Chicago @ Tampa Bay - ALDS Game 1
QUOTE (Buehrle>Wood @ Oct 2, 2008 -> 02:35 PM) At least it wouldn't be because of a lack of balls. Well I'm sure everyone would be saying that if he was pitching. Typical Soxtalk rule.

QUOTE (fathom @ Oct 2, 2008 -> 02:35 PM) I predict Javy for Troy Glaus trade this offseason, with Joe Crede signing with the Cardinals. Javy and Fields for Beltre and Miguel Batista.

QUOTE (PlunketChris @ Oct 2, 2008 -> 02:34 PM) Or CC Sabathia /green(?) Unless he'll take 100M on a 3 year deal, there's no way JR touches him. Besides I look forward to the Yanks signing him on a 7 year deal, and then hopefully he turns into the next Carl Pavano.

QUOTE (SoCalSouthSider59 @ Oct 2, 2008 -> 02:32 PM) Why is a 16 game loser even starting this game?????? C'mon Paulie???? Because unfortunately the Sox don't have a lot of other options. I wouldn't have thrown a rookie who's only thrown a couple of good games out of 7 or 8, into the frying pan for game 1.

QUOTE (Jordan4life @ Oct 2, 2008 -> 02:32 PM) God damn I miss Jose Contreras right now. Jose would have given up 8ER by now. KW needs to go after good young pitching come the off-season.

Chicago @ Tampa Bay - ALDS Game 1
QUOTE (StrangeSox @ Oct 2, 2008 -> 02:31 PM) According to Stone and Farmer, it was a rolling belt-high curve ball. Not exactly a difficult pitch to handle. He shouln't be throwing curveballs, as when he throws a lot of them, he gets hit hard most of the time IIRC.

QUOTE (southsideirish71 @ Oct 2, 2008 -> 02:30 PM) I am sure on the Pirates, he wins Cy Young. Time to get Richard up. Their lineup is filled with lefties. Let's offer him to Pittsburgh then. My guess is he's pitching somewhere in the NL next season.

QUOTE (fathom @ Oct 2, 2008 -> 02:29 PM) We're seeing Javy's last start ever in a White Sox jersey at least. Wouldn't surprise me if the Mets went after him actually. Minaya always liked him, and they need pitching.

Javy's gone completely downhill since this time last season. And to think, he was probably our best pitcher also.

QUOTE (whitesoxfan101 @ Oct 2, 2008 -> 02:24 PM) Javy truly is an embarrassment to his profession. We should have started Richard today. Well I wouldn't go that far. But I think he'll be shopped around come the off-season FWIW.

Chicago @ Tampa Bay - ALDS Game 1
Ohh boy. C'mon Javy stick with it here.

Chicago @ Tampa Bay - ALDS Game 1
Javy's thrown 66% of his pitches for strikes so far. He needs to keep that type of percentage up if he wants to do well. 4K's so far thru 2 innings indicates he's got decent stuff going so far.

Twins have "internal discussions" about Cabrera and Crede
QUOTE (caulfield12 @ Oct 2, 2008 -> 11:27 AM) History has shown it's not wise to offer that kind of money to a 2B. To a SS, CFer or starting pitcher (a VERY select few), sure. The White Sox did a good job plugging in Iguchi at 2B in 05 and 06, and found a gem in Ramirez. I don't want a Furcal/Jones type of contract for a non-franchise player. It would be one thing if he was 27-29, but he's not. That was the one thing I liked about the Swisher deal, getting the average age of this team down, and numbers financially made more sense. Of course, that doesn't mean I want Chris Getz to be the starter either, but I think there's better options out there than paying a Figgins or Hudson player $30 million plus. Speed is always (or should be) less expensive to acquire than power. Simple, but true, fundamental baseball adage. You have to look at what the Sox's needs are though and the players out there on the market. We'll have the contracts of Crede, Uribe and OC coming off the books, and JC's contract maybe covered by insurance. That's potential $25M in contracts the Sox won't have to pay. Uribe will be back, he's played himself back into a role, but only as a utility man IMHO. That's $3M or so. I'd like to sign another good bullpen guy, another lefty if possible or someone like Doug Brocail who had a good season before being overworked. That's another 3M or so. Which guys are out there via FA that the Sox could go after to fill their CF hole, or do they give Swisher another opportunity there. Why not offer Swisher and Fields to Seattle for Beltre for example, to try and fill your hole at 3B? The Sox take on another $6M or so in that deal, leaving another 10-15M potentially to spend, if not more, considering payroll has increased each season for the last 5-6. So unless the Sox traded for a big name CF, they'd have to sign a 2B or SS IMHO. Rafael Furcal is basically the only guy I could really justify the Sox going after as a SS, considering his OBP / defensive skills, but the Dodgers want to re-sign him and he's very injury prone. Hence why I think going after Hudson on a 2 year 25M deal or so and moving Alexei Ramirez to SS is a better option. They'd still need a CF, but they could offer prospects to Pittsburgh for someone like Nate McLouth for instance. Either way, the Sox need to strengthen up the middle and at 3B, as they're pretty much set elsewhere. KW's got a real opportunity to consolidate the gains the Sox have made (hence why I'd like to see him go after some more young pitching if possible as well, because with Floyd and Danks he's got a good recent track record on that front).

Twins have "internal discussions" about Cabrera and Crede
QUOTE (caulfield12 @ Oct 2, 2008 -> 09:41 AM) You will be waiting until at least mid-season 2010 for something like that to happen. But it's nice to have something to look forward to in the future...someone who at least on paper looks like he could be an All-Star caliber player. I won't get too excited yet, though. Too many disappointments in the past. Hence why I'd offer an Andruw Jones type of contract to Hudson come the off-season.

Twins have "internal discussions" about Cabrera and Crede
Crede playing on that turf, wouldn't be a good fit for him at all IMHO. Still it'd be pretty sad to see him end up in a Twins uniform. OC is the more interesting one, I think he'll be after another 4 year deal in the off-season. If Furcal leaves the Dodgers, wouldn't surprise me to see OC end up there maybe. Either way, I'd take those 2 out, bring in Beltre and Hudson, and I'll be one very happy man.

Ken Griffey Jr.
This is something I'd like to see for the playoffs. Griffey moves up to the #2 spot to replace Wise in the lineup, and Swisher hits below A.J in the #8 hole. Griffey has a .260/.347/.405 line since joining the White Sox, so he's got a pretty decent OBP, and only a 25/17 K/BB ratio. I think he would do a solid job there, and offer a bit more balance to the lineup. Do people think this would be the best option if Wise was moved out of the lineup? I'd much prefer Griffey hitting 2nd than say Brian Anderson.

Starting Outfield
I voted Swisher, but the Sox would then need a #2 hitter to move up in the lineup. And I don't mind Swisher in that role, but he does K a lot. I actually wouldn't mind seeing Griffey hit 2nd in the lineup FWIW.

The OFFICIAL "I'm sorry" thread
QUOTE (Tony82087 @ Oct 1, 2008 -> 12:14 PM) A few of us talked about it a few weeks ago. I really didn't like the trade at the time, and still have some problems with it, but we said if the Sox make the playoffs, it has to considered a good trade. Garland would have been the 5th starter this year, and might not even get a start in the post season(Even with his rep, I still start 2008 Vazquez over 2008 Garland). Cabrera was huge for this club down the stretch. The move payed off, so far. Garland may not even pitch for the Angels in the playoffs IIRC. He won't be back next season, but OC did bring an "edge" this season, and he did out-perform the other big acquisition at the time in Swisher. As I said last week, Sox fans shouldn't be disappointed if they don't make the playoffs, because compared to where we were a year ago, this team has improved a long way. And we've made the playoffs now, so yes, you can call it a successful season. But I still think there is definitely room for improvement in the off-season. I'd like to see Hudson brought in at 2B, and to acquire Beltre for 3B giving up Fields in a deal (would Seattle do Swisher and Fields for Beltre I actually wonder). FWIW, Beltre had an .862 OPS away from Safeco, and I think he would hit over 30HR's for us at the Cell. I'd like to see another quality lefty brought into the pen, as I have questions over Logan over the long - term. Don't know if Ron Mahay is a FA or not, but someone like that who can do a job for you in the 6th or 7th inning with an ERA around 3 would be ideal. And if KW is working the trade market, I think he should try to go after these 2 type of players; 1 - A young CF who can step in from next season. Not sure who that is, but I would actually offer say a Vazquez around, and see if you can get that type of player. 2 - A young pitcher in the Danks or Floyd mould. Poreda may be ready possibly at some point next season, but if the Sox see a young pitcher they like, and they've obviously had major success recently with Gavin and John, go after that guy again.
