  1. I think that this is Flowers reverting back to the norm, by which I mean he might have a batting average of .225 by the end of July, hopefully exposing him once and for all (to RH) that Flowers is a backup catcher. SMO
  2. With the widely held theory that Hawk is JR's mouthpiece, does anyone else here think that the Hawk love for Beckham is preparing us all for the great news that Beckham will be re-signed? SMO
  3. QUOTE (Melissa1334 @ May 8, 2014 -> 10:59 PM) Off topic, i know, but does anyone know when the abreu sports illustrated comes or came out. Kept hearing about it but i went to target, Walgreen's, etc and couldn't find one Got mine in the mail today, as a subscriber. I don't know when it hits the newsstands though. SMO
  4. I am a bit late to the Matt Garza discussion, but if he thinks he lost 30 W's pitching for the Cubs, he needs to step away from the crack pipe. And I enjoy immensely any discussion involving the rooftop owners. I think they are stealing Cubs "product" (and manure IS a product), but they legitamized the theft with the revenue-sharing contracts they signed with the rooftop guys. For the Cubs, or Bud Selig, to spout off on how the rooftop guys are obstacles to the Cubs efforts to upgrade and refurbish, is laughable. A Cub sympathizer I bowl with sputters about how the rooftop owners contracts are unenforceable, but I don't recall the Cubs making those deals under duress. Maybe the Cubs could win a battle of attrition since they could keep the rooftop guys in court to fight any obstructed view claims, but if the rooftop guys were to include legal expenses in their defense, that would make that strategy unwise. SMO
  5. QUOTE (KyYlE23 @ Apr 26, 2014 -> 03:24 PM) A Lower back injury for a guy who throws hard like he does is not good. I'm not gonna count on him coming back this season, something is clearly wrong. Once you start talking back surgery, you may very well be talking about career-ending, let alone season ending. I for one would be surprised if we see nate Jones throw a pitch this year. SMO
  6. QUOTE (buhbuhburrrrlz @ Apr 25, 2014 -> 11:15 PM) BULLS WIN HAWKS WIN MOTHERf***IN SOX WIN WALKOFF GRAND SALAMIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIII ROOKIE RECORD 9 HOME RUNS APRIL And the Cubs lose - perfect night!!! SMO
  7. QUOTE (farmteam @ Apr 25, 2014 -> 11:20 PM) Hell yes! Abreu, oh man. Way for Eaton to keep the inning going. Eaton was bustin' ass down the line to keep the inning, and the game, alive. Great AB by Semien to bring Abreau to the dish. My only gripe? The Sox so-called "closer" comes in, gives up the dreaded lead-off walk and then a tater to straight CF, and gets the win. Still, a win is a win. SMO
  8. Adam Dunn - the first, last, and only time I will take Dunn as my PTC
  9. I certainly understand the Sox not dropping any serious coin for a catcher if the assumption is that they will not contend in 2014. I still wish that this process did not include doubling Flowers' salary for his terrific 2013 season. But - what if it is June 1 and it turns out that Flowers' 2013 season was not just injury-plagued, but essentially his true average? I see a sea of green seats if the C spot is still a black hole and this issue does not get addressed. SMO
  10. The more I see Semien play the more I want him on the big league club. I am not quite ready to shove beckham out the door, but I do like knowing that if it happens, the replacement is more than capable. SMO
  11. I would concur with those who say that if Bora$ doesn't like it, there must be SOME good in it. SMO
  12. Do you really want to be in the position of WANTING more losses or fewer wins to win the bet? I'd say take the over on all three, or don't bet on the one(s) you don't take the over on. SMO
  13. My situation has fluctuated a lot over the last few years. One kid has aged out of the tax credit, gone to college, and incurred college loan interest. The other kid is approaching the age out of the tax credit in a year or so. Distributions from mutual funds, deductions fading to nothing. And both kids worked this year, so I will have to do their tax returns too. Last year we got over $2K back, but I really don't know how close we will be to that again this year. SMO
  14. A lot of car dealers now have salespeople dedicated to Internet shopping. If you are pretty sure of the make and model you want, check out those dealer's websites and ask for a quote for the car you want. Some of them even have unique stock numbers, so if you were so inclined, you could hit the dealer up on a Sunday when they are closed to check out the options and sticker price on the cars in stock. I agree with the poster who said NOT to mention that your old ride was totalled and you might be in a bind to act quickly. Last December, our old car was in bad shape and failed the air test, which you now need to pass to get a renewal license plate sticker. We were not about to pour more dough into this POS car, so we went shopping for a new one. Keep in mind that this was during the last week in December, and the pressure was on THEM to make another sale in calendar year 2011. We checked out cars in person on Friday, 12/29/2011. I eventually had Web prices from two dealers, and one of them called me Saturday morning (12/30/2011) to see what it would take to close the deal. I mentioned that the other dealer had the same car on their website for $300 less, and I gave this salesman the dealer and website stock number to verify. He called me back maybe 20 mins later and knocked another $500 off the price we talked about. The only other advice I might offer is NOT to bluff and say to dealer Y that you've got a better price from dealer X, unless you really do. They might tell you to take that deal.... Ulp! Which would suck if you aren't in a time position to continue the hunt. SMO
  15. This should be all you need to know about BP and PECOTA: These rocket scientists have PECOTA'd both the Sox and the Cubs to identical 77-85 records for 2013. I think that the Sox pitching will keep them above .500, while I look forward to the Cubs going back-to-back 100 games losers. Bite me, PECOTA SMO
