Ahhhh, the home boston series -- two more games that should have been wins. lost 2-1 on the Colon two hitter and then the extra inning game with the two Ortiz homers when Rowand was thrown out at third and Willie Harris was allowed to hit and ..... enough bad memories. I think this team officially died on the Anaheim/Texas trip in which it was fortunate to win 1 game against two dreadful teams. Totally packed it in in Arlington. Once the downward spiral begins, this team has nobody to pull it out of the slide. Leadership, tenacity, clutch performers, patience, consistency -- all of the above. Time to blow this group up and start over. Facts are facts == The Twins have kicked our ass for three straight years.

The stat to remember: In less than 24 complete innings: Twins hitters == 16 walks. White Sox hitters == one walk. Maggs last night in the ninth before the Everett DP. These guys have no clue how to work counts, hit to the opposite field or show any kind of patience. It's wail and weep. somewhere Von Joshua and Gary Ward are laughing their asses off. just looking at minor league numbers -- and seeing Charlotte in person -- here is my list. 1. Honel. Continues to average a strikeout per inning as he moves up the system. Solid control. Still needs another year in the minors. No reason to rush him or overwork him. 2. Reed. Hard to believe the guy could hit over .400 in a half year of AA in his first full season as a pro. Great control of the strike zone. Seems to be an above average runner. Power remains the only question. 3. Cotts. Didn't handle the big-league pennant race. And the control problems are legitimate. If he figures it out, he'll be OK. But there is no assurance the control will come. 4. Pacheco. Got to like 20 fewer hits than innings pitched at AA. What you have to question is strikeouts, only 116 in 151 innings. No sure thing. 5. Borchard. Time is running out. He'll get every chance because of the $5 million bonus, but 103 whiffs and only 27 walks in 435 at bats and mediocre power numbers in a hitters' park are a major, major alarm. 6. Rauch. Sox did what they should have done in 2002 -- used him carefully. Only threw 125 innings. He's got excellent control. Still wonder if he has enough velocity to be more than a No. 4 or 5 starter. 7. Wylie. Another forgotten man because of arm troubles. Only threw 57 innings at Birmingham with mixed results. But they must see something because they're sending him to the Arizona Fall League. 8. Munoz. Promoted quickly -- too quickly for a guy who didn't turn 21 until late June. Pitched much better the last two months, carving his ERA down to 4.75 after it was in the mid 6s most of the summer. 63 Ks in 55 innings shows he's got a strikeout pitch. 9. Yan. You've got to be intrigued by a guy who keeps stealing 75-plus bases every year. Only hit .264 with NO power, not even gap power. That's a problem -- only 16 extra base hits. Needs to increase his walk total if that's all he's going to hit. 10. Bajenaru. Another forgotten man because of arm problems. Took over as closer for Birmingham after Ring left and rang up 14 saves, averaging a strikeout per inning. *I didn't include Anderson, Nanita, Sweeney, McCarthy, Valido, Castro, Bounds, King, Young, Johnson or any of the other short-season A guys because they're SOOOO far away from the big leagues. *I don't think it's a very impressive list. Don't see many guys there who can help next year.

What more can we all say, other than in addition to all of its other flaws, this team has zero spine?

Twins know they can really go for the throat tonight. hard to see the Sox fighting back under those circumstances.

it's been a team thing. Koch has got to be Number One. He killed us early, now he's such a non-factor that I can't imagine him pitching for the Sox again. The sad thing is Marte showed last year he could do the job but Sox has refused to believe in him. By the time we turned it over to Gordon and Marte this year, it was too late. Konerko gets runnerup. After three solid years, a major regression this season. And even though he turned it on in the second half, he has disappeared again the last 10 days or so. Still capable of being above-average player, but for $8 million, we can't afford his numbers at those prices for another season. Valentin is Number Three. He has improved in the field, but he's no longer the offensive force he was in 2000. And smart managers know all they have to do to stop him late in the game is turn him around. One of these days the Sox have to develop a decent SS in the system. Who was the last one? Bucky Dent? Frank goes fourth. He's become way too streaky and home run oriented. He can't play in the field. And he's a station to station base runner. Time for a change. And he's no leader. Not at all. And number five is the number five starter spot. What did the Sox get from that spot this season? Two wins. Maybe three. Cotts got one. Wright one and I don't remember if Stewart got any. The failure of the 'great' young arms to step forward is a reminder to take all that Baseball America Top 20 Prospect List stuff with a grain of cement. I didn't put Manuel on the list. Why? Because a guy can't be a disappointment if you don't expect anything from him.

If Torre goes down, Steinbrenner will fly to Sacramento immediately to lock Manuel up for a long-term deal.

it's four straight games Twinkie pitching has stopped the sox. No long ball, no runs. It's evident to anybody who watches, but evidently they're watching a different game in the dugout. So they swing from the heels -- and pop out, while getting their asses kicked by Ryan, Rivas and the other hall of famers in the Minnesota lineup. And the walk differential in this series --1 by sox hitters, 13 by the Twins -- is one of the first things the NEW MANAGER will talk about in spring training. What will Bartolo do? Does it really matter?
