  1. QUOTE (witesoxfan @ Jul 25, 2011 -> 02:37 PM) We probably won't have to worry about that next year anyways, so that's OK in my book. *Hopefully* we don't have to worry about it.
  2. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Jul 25, 2011 -> 02:32 PM) If the Sox can move TCQ, Jackson, and Thornton, that is $20 million in contracts gone, or about $8million this year. If they get back some quality kids in the process, they have just rebuilt on the fly again. My hope is that money coming off the books, combined with our slight "youth movement" allows us enough cash to re-sign Buehrle. I can't picture him in another uniform.
  3. QUOTE (WHITESOXRANDY @ Jul 25, 2011 -> 02:00 PM) If the Tigers add a quality starting pitcher like they are trying like crazy to do then the Sox are done. They can't catch Detroit with another solid starter even if they got Rasmus for Jackson straight up. The Sox are just not good. They will not finish ahead of Minny and Detroit merely by adding Rasmus and bringing up Viciedo. Who is this quality starter their going to get. Their really isn't much out there. Why would the Tigers adding a pitcher automatically give them the division, but the Sox adding a bat would give them nothing? What's the logic in that. The Tigers have been outscored by their opponents this year, but are somehow 7 games over .500. That kind of trend usually does not last a whole season.
  4. QUOTE (Paulie4Pres @ Jul 25, 2011 -> 11:41 AM) Yes, Rasmus is likely an upgrade over Rios. I'm not sure how much, right now, but he is likely an upgrade. Especially going forward. The problem is, Rios is still here. He hasn't gone anywhere. He hasn't been waived, traded, or killed. The Sox won't acquire him and bench Rios. Unfortunately, room would need to be made for Rasmus, since Rios is likely going NOWHERE. That probably means Quentin is going somewhere. Pierre/Rios/Rasmus is NOT an improvement, now, or for the future. Until Rios is somehow removed from the equation, what sense does it make to acquire another CF? This is a move made for the future as much as right now. With Rasmus, you have the flexibility to sit one of Pierre or Rios. Basically rotating 4 guys for 3 positions. Come next year, I believe CQ will be gone (if he doesn't get traded this year). Then we will have an outfield of Viciedo/Rasmus/Rios which has the potential to be pretty studly if Rios can improve upon this year. That outfield will be set for the next 3 or 4 years. If a guy with Rasmus's talent becomes available for as seemingly little as it's gonna take to get him, you gotta take the chance.
  5. According to Doug Padilla, the deal that's being discussed is Jackson OR Thornton plus a prospect. Not both.
  6. QUOTE (elrockinMT @ Jul 24, 2011 -> 11:48 AM) I wonder what team needs to make such a trade more? If you agree that pitching is a cornerstone of a winnnig team we seem willing to admit we aren't in it and trade two pitchers for an outfielder, who may have talent mind you, but has been criticized for the same type of play we attribute to Rios. I don't like players with negative attitudes. I can see making trades that improve both teams, but to do afire sale is simply admitting you can't win your division. Kind of like we give up cause we aren't in frst place. Only six teams are in 1st so 24 should be sellers. If we have no intyention of trying to keep our starting staff intact then by all measn try and make such a trade using Jackson. But, not both Thornton and Jackson. Maybe the Sox are looking for more young talent in return so trading both makes sense then. Regardless, you make trades to help your team fill a need not open more up. Remember, we do have 6 starting pitchers this year. And Thornton really hasn't been Thornton this year anyways.
  7. Let's see if Jackson can spin himself another shut-out today to make him seem more valuable.
  8. QUOTE (flavum @ Jul 24, 2011 -> 11:26 AM) Tony LaRussa can do that to some people, especially young players. Maybe a fresh start is what Rasmus needs. That's my understanding too. The real problem lies in Rasmus vs. LaRussa.
  9. QUOTE (oldsox @ Jul 21, 2011 -> 09:26 AM) MLPA would never let Dunn just walk away from his contract. What are they gonna do about it? If he wants to retire, he can retire.
  10. QUOTE (JoeCoolMan24 @ Jul 20, 2011 -> 11:52 AM) Glad we gave Santiago a good look out there on the mound. We could have very easily just let him rot on the bench and hardly ever use him, but it was nice to see him get a fair shot. We did pretty much let him rot. He was on the roster 3+ weeks and pitched twice.
  11. QUOTE (greg775 @ Jul 19, 2011 -> 02:53 PM) Well, I'd say odds are 50-50 at least it'll be Cora. Is Buddy Bell still in the picture? He is blah. What manager is beloved by his/her fanbase for his in-game decisions? Cmon. You lose a game the fans can blame the manager. Lose a few in a row and fans usually want the manager's head pinpointing all the "dumb moves" that cost the team games when in reality it's all second guessing. My guess is the next guy will not be loved. And that guy could be Cora. Doesn't Jerry like him? Isn't Jerry loyal? My guess is that if Ozzie is canned, Cora is out the door with him. With many of Ozzie's decisions, its not just second guessing, they were just down right stupid. I can think of at least two occasions this year where we had a guy on first with Paulie on deck and Ozzie bunts him to second. That opens up first base and takes the bat out of Konerko's hands to bring up Adam Dunn who has struggled mightily this year. I mean come on think about it.
  12. QUOTE (caulfield12 @ Jul 19, 2011 -> 01:09 AM) Should they trade Buehrle right now? Probably. Will they? Definitely not, KW would face an insurrection. And they're still not going to get Rasmus straight up for Buehrle, because the Cardinals are still taking on around $5 million in additional salary. If the White Sox paid for most of the rest of the year, you POSSIBLY could get Rasmus, but they won't do that. #2, they're not going to do it simply because it means you have to bench Rios or Pierre, and/or trade Quentin. Otherwise, you're acquiring Rasmus and basically writing off $43 million in Rios. Unless you're going to bench Rios for two whole months, then name him the starter again coming into 2012, along with Dayan. And you know how much KW and Ozzie love their "traditional" leadoff hitter. Just not a snowball's chance in hell that the organization would have any credibility with the fans approaching 2012 with Rios as the annointed leadoff hitter to replace Pierre. On top of taking on $5 million this year. Buehrle has a vesting option for $17 million for 2012 if he gets traded. I don't think many teams are gonna want to touch that.
  13. QUOTE (South Side Fireworks Man @ Jul 15, 2011 -> 03:10 PM) I prefer they go 12-0 in the next twelve games. Exactly. Under NO circumstances could I ever root against the Sox.
  14. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Jul 15, 2011 -> 10:23 AM) Deadspin is wrong about his slugging numbers. Wrong by a lot actually. Yea I wanna see the kind of funny math it takes to have a SLG lower than your BA. But seriously, checking Baseball Reference, its .338 so it was just a typo.
  15. QUOTE (GoSox05 @ Jul 15, 2011 -> 09:24 AM) I can't figure out what most of his tweets say. Same with me, and then with half of em being in Spanish, I just quit following him.
