Some team that is desperate for relief pitching could still trade for Crain. The offer would be a lot lower than if he had made 2-3, or even 1 appearance after coming off the DL, but it's not out of the question that somebody could still take a chance on him. Unless the Sox have plans to re-sign him, there's no reason not to take a lowball offer if somebody makes one.
Most likely the claiming team will either just agree to pay his full remaining salary on a straight waiver claim, or ask the Sox to eat 90% of his remaining salary in return for a minor leaguer that will have very little chance of every making it past AA.
I would like to point out the relative uselessness of this graph. It is specifically tracking movement from the bottom 20% to the top 20%. I'd be much more interested in seeing a graph tracking the movement from the bottom 20% to the other three quintiles. I'd rather be first in that graph than this one.
If Hahn doesn't get a Garza package or better for Peavy, he shouldn't make the deal, and he should tell those teams that are coming up short with their offers that he's going to text them a photo of Peavy every time their #5 starter is out there getting shelled in August and September.
Everybody would love to see Paulie retire in a Sox uniform, but if by some miracle there's a team that would actually give up something valuable for him, the Sox would be stupid not to do it, though right now that seems incredibly unlikely.
