Maybe I am reading too much into it, but offering a qualifying offer seems to me that they are not going to sign him to a multiyear extension.

Obviously.  I think this pretty clearly means that what the Sox are offering and what Jose wants are not matching up.

Which, IMO, is probably a good thing.  Overpaying Jose Abreu for multiple seasons would be very stupid.  Overpaying him for 1 season would be less stupid.

wait what? $40 million per year? You can't have written that right.

The intent there would obviously be higher AAV for shorter term.  Still seems crazy, especially with Turner still there.

I think I'd rather just bring Yolmer back tbh

Yah, Dietrich definitely looked more interesting before his 2nd half nosedive.  But if not for his 2nd half nosedive, he wouldn't be available.

And unlike Yolmer, Dietrich can play the OF, has quite a bit of pop and can get on base.  I am not proposing the guy as a solution to anything, but he's a decent fit as the 25/26th man type on a cheap 1 year deal.  Could fill in at 2B until Madrigal is ready, move around thereafter.

    Just another option.

The odds of Jose just taking and being happy with the $18M QO next year are WAY higher than someone signing Jose to a multi year deal with a QO attached.

I don’t think a reasonable common sense middle ground should be that hard to find with Jose given his very public desire to stay...I’d say 2/28 is more than fair

I agree, but it begs the question why it hasn't happened yet.

You're citing this while also citing FG's as the barometer setter - FG's did not have manny exceeding 275 million.

I am not citing FG as the barometer.  I am just sharing the relevant information released by FG this am.  I did not recall McDaniel's predictions from last offseason, but obviously that is an important set of data.  I do feel like McDaniel's estimates, on the whole, were light - so would not be surprised to hear that is a trend.

    Let him walk

That was done by Bowden.  75% of the posters here are more in the loop than Jim fuckin' Bowden.

1/$11M seems light, but 3/$60M is never going to happen.  It'll be somewhere in the middle, but hoping McDaniel is closer!

How? I literally adjusted my Hamels number in this thread to 2 years 30 million and they project 2 years 28 million.

Keuchel I had a 3 years 50 million and they projected 3 years 45 - you're certainly holding me to a high standard if that's not close.

    Abreu I didn't project.

Gregorius, I gave 2 more years because of his age but the values were similar - 3 years 48 is similar to 5 years 68.

I wasn't talking about you specifically.

I don't really think it's possible for them to have a "pretty good idea" that someone is willing to beat his current contract, I think the owners aren't going to give him the advantage of the kind of back-channel communications people are imagining they're doing, and I think he's in the same basic position as 2 years ago - a solid DH in a market with lots of DH options and no one necessarily gunning to give a huge deal.

Yah, I don't think things are quite that cut and dry. I am sure Boras is aware of who has interest and to what extent.

If he is going into this blind, there is no way he is going to opt out this offseason.  May as well take the $23.75M and opt out next year.

    February.

Timing on free agency is really tough to predict, but if JDM opts out, I feel like his timing may be a bit quicker than that.  I would assume he has a pretty good idea that someone is willing to beat his current 3/$63 he has left on his deal if he does in fact opt out today,

At this point, I think JD doesn't out out, takes his $23.75M for 2020, and then opts out after next year when his salary reduces to $19.35M.  Going to be tough for him to beat $23.75M AAV for 2020.

If McDaniel is correct, that validates my assessment that Wheeler is not a top of the rotation starter. Doesn't $17 Million per year suggest that he is merely a #3? The issue should be more about finding a pitcher, or two, who can be difference makers and Wheeler doesn't seem to qualify.

I don't think anyone really thinks Wheeler is a "top of the rotation" pitcher.  He is a solid #3 on a team with a good rotation, obviously better on shitty teams.  He would be a nice rotation piece on all 30 clubs, but this guy isn't an elite starter by any means, and not sure anyone here thinks that.

Machado and Harper had markets that wouldn't pay more than 250 million until..... they got paid 300 and 330 million.

Going into last offseason, the expectation was that Machado and Harper would both beat $300 million.

Outside of Bumgarner, Wheeler, Ryu and Strasburg my overall forecasts, and the general consensus for most on this board, are really close to what was projected there.

And Hamels, and Abreu, and Miley, and Kuechel, and Gregorious.

But yah, I guess the other half were relatively close.

Seems like I'm high on the top 4 starters but about the same on the position players as fangraphs piece today. Kiley and I had near identical contracts for the first few bats like Donaldson and Grandal. Maybe I'm overvaluing the arms but from what I see the pitchers have been more likely - by 41% of FA signings - to be overpaid based on market forecasts than position players; whom are much more projectable.

I'd actually be really interested in Bumgarner at the forecasted rate, even though I'm not that interested in general. His 4.51 FIP away from san fran is really scary.

Kiley has wheeler at 4 years 68 million. I'll take the over for whatever kiley would like. If kileys forecasts are within reason the sox should be salivating at the prices and should be all In.

Here is the article for those wondering:  https://blogs.fangraphs.com/2020-top-50-free-agents/

Some pretty good values in there.  Quite a bit lower than being discussed here  Here are the top 15, and then a few that may be of interest.

    Cole - 7/$242

    Rendon - 7/$211

    Strasburg - 5/$150

    Donaldson 3/$71

    JD Martinez - 3/$77

    Grandal - 4/$70

    Ozuna - 4 / $70

    Bumgarner - 4/$64

    Wheeler - 4/$68

    Gregorius - 3/$48

    Castellanos - 4/$56

    Keuchel - 3/$45

    Ryu - 2/$32

    Moustakas - 2/$32

    Gibson 3/$45

    Puig 3/$39

    Hamels 2/$28

    Gardner 1/$13

    Encarnacion 1/$11

    Miley 1/$9

    Chris Martin 2/$12

    Jose Abreu - 1/$11

Jim Bowden did his predictions in an Athletic article and the only guys he had the White Sox as a fit for were Rendon & Abreu.  And his projected contract for José was 3/$60M.  That dude is such a hack.

I think the Sox gotta give Abreu the QO if he’s even the slightest bit interested in testing the market. If someone offers him something stupid that we shouldn’t match, at least get something for it. And if he takes it, that’s not a terrible result at this point.

As I’ve said before, use your money to add one of Wheeler / Bumgarner, one of JDM / Grandal, one quality reliever, and a swing-man.  Use your trade assets to acquire a RF.  There are a ton of guys who might be available and I think we should be able to land someone at a decent price.  Not sure I love Marte given he’s a 31 year old righty who doesn’t walk a lot (although he does get hit by a ton of pitches which helps).

I'd honestly be fine with Mazara if the rest of the FA adds are quality.

As I stated, Calhoun has been awful, against LH pitching, so he would have to be platooned. Reddick offers little power, for a guy who has put up sub par OBP, the last couple of seasons. I'm just not intrigued by either player. All just more evidence of how few LH power bats there are, out there. Very frustrating. The Sox have the money to spend, and no one to spend it on.

There is PLENTY to spend it on.

He declined as the year progressed. And his OPS has been solid, but nothing great. If we sign him we need to use his elite skillset, which is catching.

Likely because he was forced to play in the field (no DH) and wore down as the season dragged on...like most catchers do.

Oh look - another positive to signing Grandal!
