QUOTE (JoeCoolMan24 @ Dec 12, 2012 -> 08:09 PM) Talked to the prof after class. He said he is going to change how the extra credit was input, will change how our first 3 assignments were weighted (out of 100 instead out of only 10), and the curve looks to be about 15%. He also said I actually have a 63% in the class, before he adds participation points. So I may actually end up with like an 85% in the class. LOL. What an awful, awful grading system he does. Good to hear it seems like it will work out well for you. He sounds like a terrible fecking @rsehole, though!

QUOTE (Tex @ Dec 12, 2012 -> 06:23 PM) So why did you click? Because I'm an impulsive half-wit. That, and to see if it delivered on its promise of nothingness. It failed miserably.

All the best for your birthday. Keep posting a stormer!

QUOTE (bmags @ Dec 10, 2012 -> 06:36 PM) I checked out It's a Wonderful Life at the Logan yesterday for a matinee. I thought I had seen that movie like 25 times, but it turns out I had never watched the first half. It's a lot funnier in the first half. Saw it in full for the first time last year.

QUOTE (Jake @ Dec 10, 2012 -> 03:45 AM) What's good around you? My knowledge of the UK film scene is pretty minimal, but I'm in the very, very early stages of thinking about graduate school there. All the good work in my Spanish Cinema specialty is being done in British Universities. Forgive me for making Ireland and GB sound interchangeable, too You cut me deep, Jake. You cut me deep. I'm not too well up on decent films on the Irish and British film scene at the moment. There was 'Hunger' (Christ, I had to google to see when that was and it was 2008. Jesus!) that got a tremendous reception. Strangely, as a subject matter close to my heart, I haven't seen it yet. But it really does come highly recommended, notwithstanding your comment about not liking prison based films. I'm drawing a bit of a blank at the moment - I wouldn't be any sort of a flim buff at all - I know there's lots of great British and Irish films, but I'm a little bit slow today!!! I might have to come back to this. Take 'Hunger' as my starting offer. Another old one, did you see Gangster No. 1? Decent London gangster film from a decade or so ago. Sorry, my brain is utter mush today. Just found this blog, if it's of any interest to you: 5 Irish Films You Must See This Year... P.S. If you're going to study in Britain (any worthwhile courses in Ireland?), or even Europe, I'm now baptising you as a Celtic fan. A session in Glasgow beckons, methinks!

This was my answer to a similar question when I first joined the forum back in the summer: QUOTE (Joxer_Daly @ Jul 10, 2012 -> 01:27 PM) Good question. Why does an Irish guy that has only followed baseball for a few months and has never even been to the States develop an allegiance to the Sox? As Quinarvy hits on above, I was curious if there were any MLB teams with any Irish connections over the years. A pal of mine that lived in Chicago for a few years directed me towards the White Sox (I don't know too much about the extent of this connection, but intend to explore the earlier history of the team as part of my overall Soxification!!!). He also portrayed our city rivals as yuppies with delusions of grandeur, so that edged my allegiance ever-closer to the Southsiders. Surprisingly, this guy is Sox fan himself! Also, these points aside, even before developing my interest in baseball, the name Chicago White Sox would've carried some sort of iconic or romantic resonance to my mind - possibly for as simple a reason as the featuring of the character of Shoeless Joe Jackson in Field of Dreams, for example - without quite knowing why. So, it's a random combination of (i) some sort of Irish connection, (ii) my pal being a fan, (iii) us being the good guys with our city rivals being up themselves, and (iv) some prior positive identification with the name.

This thread has jumped far too far since my last offering for me to be able to make any worthwhile contribution. But from the few posts I've read, I just have three things to say: 1. Outside of Christmas, birthdays, and (at an absolute stretch and nothing too excessive) Valentine's... No gifts. 2. What the f@ck is Sweetest Day??? 3. I see a lot of talk about communication. Communication is central to keeping a relationship together. But, (and I'm addressing this specifically to you, Reddy) at a time when there's a split on, there can be such a thing as too much communication. As in, you don't see each other for a couple of weeks and then that's it. You start to get back together again. In my opinion (and it is only my stupid opinion), that is nowhere near enough the amount of time required to work through all the buried emotional crap that led to the problems in the first place. If you get back too soon, it'll just be the same thing on repeat down the line. At one stage, I split up with my now wife. It took a couple of months for me to work through my own bullsh@t that had led me to do that in the first place. But, the best thing is, it was another couple of months before she would even entertain meeting me for a coffee (just a coffee). That's where you need to get your head at, as much as you want to get it all back hunky-dory. Remember, that she's the one that gave you the heave-ho. Don't be like a dog running back with your tongue out. In the long run she won't appreciate it. Anyway, all I say is only advice. Your welcome to come back in thirty years time and call me a dick, everyone has their own approach. There is no guaranteed success formula. If only you'd pumped that fat bird.

QUOTE (caulfield12 @ Dec 10, 2012 -> 12:41 AM) A Prophet was great, I just watched that one recently. It's a feckin' belter of a film. The anticipatory tension in THAT scene easily surpasses that of the Solozzo/McCluskey killings in The Godfather, and other famously tense scenes to boot!!! And the fella that plays the Corsican does a great job too.

Film quote of the year, 2012, nominations... Simple, succinct: "Argof@ckyourself!"

QUOTE (caulfield12 @ Dec 10, 2012 -> 12:41 AM) A Prophet was great, I just watched that one recently. Rust and Bone is getting some curious reviews, one of the two main EW.com reviewers put it on their Worst 5 movies of the year list, but many really like it. The Kid With a Bike is another one that comes to mind right away. Has anyone else seen that? Goodbye, Lenin! and A Very Long Engagement, bringing back some memories there. Then there's Amelie, a favorite for lots of us older folks, or Chocolat with Depp and Binoche. Living in China, I guess I've seen about 80-90% of the famous Chinese/Taiwanese films over the last decade...if there's any you are interested in hearing a review of, would be glad to provide it. And quite a few Thai films as well. Two of my favorite Thai movies are "Hello, Stranger" and "BTS Traffic Love Story" (loosely translated). And Dear Galileo with Ray McDonald isn't bad if you prefer travel movies... Amelie is a brilliant film. I probably should have put that in also. Was Chocolat not in English, though? Outside of the Crouching Tiger types, I haven't seen a wild lot of Chinese films. Any recommendations?

QUOTE (Brian @ Dec 10, 2012 -> 12:20 AM) I'd be interested in why people didnt like Casino Royale, cuz I thought it was great. Yeah, I thought 'Casino Royale' was great aswell. I always watch it when it comes on the TV too. The other one was brutal, fair enough.

QUOTE (Jake @ Dec 9, 2012 -> 09:38 PM) I'm concluding/continuing some pretty intensive foreign film study, so hit me up if you're interested in some good stuff from other countries. FWIW, Hulu seems to be the king of all-time great foreign films via their "Criterion Collection." What's high up on your radar? Can be recent releases or older. At the moment my favourite foreign language films over the years would be (in no particular order): Goodbye Lenin A Very Long Engagement 9th Company A Prophet The Counterfeiters La Haine 11'09''01 - September 11 (Not so much a film, as eleven short films, by different directors, of eleven minutes and nine seconds each. It's quite a challenging and interesting piece of work) I thought Night Watch was a good laugh. Actually, there's a load of great Russian films, fecked if I can remember names at the moment though. What would you recommend for viewing? I really want to see 'Rust and Bone', and I've heard 'Amour' is great, too.

My Sox Summer - 50 games for under $500

QUOTE (My_Sox_Summer @ Nov 7, 2012 -> 08:08 PM) Wouldn't it be great to see all the numbers laid out? Or even a retelling of how I got to that many games for $400? http://mysoxsummer.wordpress.com/ I must take the time to have a good look through your blog. I looked in on this early on, but then it just kind of passed me by. Well done. Having never been, I'm very jealous. Great work. -
QUOTE (Rowand44 @ Dec 9, 2012 -> 04:50 PM) Ha it started off as the "12 bars of Xmas" but now it's a lot more than that. It's all of Wrigleyville, it's nuts. No idea how big Wrigleyville is. But I take it the Tbox is your starter for, well, twelve, and then it just cascades into a vomit-filled puddle from there. A good day's fun, indeed.
-
FFS! I had to google what Tbox meant. Could you feckers not just have said 'the 12 pubs of Christmas'.

I'm in the terrible position of wanting to go out for Sunday afternoon pints, and no f%@ker being available to do so. An appaling state of affairs.

All New Soccer Thread ~ All Levels ~ All Leagues
Joxer_Daly replied to Texsox's topic in Alex’s Olde Tyme Sports Pub
(Thanks for the feedback about Juan Agudelo above. Didn't mean to be an ignorant b@st@rd by not ackowledging it) A fantastic week - qualifying for the last 16 of the Champions League. Absolutely over the moon. To think, if we'd hung on for a few seconds longer in the Camp Nou, we could've topped a group with Barcelona in it! It's been a roller-coaster. No-one gave us a chance, including me to be honest, of achieving what we have. Very proud of the Club and the team. Good win today back in SPL action away to Kilmarnock. Fantastic bus trip for the game on Wednesday too - hardcore!! Only back to normal from it today! Just praying the fixtures for the next CL round fall favourably for me - wife due on 28th January. The later in February they're fixed, the better. -
QUOTE (Reddy @ Dec 2, 2012 -> 06:06 AM) so i know this is stupid, but I've been No Contact w/ my ex for almost two weeks, but got an email tonight that I'd earned a reward on my AMC Stubs Card (movie card), meaning she used it tonight. it really made my stomach knot up and i kinda freaked for no reason. Not because I worry about her being with a guy (she saw Rise of the Guardians AND paid for both tickets, meaning probably her roomie and she was trying to rack up reward points) but because it was ODD to know exactly where she was and what she was doing - especially when it was something that we did together and loved doing together. I mean, obviously she's not gonna stop watching movies, but movie dates were like... our thing. haha i know that's lame and unexciting but we loved it. so now I'm like... what do I do? Ask her to get her own card instead of benefiting from the money i'd spent to rack up points, let it go and unsubscribe from the notifications, OR do I use the reward first? Mostly kidding on that last option. Mostly. This is no joking matter. Use the reward!!!

QUOTE (JoeCoolMan24 @ Nov 24, 2012 -> 12:54 AM) My aunt ordered one of those Apple TV things, and even though she only got charged for 1 of them, they sent her a box of 12! I told her to just keep them, or sell them on Ebay for like $50 each, but she said she doesn't want to steal from the company and is returning them. I told her Apple can surely afford to take a 0.00000000001% loss in product, and she was horrified I would ever think like that. Psh, religious people. Always trying to do the right thing and all. It's crazy! lol Tell her you'll take them back for her. Save her the hassle, caring nephew that you are.

QUOTE (The Critic @ Nov 23, 2012 -> 11:41 PM) Use amazon.co.uk - they'll be better able to take care of deliveries to Ireland. Didn't think they'd have a Black Friday thing... turns out they do. Just had a look at a few things on whitesox.com shop. Prices were good, but the extra cost for shipping was fairly sizeable.
-
QUOTE (Steve9347 @ Nov 23, 2012 -> 10:38 PM) I adore black Friday. I'd never even heard of Black Friday. But now, this year, thanks to this site, I have. I had been thinking of getting a smart tv in the new year... I'm tempted to go on Amazon and see what's available. A bit cautious about getting a tv shipped from the U.S. to Ireland, but I suppose it would be up to the sellers to make sure it got here safely? Also going to peruse the White Sox online shop to pick up a couple of things. Just need to work out what size I am in U.S. fittings. Also, authentic versus replica jersies - what are the major differences and is it worth the price difference to go for the authentic??
