  1. As a newcomer to the game, I don't always get what particular phrases mean. Whilst I'm approaching this thread from the perspective of a novice, it might also be useful as a thread where veteran fans can ask about and discuss technical aspects of the game. (I wasn't sure whether to put this in Pale Hose Talk or The Diamond Club). Hopefully I won't be too irritating for you all with my beginner's line in questioning. So, yesterday, after a long break, I once more opened Bernard A. Weisberger's excellent 'When Chicago Ruled Baseball'. In it, at one point, he makes a comment regarding the 'dead-ball era'. What did the 'dead-ball era entail, as opposed to whatever era it is that we are in now?
  2. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Jan 8, 2013 -> 02:49 PM) Chuck Garfien ‏@ChuckGarfien White Sox pitchers and catchers report in 36 days. Nice. Really looking forward to having some baseball to watch again.
  3. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Jan 8, 2013 -> 06:30 PM) Anyone interested in buying a used Shuttle launch pad? Only used about 125 times. http://blog.al.com/huntsville-times-busine...tle_launch.html That's a mad coincidence. I was just saying to my missus there earlier, when we were having our dinner, that I felt our back garden lacked a "certain something".
  4. QUOTE (Jake @ Jan 8, 2013 -> 03:45 PM) Also, he and the rest of that part of my family hail from Cappamore, Ireland! Apparently that is in the general vicinity of Limerick, though it appears to be a really small and rather isolated community from Google Maps. Interesting. When you say "hail from", was he actually born there himself or just that the family's origins were there. Yeah, it's near Limerick alright. A small enough spot, as you say. Amazing it never came up in conversation all these years. You must've been absolutely buzzing when you found out.
  5. QUOTE (Jake @ Jan 8, 2013 -> 04:47 AM) Just found out that my great-great uncle, Clarence (Billy, Clare) Finucane played with the White Sox during their ST in Pasadena in 1938. He also played for a few minor league affiliates. We have some pictures at home of him wearing the big league club's uni and stuff at home. Real cool and I can't believe I didn't know it, proud to be a Sox fan That's a very cool thing to find out.
  6. QUOTE (LittleHurt05 @ Jan 6, 2013 -> 01:03 PM) Cheers my friend. She was born on Friday and is sleeping right next to me at the hospital right now. Life is good. Great news mate. Congratulations to youself, your good lady, and the little one.

  10. Happy new year to you all from Ireland. We're an hour and a half into 2013... all going well so far!!!! And, Littlehurt, best of luck with the little one.
  11. Getting stuck into a few Guinnesses now. My sister, her husband and another couple of friends are coming over shortly and we're going to have a Belarussian style New Year celebration... Into the trenches with bottles of vodka (well, all except my pregnant wife and sister) and a feast of food. By the time you shower get to bringing in 2013, I'll probably be tucked up in my bed Enjoy, whatever you all get up to.
  12. Christmas Eve - preparations all done. Meeting my Da for lunch in town, then back out to the local for pints, and home for more grub and gargle. Up early tomorrow for the full day of festivities. I love it. Best wishes to you all on Soxtalk. It's been a pleasure to be on the board since the summer and I look forward to 2013 and sharing the fortunes of the Sox on here. Be safe and be merry
  13. QUOTE (ChiSox_Sonix @ Dec 20, 2012 -> 01:48 PM) Yeah, Milan-Barca, Man U - Madrid and Valencia-PSG should be fun Yes. Really looking forward to some good games. Actually, I don't think there's a single bad fixture in there: Round of 16 Matches 1. Galatasaray A.S. (TUR) - FC Schalke 04 (GER) 2. Celtic FC (SCO) - Juventus (ITA) 3. Arsenal FC (ENG) - FC Bayern München (GER) 4. FC Shakhtar Donetsk (UKR) - Borussia Dortmund (GER) 5. AC Milan (ITA) - FC Barcelona (ESP) 6. Real Madrid CF (ESP) - Manchester United FC (ENG) 7. Valencia CF (ESP) - Paris Saint-Germain (FRA) 8. FC Porto (POR) - Málaga CF (ESP) Galatasaray - Schalke should be tasty enough, I reckon.
  14. Celtic got Juventus in the last 16 of the Champions League. Tough enough draw but, at this stage, whoever we got was going to be a big challenge. Some cracking match-ups in this round, actually.
  15. Terrible, terrible news. Shocking stuff altogether.
  16. Seems that Celtic manager, Neil Lennon, has confirmed the Club's interest in pursuing Juan Agudelo Report in here!
