Salaries are averaged over the life of a contract for luxury tax reasons so no benefit there unfortunately.

Could theoretically benefit the sox a bit though, as they'd be paying him less as our guys are getting more expensive, giving us a tad more to spend elsewhere.  If Sox are ever worried about luxury tax issues, I'll be a very shocked man.

  2. I mean...I am not defending the move at all, but if you weren't going to use it, may as well get something for it, even if its just saving $500k.

The fact that they didn't spend it is what is a fucking joke.  But that is not new information - we've known that for awhile.  Sure, someone else could pop up, but I think most guys worth signing have been signed, or are already being courted by another team.

As balta suggested, I do hope someone asks Hahn specifically about this move and the Jones move at Soxfest.

I offer 3-60 with option for fourth.  24-20-16 and 16 option.  The payment structures gives us an advantage over teams near cap and drops salary when we have to start paying our own.

I like the structure. He may want a bigger guarantee on the team option option.

In any event, this offseason is going to look much better if it starts with a Grandal signing.

A side note...kind of surprised to see Abreu on that list of those who elected free agency already. Isn't the initial negotiating period 5 days? Thought he would at least negotiate explicitly with the Sox for that time period before officially electing free agency.

I also am a bit surprised they didn't offer Osich a contract. I know that's not the worst thing in the world, but he did well in the 2nd half and I think deserved another year at least, especially being a lefty. Boston obviously sees something in him.

It wasn't that they didn't offer Osish a contract.  They tried to slip him through waivers (likely in hopes that they could in fact retain him), and he got claimed.  If they had zero interest in him whatsoever, they could have outrighted him with the others a day or two ago, or just waited until non-tender deadline and non-tender him then.

Ok, that's not really the point is it.  Who?

Lol you want me to list off guys with trade value?

Stiever, Dunning, Walker, Rutherford, Adolfo, Basabe, Sheets, Thompson, Dalquist, Pilkington, Lambert and Hamilton should all have trade value and are the primary pieces other teams would be interested after the elite prospects.

Assuming that guys like Robert, Cease, Kopech, Madrigal and Vaughn aren't available, who are the guys that have so much value?

I didn’t use the term “so much” value. I said they have plenty in the system after Vaughn to acquire a guy like Nimmo (just an an example of a controllable player that fits and will require a solid return).

This narrative that the Sox don't have anything to trade is getting ridiculous.   You don't know how other teams value their players.  Just because they're not on some bullshit list doesn't mean they don't have value and the Sox have plenty of financial flexibility to take on salary and matchup great with teams looking to move contracts. They're in a very good position and I hope they take advantage of it.

    +1,000,000.

Its also funny because the Sox legitimately could trade for anyone is baseball, and have arguable one of the most valuable prospects in baseball.  Now, they're unlikely to move any of those guys, but still.  Even after Vaughn, the Sox have plenty to acquire someone like Nimmo, despite what a few here keep saying.

    Options:

SP: Cole, Strasburg, Wheeler, Quintana*, Hamels, Miley

    RP: Betances, Rondon, Harris, Hudson

    DH: Martinez*, Donaldson, Encarnacion, Kendrick

RF: Ozuna, Puig, Gordon (not leaving KC), Markakis, Castellanos, Avi

Other: Abreu (will be back), Grandal, Adam Jones

Quintana and Markakis will not be FA.  They both have no brainier team options.

That would be awesome.  While I prefer Grandal, JDM would be nice consolation prize.  Obviously signing him adds some complexity to the 1B/DH situation, but it’s definitely better than coming away empty handed in terms of impact bats this offseason.

Oh it’s definitely better. Sox need good hitters. JD Martinez is that. Makes finding a legit LH RF paramount, though.

Qualifying offers are Boras’ kryptonite, he just refuses to accept how they hurt his players’ value on the open market. That being said, he’s got to be confident as fuck that something better is out there to pass on 3/$63M in guaranteed  money.

It just seems to me based on some of his comments that he's ready to move on, and certainly feels like Boston wants him to opt out.  Maybe he has a handshake agreement with Boston that he'll opt out if they don't give him the QO.

  11. 6 minutes ago, Balta1701 said:

Personally that's why if I were in his spot I wouldn't opt out, I'd hold onto the guaranteed money for the next year (and I believe he could still opt out next season as well). It's a fairly high risk in exchange for a moderate reward; there's enough other options out there and fairly few teams, where you could see demand drying up. Castellanos, Moustakas sign with those 2 teams and now he's still on the market at the end of February again.

But then, ballplayers do like to be aggressive and bet on themselves.

Yah, I mean 4/$75-80M is better than 3/$63. I think he’ll opt out. At least he gets to choose where he plays then. If he doesn’t opt out the Red Sox are likely to trade him.

Ideal? Abreu, Cole, Calhoun/Reddick (team chips in a little bit to save payroll), Moustakas (2 year deal), Will Smith (2 year deal), and Nova/Teheran/I'm open to other ideas. Comes in somewhere around $140 million give or take, strengthens all parts of the team, leaves me the ability to clear out 1b/DH next offseason if Vaughn is ready, gives me the best FA on the market who will also be movable almost every year if he stays healthy, and importantly I still have money to spend in 2021 to fill the gaps of whatever goes wrong this year.

Note the tradeoffs I made. I went with the top starter and top bullpen pitcher, but because of that I went with a cheaper DH and RF option and a weak 6th starter/bullpen guy.

Makes sense.  Thanks.  In this scenario Moustakas is your 2B until Madrigal, arrives and then he is your primary DH?  I assume Collins is just your backup catcher in this scenario?  What kind of money do you think Mous requires on a 2 year deal?  Something like 2/$25M?

I think that's a recipe for another bottom 5 in the league offensive season with an average at best bullpen and missing the playoffs by a long ways.

You've probably stated it somewhere in here over the past month, but I am curious, what exactly would your offseason plan be?  Seems you always say if we invest in SP, the lineup will suck.  If we invest in the lineup, the pitching will suck.  Maybe you just think the Sox will suck regardless, but what would you do this offseason if you were in charge to put the Sox in the best position to contend in 2020, but also for multiple years thereafter.

Neither of those things should happen. If they do, they messed up.

Yah....well, I think JDM is going to get a 4 year if he opts out.

Abreu I would be VERY surprised if he gets more than a 2 year deal, but.......apparently he is is going to be here until he retires, so does it really matter how long hs next contract is?

I'm excited for Andrew Vaughn, but we've learned time and time and time again, nothing is sure thing. Dude put up a .760 OPS in A+. I know that doesn't mean much, I know it was a super small sample size. But I'm not going to take a player like JDM off the board because of Andrew Vaughn. Not yet at least.

I full predict Abreu signs a 2 year deal with a club option for Year 3. If Vaughn pans out and looks ready to start the 2021 season with the MLB club....then you've got a good problem on your hands.

The Sox need to compete next season. That's where we are at. Do what you need to do to get us there.

I hear ya.  But if you give JDM a 4 year deal and Abreu a 3 year deal, there is nowhere for Vaughn to play in 21-23.  I am not counting on him necessarily, but I am not also going to go out of my way to literally block him.

So, they send him down and he absolutely dominates... they're going to hold him down through June when they had already determined he was ready prior to his injury? Maybe, but I find it unlikely.

I don't think they're going to let him pitch enough innings to "dominate" until they're prepared to bring him up.  Kopech maybe has 150 innings in his arm next season before he's shut down.   IMO, they're going to take it very slow with him to start in AAA, take the kid gloves off in June, and he'll be up shortly thereafter.

  17. 4 minutes ago, Balta1701 said:

It shouldnt be, if he struggles in ST then he should start in the minors. Whether they'll use that to offset the lost service time I don't know, but he should have to prove he's ready to go before he's up.

But having a guy like Teheran who can throw 50 innings as a starter while waiting on Kopech for a few million is different from having a guy like Quintana or Hamels who can throw 175 innings and who probably will stay in the rotation the whole year. If you bring in one of those guys, and you sign Wheeler, when Kopech is ready to go - who's the odd man out? Do you give up on Lopez if he has an iffy start again? Do you give up on Cease? Are you counting on an injury that early? What happens when Rodon is back and you now are 7 deep, are Rodon and Lopez both bullpen pitchers?

Sounds like a great problem to have.

  18. 2 minutes ago, Look at Ray Ray Run said:

You can monitor innings at the big league level - it's not "easier to do" in the minors. That's a BS excuse.

He may start in the minors because his command isn't all the way back; that's a valid excuse.

Ok.  I disagree.  Hahn has pretty much already confirmed Kopech will be in AAA for awhile, so argue all you want, but that is what is going to happen.

  19. 7 minutes ago, Look at Ray Ray Run said:

Don't think Kopechs is a guy's who's service time you can now fuck with after you already said he was up to stay prior to his injury. If he's performing he'll be up imo.

This has been discussed a lot here, but Kopech isn't going to be ready to throw 170+ major league innings.  Hahn has already said he's starting in the minors.  They'll move him slowly there.  Maybe if he's dicing AAA by mid-May and is stretched out, they'll bring him up, but I think they'll kid glove him until June, and bring him up a couple weeks later.

I'd much rather have Michael Kopech pitching for the White Sox from mid-June-September than April-July.
