With grim #MLB trade deadline ahead for starting pitchers, #WhiteSox adopt wise strategy: Don't wait https://t.co/pFuQp7HLeW https://twitter.com/BNightengale/status/739808167404535808 Makes a good point. Basically sox needed a workhorse starter and with there being limited pitchers out there for the deadline possibly and next year it shores up a spot the Sox would be looking for in the future anyway. Even when fulmer comes up and Latos leaves they would have been short in rotation. For the value of shields this year and next 2 if he doesn't opt out should be good for the sox as long as he keeps eating innings and pitches decent.

QUOTE (flavum @ Jun 5, 2016 -> 10:28 AM) Miguel Gonzalez is available out of the pen today. Finally have a long man out of the pen

James Shields won't report to the #WhiteSox officially until Tuesday. https://twitter.com/CSNHayes/status/739204345057529856

Source: #Padres sending #WhiteSox more than $30M in Shields trade. https://twitter.com/Ken_Rosenthal/status/739203258292412416

#WhiteSox have acquired veteran RHP James Shields and cash considerations from the Padres in exchange for Erik Johnson & Fernando Tatis Jr. https://twitter.com/whitesox/status/739200997063569409 Sox make it official

QUOTE (ChiSox59 @ Jun 4, 2016 -> 04:00 PM) He can't do math. The #Padres will pay $29 million and #Whitesox pay $27 million left in James Shields deal https://twitter.com/BNightengale/status/739199974609539072

So if James Shields does not opt out of deal, #WhiteSox will pay $27 million and #Padres pay $19 of the remaining $56 M in deal https://twitter.com/BNightengale/status/739199563936845824

The #Whitesox are paying $27 million of the remainder of James Shields contract https://twitter.com/BNightengale/status/739198695036489728

QUOTE (BigHurt3515 @ Jun 4, 2016 -> 03:49 PM) Rosenthal confirms. Sucks we had to give up Tatis Hopefully people don't start doing the why we gave up Tatis like why we have with thompson for frazier

Source confirms: Shields trade done, as others have reported. #Padres getting Johnson, Tatis Jr. from #WhiteSox. Significant cash to CWS. https://twitter.com/Ken_Rosenthal/status/739197185569361920

Sources: The minor leaguers the Padres are getting for Shields are Fernando Tatis Jr. and Erik Johnson. https://twitter.com/sdutdennislin/status/739196163723694080

QUOTE (StrykerSox @ Jun 4, 2016 -> 03:42 PM) Was Shields supposed to start for SDP tomo? So, when will he slot in for us? Will he just replace Latos/Gonzalez? Yes he was supposed to start tomorrow. I'm guessing he starts on Tuesday. After day off Monday. Would be sale, Quintana, shields, Rodon, latos/Gonzalez

Also hearing #WhiteSox deal for James Shields is official. Erik Johnson included in return. Unclear on other names, $$. https://twitter.com/CSNHayes/status/739194067855286273

QUOTE (Jose Abreu @ Jun 4, 2016 -> 03:33 PM) The link says Chuck Garfien but this is a Chris Cotillo tweet when you click on it... doesn't make sense to me Cause I went off the retweet of garfien instead of going to cotillos page and get link of tweet there. Usually I'm better then this

Source: Shields to White Sox is done. Players being notified. #Padres https://twitter.com/ChuckGarfien/status/739190657621852160

The #Whitesox expected to send Class A prospect to #Padres for James Shields. Fernando Tatis Jr has been discussed, per @sdutdennislin https://twitter.com/BNightengale/status/739188079877980166

James Shields has made his last 277 scheduled starts dating back to April 2008. He is an unparalleled type of workhorse in today's age. https://twitter.com/BrianBilek_/status/739183184672350208

One of the details to go is commish approval, which is required when millions change hands, as is the case here #shields https://twitter.com/JonHeyman/status/739182901074399232

While shields has an opt-out after this season, it's unlikely he'd walk away from $42M over 2 years #chisox #padres https://twitter.com/JonHeyman/status/739182519254286336 With starting pitching being thin next year sox could use him further after this year

Padres' push to move James Shields--while eating about half the money--comes just three days after owner ripped him by name in interview. https://twitter.com/Buster_ESPN/status/739176253811396612 Probably helped to just want to move him and Sox not having to give up much

Sources confirm James Shields to White Sox is looking close . https://twitter.com/MLBBruceLevine/status/739174900141821953

QUOTE (Jose Abreu @ Jun 4, 2016 -> 02:18 PM) Jon Heyman ‏@JonHeyman 40s41 seconds ago Padres, chisox have agreed on the principals of shields deal, with only details to go Probably going to need to be approved by commissioner since money might be involved

QUOTE (hi8is @ Jun 4, 2016 -> 02:12 PM) If Jay is included I see him in left at times with Melky moving to DH Could see him replacing Jackson and Sox still going to get a LH hitter for dh

If Sox get jay he's putting up a 1.1 war vs Jackson at .1 according to baseball reference. Would think jay replaces jackson

QUOTE (soxfan2014 @ Jun 4, 2016 -> 02:09 PM) Platoon him with Jackson moving Jackson to backup OF most of the time. Honestly if he hits better then Jackson and can play adequate cf I would have jay starting most of the time
