  1. QUOTE(SleepyWhiteSox @ Mar 24, 2007 -> 12:51 PM) And I really liked Stranger than Fiction a lot more than I expected... Same here. Although it was strange watching Ferrell and Hoffman walk by areas of UIC I pass everday.
  2. QUOTE(BearSox @ Mar 24, 2007 -> 12:28 PM) Danks is a lock to make the team right now, and I doubt he goes in the pen... I hope the org. has learned their lesson w/ McCarthy. Does anyone think Russell will be promoted to AAA, and someone like Heath Phillips will be traded? What if Russell comes out tomorrow and strikes out 10 Rangers in 5 innings? Even if it's an unlikely, I still believe tomorrows performance -- if dominant -- may sway the coaches vote. Here's my rationale for selecting Russell. Most would say he's our second best option, right? If he begins the season in the majors and succeeds, Danks has time in AAA. If he fails immediately, then Danks is promoted. Conversely, if Danks succeeds immediately, Russell has time in AA/AAA. If he fails immediately, however, we're wasting valuable service time. How if it isn't until September when he's called up again? I just don't see how starting Russell would hurt us much. Give him three/four starts, and if he's bad, then Danks can come up. Anyways, if I were Williams, I'd be careful throwing Danks into the fire and risk looking like an idiot if he just absolutely implodes. Have a home-grown product try himself first, then afterwards, the pitcher you've been scouting for years and centered a McCarthy trade around.
  3. QUOTE(Balta1701 @ Mar 24, 2007 -> 12:00 PM) If the issue with Danks is whether or not he's ready, I just can't understand the urge to rush Russel to the big leagues even faster than Danks. It's my own opinion, but I'd rather have someone with Russell's stuff sort through their development in the majors than Danks.
  4. Anyone else willing to hold off anointing a 5th starter until Russell pitches tomorrow? Five innings against the Texas Rangers should not be overlooked. If he fares well -- ie; 5IP, 2 hits, 6SO's, 0ER, 1BB -- it should provide our coaches with a tough decision. I'd actually be more willing to have Russell as our starter because of one fact -- Boras. I just despise the idea of wasting arbitration time unless Danks remains in Chicago for good. Which certainly isn't guaranteed. Again, it would depend upon his Texas outing. He obviously possesses the pure stuff to succeed in the majors. Judging from his starts against Seattle and Kansas City, I'd say he's no further away than Danks. Both could use further conditioning; it just happens Danks is lefthanded and Russell throws 94 mph -- with movement.
  5. There's all you information you need, right there. No matter the comfort level one organization has towards another, it's the buyers responsibility to order an MRI or conduct a physical before approving any transaction.
  6. QUOTE(LVSoxFan @ Mar 23, 2007 -> 07:44 PM) Oh CRAP don't tell me that, LOL! Well on the upside, didn't Thorton have control issues before Coop got a hold of him? Yeah, he also had a 97 mph fastball. QUOTE(whitesox07champs @ Mar 23, 2007 -> 07:46 PM) Even though many of you guys will disagree with me, I still think we are moving him too fast. Another year in the minors and he should be set for next year. The way the Sox are talking this might be(should be) our number 1 starter in a couple of years. I think if he went to the minors he would come back next year ready to make a HUGE impact. I know we dont have much of a choice with Floyd pitching the way he is, but I dont agree with him starting the season with the sox. I'm not thrilled with rushing him, either. Danks just happens to be the best option available. The priorities are either to secure the 5th starters spot with the best available pitcher, or the next best (which is likely Russell) in place of developing John in AAA. If Russell dominates Texas tomorrow, it may present our coaches with an interesting decision. Both could use seasoning; but both can't be sent down either. One has to be selected.
  7. QUOTE(DBAH0 @ Mar 23, 2007 -> 07:29 PM) I was really hoping Floyd would be the one who came out and pitched well, but unfortunately that wasn't the case. I have this persistent sinking feeling that either Floyd begins the season in the bullpen, or begins in AAA and is immediately promoted (regardless of success in Charlotte) once someone begins to struggle. Answer this for me -- how does Williams answer the question of trading Garcia, and the perceived benefits it was supposed to provide the 2007 White Sox? He mentioned it on numerous occasions when media members were wondering whether such a move was a precursor to rebuilding. His only saving grace would be if Garcia is injured and requires a large amount of time on the disabled list. Now, because someone is bound to misinterpret what I'm saying, I believe dealing Garcia was necessary. Problem is, when the general manager mentions himself a trade was configured for our short-term and long term success -- and there's no 'short -term' option to speak of -- you're going to look rather foolish.
  8. QUOTE( @ Mar 23, 2007 -> 06:10 PM) Good! He has earned it. I'm not concerned about pushing him out there too soon. I like the kids makeup and he realizes he'll take his lumps at times starting out. Hopefully the fans will realize this and cut him a little slack. I like having 2 lefties in the rotation as well. I don't expect him to immediately pitch lights out, but -- at the least -- match McCarthy's production in Texas. Which is, what, ~5.00-5.50ERA with 160-180 IP? That's hardly an unreasonable expectation for our top pitching prospect. As much as we don't see it, there are pitchers out there who immediately produce. It's not a foreign concept. We'll need Danks or whomever to produce reasonably well if we want to win this division. This doesn't mean our success alone hinges on the 5th starter. Or that mimicking Liriano's domination from last season is necessary. He just can't be providing the ball club with a 7+ERA. Perhaps in 2005 the rotation could have absorbed such a record, but I'm not as confident with the current veterans.
  9. QUOTE(Kalapse @ Mar 23, 2007 -> 05:31 PM) The fact that most baseball pundits echoed Gillick's sentiments on the Garcia deal does seem to lend some credence to Flash's assessment however. Well, since you said it maybe more people will believe it.
  10. QUOTE(Tony82087 @ Mar 23, 2007 -> 05:05 PM) If we traded Garcia for Hirsh-Willy T-Buchholz, people would probably complain just as much. "Willy T is just the Latin Podsednik" "Hirsh belongs in AAA(6.17 ERA this spring,6.04 MLB ERA) "Buchholz is trash" Now, compare the above names to what we received for McCarthy. Jennings, mind you, is in his contract year while McCarthy has 5+ years remaining with Texas. I would have loved that from Garcia. QUOTE(mr_genius @ Mar 23, 2007 -> 05:16 PM) Chicago was suprised Philly would give up one of their top pitching prospects for a washed up starter who has lost 8 mph off his fastball . What , Because Philly thought they made a good deal that automatically means they did? ok, you're right. Garcia is gonna do great over there. No, Philadelphia expressing shock in our asking price proves we could have asked for more. Really, would it have been difficult to ask for one more piece? Something in addition to Floyd/Gonzalez; perhaps a low A pitching prospect?
  11. QUOTE(hitlesswonder @ Mar 23, 2007 -> 05:06 PM) I think Williams valued Floyd based on his projected performance if he turns things around -- by that I mean he paid for Floyd's perceived ceiling not his actual performance (it's the "I think this guy will be great with us even though he's sucked elsewhere" syndrome). It doesn't seem to be working out right now though. It's almost amazing if you read the scouting reports on Floyd (like those by John Sickels) that he can get such poor results. This is exactly it. I don't mind the thought process of acquiring pitchers who had yet to reach their potential, but not in the instance of Gavin Floyd. And especially not from Garcia in a market where pitching was overvalued by team in the market.
  12. QUOTE(RockRaines @ Mar 23, 2007 -> 05:06 PM) "Wheres our Liriano?" Garcia is garbage, yet we should have received a ton for him. More than what we received. I don't even know how you can argue this, Rock. I have supplied the proof on numerous occasions. If Philadelphia themselves were shocked our asking price was low.....then it obviously was too low.
  13. QUOTE(RockRaines @ Mar 23, 2007 -> 05:01 PM) Not really, Freddy has proven he had even less value than we thought. An injured, declining pitcher in his walk year isnt worth a damn. The point here is you can't apply what we know now about an injured pitcher to the trade in December. And what does it say when Philadelphia was shocked with the package we asked for -- thinking it was initially a salary dump?
  14. QUOTE(mr_genius @ Mar 23, 2007 -> 04:57 PM) well, maybe we could have got more for Garcia... but i think Kenny was looking for young pitchers in return, thats not something many teams give up easily. It's a fact he could have received more. Rosenthal said as much and everyone (not named jphat) understood its meaning.
  15. QUOTE(mr_genius @ Mar 23, 2007 -> 04:53 PM) We did get Floyd and Gio for Garcia. i think Freddy is about done as a MLB pitcher, seems like a good trade to me. I'm not looking at it that way. Whether or not Garcia requires surgery, at the time the trade was made, we should have received more.
  16. What's so tremendous about that play, Hawk and DJ? OMG, he moved his glove over two feet while charging in!!1!!1 Gavin not helping himself out offensively either.
  17. QUOTE(santo=dorf @ Mar 23, 2007 -> 04:43 PM) Excellent. Atkins is the man ($1 keeper in my league,) and Floyd can go to hell. How fast until someone brings up KW's quote of "not trading a SP unless it helps the 2007 team" once Floyd gets sent down? Pretty damn quick, I'll guarantee you that. It's just obvious to me numerous people within our organization thought way too much of Floyd.
  18. QUOTE(santo=dorf @ Mar 23, 2007 -> 04:39 PM) Who hit it, and were there any walks involved? Two -- one to lead of the inning and another to load the bases.
  19. QUOTE(ScottyDo @ Mar 23, 2007 -> 03:51 PM) anybody else thinking floyd's got an uphill battle now? Now I do.
  20. QUOTE(mr_genius @ Mar 23, 2007 -> 04:00 PM) inning over For whatever reason Matsui just sucked the life out of him. Right after, finds the zone and several mph on his fastball.
  21. QUOTE(fathom @ Mar 23, 2007 -> 03:51 PM) I'd like to see Danks do well the 2nd time through the order. From the first batter it appears he has lost control and velocity. It could get ugly very quick.
  22. It just came to me -- Alex Cintron is the latin version of actor C. Thomas Howell. http://www.imdb.com/gallery/granitz/0242-l...,%20C.%20Thomas ........ Now back to the game.
  23. Danks' curveballs sure look to be squeezed by the umpire this afternoon.
  24. QUOTE(Gene Honda Civic @ Mar 23, 2007 -> 03:38 PM) I recognize that ugly MOFO. SnB, am I right?
