What is the universe from which the weights are created? All of MLB history? The last 10 years? The last year? There's still some subjectivity there in deciding that part of it, but I agree that wOBA is better than most.
-
Thornton probably is. Possibly a few others as well.

Well, I haven't read the story, but a story about this guy in a July pop culture magazine when the event happened in April is probably not just "reporting on an event that happened".
-
I think the general perception is that when a news magazine writes an article about somebody who has done something bad, they are doing it as a news story and when a pop culture magazine writes about the same person, they are generating attention the person doesn't deserve. This particular company is also based in New England, so I can see how they feel like they are supporting the victims and their families by not subjecting them to that guy's face when they walk into their store.

If you went out this December and tried to sign a FA 1B/DH who you expected to put up a .350 OBP and .490 SLG, how much do you think it would take?
-
Yes, and the difference between OPS and the more advanced saber-stats is that while OPS does not tell the whole story, it's still a rate stat easy to compute and understand, along the same vein as AVG. I'm still a little bit leery of using stuff like WAR and RC, because once you start making adjustments for things like park factor and such, you are introducing some margin of error.

That's always the downside to taking a stand, but if someone feels that taking a stand is worth it, then do it.

Comparing how one company reacted to something today with how they reacted 40 years ago is pointless, especially since the company barely existed 40 years ago. Who's to say the people currently running CVS wouldn't have reacted the same way back then?
-
Yeah, let's compare anything now to something 40 years ago. That's 2 generations difference.
-
I think there's a big difference between a news magazine putting a "bad person" on the cover and a pop culture magazine doing it.

POTW or POTY?

Rios has a reasonable 2015 option, and with the pitching the Sox have it's not out of the question that he could be a significant contributor on a contending team in 2015, so I'm in ho hurry to dump him just to dump him. If Hahn doesn't get a premium haul for him by the end of July, then hang on to him and maybe a better deal is there in December and if not I'm not going to complain if he's still with the Sox in April.

Peavy to Boston, Avisail Garcia + 3 low lv specs to Sox

If the Sox got Owings, he'd probably be the best hitter on the team. -
At some point recently MLB changed the rule to make it so that there is a DH for every all-start game, regardless of home field.
-
Not to say that Zimmerman couldn't have been lying or exaggerating, but on his call to police he described behavior beyond simply being black, dressed in a hoodie, and walking. Something to the effect of stopping and staring at some of the houses.
-
For the second time, a Sox player deserves the MVP but is beaten out by a purely sentimental pick.
-
Which is exactly why Zimmerman has the right to call the police, but not to pursue the kid. He clearly wasn't trained on how to deal with the situation once confronted. If he stays in his car, the police probably don't end up killing the kid. Yes, some people might get pissed off that a black kid got stopped and questioned when he wasn't doing anything wrong, but at least the larger tragedy is avoided.
-
Depending on the location and time of day, yes he might. Still, I don't think the problem is that Zimmerman singled this kid out as suspicious and called the police. The problem is that he left his vehicle to follow/pursue him, which is not a good something a civilian should be doing regardless of the suspicious person's race or attire.

Well then try this one:

They are saying the right things for now, but I will reserve judgment until we get to the point where the various people who are exacting their own revenge get to trial, and see where there defense money is coming from.
-
They are saying what they have to say in order to keep the money rolling in, just like any other politician.

Actions speak louder than words.

Any video of this?

Yes, they are saying that now, but the violence is happening, and I'd be willing to bet that their dollars are going to end up in the hands of attorneys defending those committing the violence.
