  1. QUOTE(AirScott @ Sep 28, 2005 -> 02:43 PM) not as much for Pods, his OPS is considered terrible, but add the SBs to it and it'd be respectable. It makes the difference though for a comparison between say Carl Crawford and Scott Podsednik.
  2. QUOTE(SoxFan1 @ Sep 28, 2005 -> 02:41 PM) Never said it wasn't an important stat. Stat's are overrated in baseball and I have said this many times and I hate to sound like Hawk but it's about what he does for the team that doesnt get recorded as a stat. What does Pods do that's awfully special then if it doesn't show up on the stats?
  3. QUOTE(nitetrain8601 @ Sep 28, 2005 -> 02:38 PM) Look at his numbers with RISP. His OPS is way low. His OBP isn't that of a great leadoff hitter. He doesn't have many triples for a guy with tremendous speed. His defense isn't good. He's a nice player and an asset. This team, however, doesn't need assets, it needs guys they can rely on. In the first half, Pods was doing his job. After that he went to s***. Like I've said before, the most worthless .300 hitter. Scott Podsednik OBP in 2005 - .353 Willie Harris OBP in 2004 - .343 Pods lack of power, BA/RISP, OPS in a corner position, where power is VITAL, doesn't make up for his stolen base ability.
  4. QUOTE(SoxFan1 @ Sep 28, 2005 -> 02:35 PM) Sinc when are we basing someones abilities by his OPS and his Hr's? You don't think OPS is an important stat?
  5. QUOTE(Rowand44 @ Sep 28, 2005 -> 02:29 PM) This team hits homeruns though with Pods in left so it's not like we're lacking power, that argument that your lf must hit for power just doesnt work for me, who cares where the power is being provided from. Yeah but it could be more dangerous if you add another guy like Kevin Mench in there in a run producing spot who can hit better with RISP. The problem is getting anbother leadoff hitter, and if we don't get Rafael Furcal (which I doubt we will), Pods is here to stay.
  6. QUOTE(SoxFan1 @ Sep 28, 2005 -> 02:28 PM) His offense makes up for his "lack of defense." And I am sure that he is not the only corner outfielder in the MLB that doesnt have power. GMAB. You want to upgrade? Getting rid of Pods is a downgrade unless you get a cant-miss offer for him. His offense? He is terrible with runners in scoring posittion. Without his legs his useless. How many triples does he have this season for a guy with his so called speed? How many corner OF's in the MLB have 0 HR's? And an OPS higher than .705?
  7. QUOTE(SoxFan1 @ Sep 28, 2005 -> 02:25 PM) No, I'm just saying that the fact that you even considered putting those 2 on the list is just....horrible. But if washed up NL players is what the Sox are looking for, go for it. Why? Piazza ain't going to be a catcher anymore. He could be had for about $3M as a DH for a team like the Angels where he'd move from a pitcher's stadium to a hitter's one. He's still hittting about .260 with 20 HR. Burnitz has the same production, but he can still play the OF. Just saying, there's no magic solution out there for teams looking for a DH in this FA market.
  8. QUOTE(SoxFan1 @ Sep 28, 2005 -> 02:22 PM) Oh, I agree with you there 100% but getting rid of Pods, who is cheap, is plain retarted to me. If we could package Aaron, El Duque, and Marte to a team willing to give us a good offensive player...do it. You don't keep Pods just because he's cheap. He's not good enough to play CF defensively, yet he doesn't hit for enough power in a corner position in an offense that desperately need upgrades. I can tell you right now, there'd be about a 70-30 ratio for Sox fans in favor of trading Pods before Rowand.
  9. QUOTE(SoxFan1 @ Sep 28, 2005 -> 02:20 PM) Any other options you see on the FA market there Einstein?
  10. QUOTE(fathom @ Sep 28, 2005 -> 02:06 PM) Yeah, for some reason like 3 months ago, I just had a feeling that he would be brought in next season. This was when he was in the Tigers minor leagues, and you'd have to hink he'd be available this offseason. He's hit over .300 with about 13HR since he was brought back up right? I don't like Walker's chances of getting him to use that new swing he's got consistently though. But yeah he definitely be an option, if they decide to stay with Chris Shelton.
  11. QUOTE(YahtzeeSox @ Sep 28, 2005 -> 02:02 PM) Can't we go to arbitration with AJ and Jonny? I think I remember hearing about this but I'm not sure, I know Jonny can but AJ I'm not sure. If so, they shouldn't be getting raises that will break the bank. As for Konerko + Helton... well that's pretty farfetched but that's something I could die for. Them platooning at 1B and DH is ideal as all hell but then I'd have to concede the money thing. That's a lot of money. I'd take Helton over Kong any day though. JG is most likely going to get locked up to a 3 year deal at least. KW showed last off-season with Rowand and Uribe he's not afraid to lock up guys for a few years in their arbitration phase. A.J I assume the same thing is going to happen, since we don't have a C that could replace him.
  12. QUOTE(Buehrle>Wood @ Sep 28, 2005 -> 01:42 PM) No. Assuming we don't get to the World Series, yet another payroll increase is unlikely. We don't need to spend the 11-12 mill on Paul Konerko. Give me someone who can hit the 3 hole please. Ok who hits in the #4 spot then? That's 40HR and 100RBI's your losing of production right there. Who else on the Sox or in the FA market is going to replace that? And I'm getting sick of this payroll bashing. The fact is, the payroll has increased for the last 5 years in a row at least. With a record # of Attendance for a while, there's no way, it ain't gonna get increased.
  13. QUOTE(fathom @ Sep 28, 2005 -> 01:57 PM) Durazo will go to a moneyball type of team that values walks. The Sox are about as far from that type of franchise as you can get. I would love to get Nomar, as I think he has the type of line drive swing we've been missing. However, he's on the record as saying he'll only sign on somewhere as a SS. And whoever said he'll get the minimum is quite wrong...he'll get somewhere between 6 and 8 million again. I don't know if Nomar's going to get a starting SS job for that type of money. Personally I think he's headed to LA to take over as their 3B for Jose Valentin. And on Durazo, well the Sox need to change their philosophy then, and I know everyone who bashes their offense is probably going to agree on that. Right now if I was to predict a team, I'll say maybe Toronto, if they can find a taker for Eric Hinske.
  14. QUOTE(fathom @ Sep 28, 2005 -> 01:51 PM) The Rockies have said they won't pick up any of Helton's contract. If you take on his contract, you can say goodbye to Garland and AJP, and hello to Duque and Ben Davis. Yeah with the raises the guys like those two are going to get, if you re-sign Konerko, we don't have the payroll room to bring in a guy like Helton. That's why signing a guy like Durazo to small contract with incentives has a much higher likelihood of happening.
  15. I really think Ozzie's gonna jump ship to Florida this off-season, when they fire McKeon (which is pretty much a lock to happen now).
  16. QUOTE(fathom @ Sep 28, 2005 -> 01:39 PM) How about Soriano instead then? All I know is that the Sox need another dangerous hitter that can carry the team himself. Right now, we have too many role players. He could be a possibility but he'd want to play 2B, and we're not moving Iguchi (even though I know you've suggested him in a deal to Seattle to get a guy like Beltre). Now if you could get him to play CF, it could maybe happen, but I'd doubt he'd DH for us.
  17. QUOTE(fathom @ Sep 28, 2005 -> 01:38 PM) ADAM DUNN! Now here's the all important argument. What's more important. Dunn's higher OBP and power numbers, or a guy like Helton's higher BA?
  18. QUOTE(Rowand44 @ Sep 28, 2005 -> 01:35 PM) No offense nite but it'd take a s***load more then that to trade for tex, to be honest, he ain't going anywhere for a long long time. Yeah all these "I want Tex" posts I've seen in the last week is all moot because Scott Bora$$ is his agent, and Texas may just deal him for that reason alone.
  19. QUOTE(nitetrain8601 @ Sep 28, 2005 -> 01:34 PM) I'd take Nomar at least as a DH. I don't know if I want Durazo. I would try to trade for Texieria(trade Young, Rogowski, and a Lumsden; give or take a little). I would also look at Jim Thome for DH. He absolutely would rake at the Cell. Yes, he's been injured this year, but the only guys worth going for in the offseaon this year IMHO are guys who have injury concerns. Durazo's a risk. But if you could get him for say $1 or 2M for 1 year with incentives, he could rake at the Cell too. Remember he had a +.900 OPS in Oakland in 2003. Thome's an option I've put forward as well, but Philly would have to pay at least half of his deal. You wouldn't have to give up as much for him as Helton though because of his back, unless they decide to trade Ryan Howard instead.........
  20. QUOTE(Rowand44 @ Sep 28, 2005 -> 01:31 PM) Don't you think your boy in zona could be had for aaron and marte? I'd be willing to bet that Anderson can atleast put up the same type of numbers Aaron has this season in center. Yep. I would deal for Chad Tracy a Million Times in a row before I'd deal for Todd Helton right now. I don't think Arizona would take Rowand, they're stocked in the OF and have Shawn Green there at the moment. Now a 3 way deal, with Rowand going to a team like the Yankees in CF could be a possibility. Arizona needs young pitching in a big way though. A guy like Daniel Haigwood who's an Arizona Native could be attractive to them.
  21. QUOTE(YahtzeeSox @ Sep 28, 2005 -> 01:25 PM) You said it yourself, the contract. I find it hard to believe they wouldn't make or attempt to make a deal especially since the Great Prospect Dealer Kenny Williams would probably make them an amazing offer. Offer up some of our pitching. Garland, Garcia, McCarthy, Contreras? He's still the main marketable guy in Colorado. They need somebody to help them put butts in seats, and they don't have an option at 1B to replace him. And would I deal one of those 4 pitching guys for him? No. It's easier to find a good bat than to find good pitching. A guy like Casey Rogowski who's hit over .300 down at B-Ham could be an option as well.
  22. QUOTE(YahtzeeSox @ Sep 28, 2005 -> 01:22 PM) Any better suggestions? Furcal? Giles? Any FA's out there look good? No. We need a .300 hitter. That's all there is to it. f*** power. We have plenty of it. Helton's hitting f***in' .323, that's beautiful and what we need. A consistent hitter. Power will come, but we need consistency. Nomar Garciaparra. Erubiel Durazo. Reggie Sanders. Mike Piazza. Daryle Ward. Jacque Jones. Preston Wilson. Jeromy Burnitz. Most likely if it's anyone to DH from FA it's gonna be one of these guys. The cost for Helton is gonna be too great.
  23. For all the lineups that have Giles, Konerko AND Furcal in it, dream on. We'll be lucky to have 1 one of those guys in our team next season.
  24. QUOTE(YahtzeeSox @ Sep 28, 2005 -> 01:18 PM) Todd f***ing Helton. Make this trade, we need a superstar. He's the man. The Rockies should be willing to listen to deals. Colorado have repeatedly said they won't deal him, and if they will, he has a lot of $$ on his deal, plus they'll want some real good prospects. And as Rowand just said about the power numbers at Coors.
