Viz is signed for more than the minimum, plus KW traded for him. He stays.

Red's Closer Released..Do the Sox pick him up?
DBAHO replied to Cubs Suck23's topic in Pale Hose Talk
QUOTE(AddisonStSox @ May 25, 2005 -> 12:25 AM) Correct me if I'm wrong (and I shouldn't be), the Reds have 10 days to trade, release or outright him to the Minors. Now, with Levine's reports of a Flubs trade for a left-handed out fielder and a RP on the horizon, I think you are going to see the Cubs land both Adam Dunn and Danny Graves...just something to keep an eye on. It would have to be a hell of a package for the Reds to give up Dunn. They could quite easily get a guy like Pena or Kearns for much, much less. -

QUOTE(Jabroni @ May 25, 2005 -> 12:19 AM) Just an FYI -- Danny Baez has 3 blown saves in 7 save opportunites. He also has a 4-0 record and a 2.70 ERA. Splits of .217/.321/.304. -
What third baseman's out there are FA's this off-season. A stopgap guy could be needed until Josh Fields is ready the way Crede has been going lately, but lets hope he can turn it around, and hit like he did in April.

QUOTE(BobDylan @ May 24, 2005 -> 02:18 PM) Foulke has a 7.29 ERA. Would you pass on him too? But if he was pitching in the NL, he'd be SO much better right? :rolly -
Damnit. I wanted Flip Saunders, and I thought in the last week we had a real good shot at getting him. Very glad, Brian Hill gets another chance though.

QUOTE(Jabroni @ May 24, 2005 -> 12:13 AM) Well, if one sportswriter is wrong I don't see why there's a problem with pointing out when others are wrong as well. It depends on the magnitude and how many times they are, in Kotex Boy's case, well it'd be the umpteenth time.

QUOTE(Jabroni @ May 23, 2005 -> 11:52 PM) The whole point of this thread is to show that the Sox still do have homerun power. Before the season, most of the sportswriters wrote about the "Sox loss of power" and predicted that we wouldn't be able to hit many homers after losing Magg$, Lee, and Valenstache. Obviously, they were wrong. We all knew that. There's really no great need to be repeating that then.

QUOTE(rangercal @ May 23, 2005 -> 11:43 PM) O'Briens going to threaten someone's life? Really though, I agree with you. But, just maybe a change of scenery may help. He will always be a choker. Not a trait you want in your kicker This will be the 7th team in his career he's been on. Now I know kicker's do move around a long unless your name is Adam Vinateri or David Akers, but that should prove what type of a kicker he is.

QUOTE(Jabroni @ May 23, 2005 -> 11:46 PM) I remember many sportswriters talking about how the loss of Magg$, Lee and Valenstache would affect our ability to hit the longball. Our team OBP is still crappy. We need Frank back. But that was more before the season. Once the season actually started and the Sox started winning games, experts predicted in wouldn't last because they weren't playing smallball and were still relying on the homer.
-
QUOTE(Steff @ May 23, 2005 -> 11:45 PM) He didn't have to explain anything. And quite honestly.. I don't feel he did. Just more yelling and cursing. I hope he's got a swear jar.
-
I haven't seen anybody disputing our ability to hit the home run since the season began, it's been more the OBP. What's that stat now compared to other teams?
-
QUOTE(Jabroni @ May 23, 2005 -> 11:19 PM) Can't be any worse than what Edinger's sorry ass did last season. Like Brien choking in the playoffs? Lets use the Jose Mesa mentality here.

Happy B-Day guys!!!

QUOTE(Pastime @ May 23, 2005 -> 06:37 PM) Uribe and Crede would be GREAT bench players for a top-notch team, but they're not starters, IMO. And we are now a top-notch team. Read into that what you will. We could deal with either of them coming off the bench, but having both of them in the starting lineup with their non-selective, hacking bats and POOR avg w/RISP is a recipe for disaster. Even with the hot start that the Sox have had, I would embrace and applaud an upgrade at either position, if not both. The 7th inning in yesterday's game was their weaknesses wrapped up in a nice little microcosm. Who out there right now could we trade for who would be an uprgrade over Juan Uribe? We didn't re-sign him on a 3 year deal worth about $10 million so he could be a bench player. Yes he's still a very hot and cold player, and his splits this season are really confusing. Last year he was so good at home, and so bad away. Now look at this; HOME - .164/.197/.309 AWAY - .307/.341/.467 Generally from what I can see with him, the more he walks, the better he hits. So patience is still the key for him. Hitting very well against lefties, but needs to pick it up against righties.

QUOTE(Jordan4life_2005 @ May 23, 2005 -> 05:42 PM) I'm fine with Hermanson. Is he as good as Lidge or Wagner? No. But the difference certainly is not worth having to give up atleast 2 of Mcarthy and Anderson or Sweeney. As far as another bat goes? We've got to wait and see how Frank does. If he does struggle, I have faith that Kenny will do something. I personally believe Frank will be absolutely fine when he gets back. My thoughts exactly.

QUOTE(soxfan420 @ May 23, 2005 -> 04:35 PM) but borchard atleast did somethings right, he hit the ball real far and showed power potentiol(i know hes not a young buck anymore but he could still turn it on) viz does one thing right and thats walk batters and give up homers. he reminds me of jackson and rick white. It hasn't even been 2 months of the season, and you've already made your mind up about Vizcaino. He's a flyball pitcher, who gave up a routine fly ball today, that got caught in the wind for a homer. Right now his lefty splits (which was the main reason we got him) suck. But last season, they were some of the best in the LEAGUE for a righty. He's not going to be this bad, all season long. One thing on him though, he may have a bit of a dead arm. Last year, pre All - Star 2.88 ERA in 40.2 IP, post all - star 4.88 ERA in 31.1 IP. Just something to consider. Borch can hit the ball hard. Yeah, about once in every 20 AB's. .188 AVG in Charlotte this season with a 53/12 K/BB ratio says he won't make it, at least not with us.
-
According to Ken Rosenthal, it begs the question. Who would you prefer? Billy Wagner or Brad Lidge? And he thinks we could be in the market for a DH if Frank doesn't hit;
-
Damn, didn't see this coming at all, especially after he was the GM for only 1 season. Well I guess this means there's a better chance that Steve Francis could get dealt now, although I hope this doesn't impact our chances of getting Flip Saunders;
-
QUOTE(soxfan420 @ May 23, 2005 -> 04:28 PM) i never talk garbage about player ever unless i see nothing in them, i never complained about crede, garland or borchard, i just really cant stand him and rick white. But unlike Borchard, Vizcaino has at least done something good at the major league level.
-
Our starting pitching depth in the minors is looking real, real good right now. B-Mac has joined the big club, Tracey is doing his thing in B-Ham, and Malone seems to be well on the way back. Tyler Lumsden is still to come back, Wes Whisler just got back from an injury, Ray Liotta has been great so far, and Gio was absolutely dominating early this season and we'll see him with the Warthogs real soon.
-
Brien will choke. Plus his success rate from outside 40 will be under 25%.

QUOTE(Chisoxfn @ May 23, 2005 -> 02:19 PM) Is Mient signed long term by the Mets? I know he is struggling right now but maybe I'm assuming wrong but I'm guessing he didn't ink a long term deal in New York so he'll be a FA as well. Mient isn't that bad of a hitter and I'd like him more than JT Snow (well possibly). I hate JT Snow though and it has nothing to do with his playing days. He's just an asshole or at least was back when he was in Anaheim. There's something about Mient's contract, it was a 2 year deal, but I think the Mets may have a 3rd year option possibly. Qwerty or someone will probably post the details of it if they wish.

QUOTE(Kalapse @ May 23, 2005 -> 12:05 PM) Lyle Overbay is not a stop gap firstbaseman, he is a franchise player. Oh yeah, the Brewers do not want any position players they want pitching. Unless they could trade Geoff Jenkins while they're at it, but that's very unlikely. Either way, that ballclub is in a very good position for the next 2 to 3 years, if ownership keeps allowing payroll to increase.
-
Overbay is certainly an option, although his monster season so this far this year has his value pretty sky - high. The Sox need to decide whether to trade for a guy like Overbay and really give up a lot, sign a guy like Snow or Durazo, or trade a guy like Contreras for someone like Adrian Gonzalez plus other prospects possibly, which is a scenario that has been tossed up here before.
