QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Apr 2, 2013 -> 04:01 PM) Honestly, message boards are dinosaurs anymore. Most discussion has gone to facebook and twitter. It has nothing to do with catch-all threads. Pity. For proper discussion, I find Twitter a nightmare for trying to keep up with things if you're anyway busy. At least on here, you can track back to wherever you last read up to.

It must be said - Hawk Harrelson has to go
Joxer_Daly replied to Steve9347's topic in Pale Hose Talk
QUOTE (Jake @ Apr 2, 2013 -> 03:35 PM) The main effect of Hawk is making people believe that Steve Stone is some kind of genius. I will gladly concede that Hawk caters to the casual fan more than the avid one, though, in terms of baseball knowledge. He likes to teach parts of the game that anyone who played seriously or has watched closely for a long time would know. My girlfriend, on the other hand, learns a lot from Hawk -- of course, for her Hawk makes a boring game a lot less boring and she's become a huge fan...almost solely because Hawk drew her in. I really think folks underrate this. If you're flipping through channels, do you want Len Kasper (or other faceless broadcaster) droning on about this or that or a guy who actually conveys the ups and downs of a game. In the end, I watch lots of Sox games by myself. Hawk is like my old buddy watching the game with me. Sometimes he says things I don't agree with, are silly, or predictable. More often, though, I feel good knowing I have a guy who is at least as invested as me if not more and is not afraid to show it. I can relate to a lot of what you're saying there. -
Delighted with that result. Just watched the last two innings there this morning, so had to be really careful not to accidentally find out the result before I got to do so. Super performance in defence. Yeah, the off day is a bit of a balls, but at least we've our 100% win record to sit on.

This is it, at long last! Fire it up, Sox! -
Quick question for the Irish Americans amongst you... Is there a Chicago equivalent of the Dropkick Murphys?

Well, thread title says it all, really. Happy St. Patrick's Day, folks.

A grand start to the weekend. -
QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Mar 13, 2013 -> 10:21 PM) The AP is now running forwards with that story. Also seems to include what is the basis of his defense. Just read an article that also included that AP piece and mentioned this in its second last paragraph: Doesn't look like it's clearcut either way. I suppose, we'll see where he goes from here, anyway.

QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Mar 13, 2013 -> 07:45 PM) Steve Goffman Nine popes have been elected since the Chicago Cubs last won the World Series. Habemas Papam. Pope Francis... Do you think he has a Soxtalk login?
-
QUOTE (HickoryHuskers @ Mar 13, 2013 -> 12:24 PM) If the Brazilian guy gets elected pope, does that mean the Vatican automatically qualifies for the 2014 World Cup?

No Pontiff selected after the second and third votes this morning. A spot of lunch and then there'll be up to two more votes today.
-
Well, that was a grand half of an inning.

Haven't watched in years, but was glad Day Lewis picked his award up.

QUOTE (MHizzle85 @ Feb 22, 2013 -> 08:35 PM) I'm back! It was an incredible experience, but now we play the waiting game until we find out who makes it to NYC. I recapped as much as I could remember here: http://5throwjoe.com/?p=2927 http://5throwjoe.com/?p=2931 Thank you guys again for all your support. Hope your wait is worth it. Good luck.

QUOTE (Athomeboy_2000 @ Feb 21, 2013 -> 03:52 PM) Has anyone been to Disneyland Paris? We're goign there for two days next march and I'd love any advice you could provide. We plan on flying into London, train to DLP, a few days there, then a train into Pisa to visit my sister and her husband. Never been to Disneyland, but been to Paris a few times. It's been a while, though, but if you want to ask anything fire away. Having said that, my replies will probably be worse than useless.

QUOTE (3E8 @ Feb 22, 2013 -> 04:46 PM) There was nowhere to go but up. The "detractors" aren't too far off, our farm system is currently one of the worst in baseball. But we are moving in the right direction. We are spending more internationally, and beefing up our international scouting. Our amateur draft strategy has improved as well. Ah, right. Jesus, seems like a fairly fundamental thing to do; to build upon solid foundations. At least we're going in the right direction.

Thanks for posting all that info, ss2k5. Very positive (unsurprisingly) given that the impression I have is of outside commentators dismissing the Sox farm system as being poor. Obviously, he's going to be giving it all the good spin, but am I correct in having the impression that the Sox farm is definitely moving in the right direction, despite the detractors?

Been to a few matches on my own. No big deal, but would rather go with the usual lads I go to the various games with.
