I may become, I will never forget that if it were not for the leniant immigration policies of the 19th and 20th century, my family may never have had the chance to come here. So give us your tired, your hungry, your poor, because it is the American way to accept them. Let them take jobs, let them compete, because that is American. It is only those who are lazy, those who are drains on society that fear the immigrants. Because can an immigrant that can not speak my language, that has not gone to high school, college, etc, really compete for my job? The answer is no, and the reality is not one illegal immigrant has ever taken a job that I have wanted. They take jobs from those who are no longer deserving, because they will work harder and for less. Its time to stop crying and asking for a bigger govt to come and protect us.
  9. if this has been posted elsewhere, I apologize. These just made me laugh. http://sports.espn.go.com/espn/page2/story.../offbase/060329 My favorites include... N.Y. YANKEES -- Owner George Steinbrenner followed up his posted notice apologizing to fans for the absence of third baseman Alex Rodriguez, shortstop Derek Jeter and outfielders Johnny Damon and Bernie Williams due to the World Baseball Classic by posting a notice to fans apologizing for the presence of right-handed pitcher Tanyon Sturtze on the roster. … A-Rod sat out Tuesday's game because he could not decide whether to wear the Yankees' home alternate jersey or their white pinstripe top because wearing either wouldn't be fair to his T-shirt. SEATTLE -- The Mariners continued their strong Japanese presence by signing Iron Chef Morimoto as their team cook and middle reliever. CHICAGO CUBS -- RHP Kerry Wood was struck by lightning while playing long toss. The Cubs listed him as day-to-day. … RHP Mark Prior was hit by a bus on the way to the ballpark. The Cubs named him their Opening Day starter. COLORADO -- The Rockies announced Tuesday they are withdrawing from the National League. No one noticed. HOUSTON -- The Astros are close to re-signing 43-year-old RHP Roger Clemens to a $10 million contract that will require him to only pitch weekday home games against the Pirates, Rockies, Nationals and Cubs in months with an "R" in them if the moon is full and his son is on the roster. N.Y. METS -- First baseman Julio Franco missed Tuesday's game when he forgot where he placed his car keys. And his teeth. … The Mets cut 42 more players Tuesday, leaving them with just 81 on their roster heading into the final weekend of spring training.
  10. kudos to them for trying to make money anyway they can.
  11. QUOTE(NorthSideSox72 @ Mar 24, 2006 -> 02:42 PM) And I wonder how residents of the Bahamas feel about this. they'll probably welcome them as liberators and throw parades in the streets.
  12. QUOTE(KipWellsFan @ Mar 24, 2006 -> 02:18 AM) http://apnews.myway.com/article/20060324/D8GHKOIOI.html Where will this go from here, if anywhere? probably no where. my only question is, what's with the no-bid contracts? you would think with such a large deficit, the govt would bid these guys out against each other and negotiate a lower rate.
  13. QUOTE(WCSox @ Mar 24, 2006 -> 12:38 AM) This post is a great example of why nobody votes for liberals anymore. classy.

QUOTE(YASNY @ Mar 23, 2006 -> 04:54 AM) The fact that someone saw fit to post this crap is what happens to be ridiculous. The responses to it are justified. It's garbage. ^^^^^^^^^^^^^^
  15. QUOTE(jasonxctf @ Mar 22, 2006 -> 08:36 PM) i was about to say the same thing. these responses seem to fit the study well. if this is egging people on, then some people aren't able to handle a joke. what, the big smiley face didn't give it away? The funny lookin dude with the bring it sign, didn't tip you off? Christ....
  16. give me a break. My posting of this study wasn't supposed to be taken seriously. Just given the right a hard time and serving as a conversation piece. So quick to attack the messenger. Don't take things so seriously.
  17. QUOTE(samclemens @ Mar 22, 2006 -> 08:54 PM) every conservative who calls this poll what it ought to be called is titled a whiner and verifies the results. you should ask me next if i still beat my wife. do you still beat your wife?
  18. QUOTE(bmags @ Mar 22, 2006 -> 08:31 PM) i see the conservatives are finding their inner child to whine about this one. i was about to say the same thing. these responses seem to fit the study well.
  19. http://www.thestar.com/NASApp/cs/ContentSe...id=970599119419 first paragraph of the story reads... Remember the whiny, insecure kid in nursery school, the one who always thought everyone was out to get him, and was always running to the teacher with complaints? Chances are he grew up to be a conservative. At least, he did if he was one of 95 kids from the Berkeley area that social scientists have been tracking for the last 20 years. The confident, resilient, self-reliant kids mostly grew up to be liberals.
  20. for asking the tough questions. Wish there were more reporters like you. BUSH TAKES ON PRESS AND HELEN THOMAS TOO Tue Mar 21, 2006 13:34:11 2006 Helen Thomas, who in January grumbled that President Bush was a "coward" for not calling on her at a press conference, today was granted a question for the first time in several years. The doyenne of the White House press corps, who once called Bush the worst president in U.S. history, seized her chance with gusto, essentially debating Bush instead of questioning him. Here's the transcript: THE PRESIDENT: Helen.Ê After that brilliant performance at the Grid Iron, I am -- (laughter.) Q: You're going to be sorry.Ê (Laughter.) THE PRESIDENT: Well, then, let me take it back.Ê (Laughter.) Q: I'd like to ask you, Mr. President, your decision to invade Iraq has caused the deaths of thousands of Americans and Iraqis, wounds of Americans and Iraqis for a lifetime.Ê Every reason given, publicly at least, has turned out not to be true.Ê My question is, why did you really want to go to war?Ê From the moment you stepped into the White House, from your Cabinet -- your Cabinet officers, intelligence people, and so forth -- what was your real reason?Ê You have said it wasn't oil -- quest for oil, it hasn't been Israel, or anything else.Ê What was it? THE PRESIDENT: I think your premise -- in all due respect to your question and to you as a lifelong journalist -- is thatÊÊ -- I didn't want war.Ê To assume I wanted war is just flat wrong, Helen, in all due respect -- Q: Everything -- THE PRESIDENT: Hold on for a second, please. Q: -- everything I've heard -- THE PRESIDENT: Excuse me, excuse me.Ê No President wants war.Ê Everything you may have heard is that, but it's just simply not true.Ê My attitude about the defense of this country changed on September the 11th.Ê We -- when we got attacked, I vowed then and there to use every asset at my disposal to protect the American people.Ê Our foreign policy changed on that day, Helen.Ê You know, we used to think we were secure because of oceans and previous diplomacy.Ê But we realized on September the 11th, 2001, that killers could destroy innocent life.Ê And I'm never going to forget it.Ê And I'm never going to forget the vow I made to the American people that we will do everything in our power to protect our people. Part of that meant to make sure that we didn't allow people to provide safe haven to an enemy.Ê And that's why I went into Iraq -- hold on for a second -- Q: They didn't do anything to you, or to our country. THE PRESIDENT: Look -- excuse me for a second, please.Ê Excuse me for a second.Ê They did.Ê The Taliban provided safe haven for al Qaeda.Ê That's where al Qaeda trained -- Q: I'm talking about Iraq -- THE PRESIDENT: Helen, excuse me.Ê That's where -- Afghanistan provided safe haven for al Qaeda.Ê That's where they trained.Ê That's where they plotted.Ê That's where they planned the attacks that killed thousands of innocent Americans. I also saw a threat in Iraq.Ê I was hoping to solve this problem diplomatically.Ê That's why I went to the Security Council; that's why it was important to pass 1441, which was unanimously passed.Ê And the world said, disarm, disclose, or face serious consequences -- Q: -- go to war -- THE PRESIDENT: -- and therefore, we worked with the world, we worked to make sure that Saddam Hussein heard the message of the world.Ê And when he chose to deny inspectors, when he chose not to disclose, then I had the difficult decision to make to remove him.Ê And we did, and the world is safer for it. Q: Thank you, sir.Ê Secretary Rumsfeld -- (laughter.) Q: Thank you.

    Ha!

from sportspickle. Gutsy WBC pitcher throws nearly 50 pitches in a single day Odalis Perez, a starting pitcher for the Dominican Republic in the World Baseball Classic, put his health and future on the line Monday, gutting out 4 2/3 scoreless innings on the mound by hurling 48 pitches against Cuba on the way to a 7-3 win. “A performance like this shows how much these guys are willing to do for their country,” said Dominican manager Manny Acta. “Throwing nearly 50 pitches – in just one day! That’s the stuff of legend, I don’t need to tell you that. People talk about how durable pitchers were in the old days, but I doubt any of them can match the pitchers of today. I mean, Odalis threw 42 pitches less than a week ago. He’s amazing.” WBC officials implemented a pitch count for each round of the Classic so pitchers don’t overdo it and injure themselves. A maximum of 65 pitches were permitted for round one, while 80 will be allowed for the second round and 95 for the semifinals and finals. Plus, a 30-pitch outing must be followed by a day off, and a 50-pitch performance must be followed by at least four days of rest. “It’s great there are pitch limits,” said USA manager Buck Martinez, “because if there’s one thing we know about modern day pitchers, it’s that they are very, very durable. Although the 95-pitch limit in the final rounds is kind of funny. I don’t think a human arm can endure such stress as throwing a ball 95 times. I’ve heard rumors of people doing it years and years ago, but I think that’s the stuff of urban legend.”
