  1. QUOTE (Charlie Haeger's Knuckles @ Jul 31, 2014 -> 12:39 PM) Needs more Ys in there. Frowyny?
  2. Smyly? More like Frowny. EDIT: I wish there was an emoticon that better expressed how stupid that joke was.
  3. QUOTE (Chisoxfn @ Jul 31, 2014 -> 10:02 AM) Morales was lousy. Plus Milone has three more years of team control and the Twins have a desperate need for some pitching.
  4. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Jul 30, 2014 -> 04:26 PM) Garcia is the least likely guy on the team to GDIP. That means if he makes contact, the run scores. That is true, but Garcia is also more likely to hit a too-shallow fly ball than Sierra, and they had the infield in so a ground ball may not have driven in the run. If Leury had a much higher contact rate than Sierra it would have made sense, but basically Robin just took a bad hitter and replaced him with a worse hitter. It's not a good recipe. QUOTE (Jake @ Jul 30, 2014 -> 04:28 PM) Whenever a decision made by Robin backfires, it's wrong. When a decision that goes right may have defied logic...still wrong! Boom. Robin = always wrong, no matter what Nobody said Robin is always wrong, that's straw man garbage. It's about judging the process and not the results, and nullifying the argument that I/we/they only criticize Robin when the players don't execute. And isn't a decision that "may defy logic" by definition the wrong decision?
  5. QUOTE (scs787 @ Jul 30, 2014 -> 03:42 PM) Scott Merkin ‏@scottmerkin 8m Lindstrom and Garcia to Charlotte this week Friday That's awesome. I predicted he(Avi) would be back mid August, and I stand by that. I predicted he wouldn't be back this year - happy to be (probably) wrong on that one.
  6. How about this one - July 2, Angels @ Sox, tied at 2 in the bottom of the ninth with runners at the corners and one out. Moises Sierra is due up, and in roughly 80 plate appearances with the team he had been about a league-average hitter. Robin pinch-hits Leury Garcia, who was in a 1-for-25 slump and is just generally terrible at the plate. There are no lefty/righty numbers that were relevant here. No move had occurred earlier in the inning that would require another move to shift defensive pieces around in the top of the 10th. It was a situation that demanded contact, only Garcia actually strikes out more than Sierra - he just looks like a contact hitter because he's a little person. What is the explanation here? Why make that substitution? Why pinch hit with the worst hitter on the team? By the way, Leury singled and won the game. I just want to prove that it's not always hindsight management that leads to complaining. The move worked, but it was veerrrry tactically stupid and I remembered that. There's no shortage of examples like this with Robin. This shouldn't be difficult to admit.
  7. QUOTE (VAfan @ Jul 30, 2014 -> 11:26 AM) As for how many games has Robin cost the team in 2014? Well, how many blown saves does Bellisario have? Does anyone here think Bellisario should have been the closer when Lindstrom went down? Or why does he seem to have an infatuation with Javy Guerra in tight games, when he's blown saves in all 4 of his opportunities? This guy! He was by far the hottest reliever at the time and the bullpen is full of interchangeable guys who live and die with their BABIPs. I think Robin is a subpar manager too, but that isn't one of the reasons. It's 80% because he intentionally walked Jason Giambi.
  8. QUOTE (PorkChopExpress @ Jul 30, 2014 -> 11:18 AM) Why is it a rigid rule that you have to have a "#1, #2, #3, #4 and #5" pitcher? If you could have two #1's, wouldn't you want to? Sale-Sherzer-Q would be an awesome short series rotation. Truth. The goal is to assemble the best rotation possible, period. It doesn't matter where guys slot in. But, the fact that we already have top pitching talent means that we would be better off allocating resources somewhere else - a left fielder, left-handed power to replace Dunn, catcher, bullpen, etc. Combine that with the knowledge that teams who sign the hot stove's hottest pitcher literally almost always regret it eventually, and I say ignore Scherzer.
  9. QUOTE (HickoryHuskers @ Jul 30, 2014 -> 10:43 AM) Noesi vs Scherzer Full lineups later As Stone said last night, "great pitching matchup." Let's hope so?
  10. QUOTE (Jose Abreu @ Jul 29, 2014 -> 09:01 PM) "Abreu's good but he doesn't hit for average." He's hitting .299 "He has to walk more" Why should he walk more with a 299/31/83 power line "He sucks at fielding" 7th in baseball for 1st base fld% Not putting any stock in fielding percentage, but he passes the eye test and is definitely not hurting us defensively. You can see him spackling holes in his game as the season goes on, just like at the plate. And for advanced numbers, he's 4th of 9 qualified AL first basemen in UZR. Seems about right.
  11. QUOTE (Jose Abreu @ Jul 29, 2014 -> 11:21 PM) Trading Gordon now would give Semien/Micah some good experience at 2B. Our best shot to move him is probably in August. We saw what little trade value he has when Darwin Barney was a better option. QUOTE (1dog @ Jul 30, 2014 -> 12:06 AM) Could you please explain this? Eaton's baserunning is not that good? I'm thinking the exact opposite. Think he means the SB/CS numbers. 10-for-16 isn't great.
  12. QUOTE (Vance Law @ Jul 29, 2014 -> 03:08 PM) And lots of people wanted to just hand the opening day 3B job to Davidson and DFA Gillaspie. Even still I'd say a majority of people would say the 2 biggest revelations of the season are Abreu (obviously) and Eaton though Gillaspie has contributed more. Because of Eaton's higher grindiness quotient? That certainly raises his profile. Eaton slides into third base on triples when there's no chance of a play, while Gillaspie makes faces like this:
  13. QUOTE (BigHurt3515 @ Jul 29, 2014 -> 01:31 PM) Just pointing out he can get walks. Who knows how the AB's are going and what they are having him work on.. Maybe he is just getting pitches to hit and he is swinging and doesn't get a chance to walk. And he is hitting them. My point is if I'm choosing between Eaton and Micah Johnson to lead off next year, I'm taking Eaton unless Micah shows some quick development.
  14. QUOTE (HickoryHuskers @ Jul 29, 2014 -> 01:24 PM) Well, the Tigers got shut out 1 of every 12.5 games that season and Alvarez was definitely an above average pitcher at the time so those probably weren't terrible odds. I hadn't considered the poor opposition, but still, it's not like Wilson was some CG artist. Only four shutouts in his career up to that point.
  15. QUOTE (BigHurt3515 @ Jul 29, 2014 -> 01:03 PM) He just had 3 BB's in a game a few days I ago I believe He did, which is great, but it's pretty sparse outside of that. And that's fine for now.
  16. QUOTE (HickoryHuskers @ Jul 29, 2014 -> 01:13 PM) Also, the only other people in our section were two guys who must have had made at least $1K in bets on games every day. One of them had $100 on Alvarez tossing a CG SO at 25:1, and blew a gasket when he got yanked after giving up a 1-out single in the 8th with a 3-0 lead. Serves him right, those are terrible odds.
  17. QUOTE (Dick Allen @ Jul 29, 2014 -> 12:33 PM) That isn't the same. I'm not taking 19% of the worst AB in which Danks was pitching. If Adam Dunn has a good game 80% of the time, no one would ever want to get rid of him. Q is a good pitcher. Throw out his worst 4 starts ER-wise and his ERA is 2.28. Danks isn't Q. No one said he is. I haven't even said he's worth a top prospect. I even commented if the Sox wanted JR Murphy, they would have to sweeten the pot. All I am saying is Danks is not the bum advanced stats makes him out to be. The games he pitches 4 innings and gives up 8 runs are going to be losses if he pitches 4 and gives up 6. He is 6 earned runs away from an ERA below 4.00. For the most part, IMO, he has pitched better than his numbers, and if he threw 93 even, with the exact same results, people would have a totally different opinion of his performance. Sometimes the results are what counts. Danks' 4 stinkers: 5-02: 5 IP, 8 ER, Sox lose 12-5 5-18: 4.2 IP, 7 ER, Sox lose 8-2 6-22: 5 IP, 6 ER, Sox lose 6-5 7-20: 4.1 IP, 7 ER, Sox lose 11-7 The Sox likely win at least one of those games if John Danks is merely bad instead of terrible. That does matter - every run potentially matters. One extra win every 21 games is 7-8 wins for a season. I'm not saying he has to be great every time out. I'm not even sure what anyone's saying or which side of the argument everyone's on at this point. All I know is that he's pretty comfortably a back-of-rotation pitcher now, and his salary dampens his trade value a lot.
  18. QUOTE (Dick Allen @ Jul 29, 2014 -> 12:04 PM) For a guy who complains when he thinks pitching moves are being based on ERA, you sure do mention ERA a lot. What I mentioned is take the 4 starts out of 21 where Danks got pummeled and gave up 7 or 8 runs. His other 17 starts , which include a couple of non quality starts produces an ERA of 2.89. His 4 worst games he allowed 28 runs in 19 innings. His other 112 innings, 36 ER. You can give me xFip SIERRA all that crap. What matters in the end is runs, and Danks usually does OK with that. When they hand out the trophy at the end of the year, you can't use a challenge and have them look at the xFIP replay. As others have pointed out, if you magically remove 20% of any pitcher's worst starts, they will look very good.
  19. QUOTE (witesoxfan @ Jul 29, 2014 -> 10:04 AM) He's got a mediocre strike out rate, a mediocre walk rate, he gives up a lot of home runs, he doesn't throw as hard, he's been incredibly mediocre to bad overall as a pitcher this year, and he's due another $30 mill or so. As a back end of the rotation starter for the Sox, I have no problem with John Danks, but I'm trying to temper expectations for what the return will be. Agree totally, and this is exactly why the prospect of trading him isn't that exciting.
  20. QUOTE (Eminor3rd @ Jul 29, 2014 -> 07:21 AM) The MLB average line for a C is: .250/.314/.387 (96 wRC+) Tyler Flowers' line is: .243/.299/.350 (80 wRC+) Also, reports are mixed on how good he is at defense. I think it's safe to say he's improved a lot, but I'm not sure we can call him a guy who makes an 80 wRC+ "worth it." There was an article on Fangraphs a little while back about offense improving steadily over time for catchers, and that perhaps their positional adjustment for WAR needs to be changed a bit. Not sure what to think since, regardless of offense, it will always be one of the toughest positions to fill.
  21. QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Jul 29, 2014 -> 09:28 AM) This is stunning to me if true? No mention of those adjustments in the Fangraphs Library. http://www.fangraphs.com/library/pitching/fip/
  22. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Jul 29, 2014 -> 09:13 AM) With the way Eaton makes contact and is able to punch and spray the ball around the IF, if Micah Johnson can really be a leadoff hitter, Eaton would be a great traditional two hole guy. Micah would have to show a little more of the on-base strength that Eaton has demonstrated at the major league level. He has yet to start taking walks in Charlotte, but there's no reason to think he can't.
  23. QUOTE (chitownsportsfan @ Jul 28, 2014 -> 03:56 PM) Dude, I'm talking about obvious noob stuff like running out of pitchers, "forgetting" to PR for Jose and then PR for him when he's on 2B, bringing on a LHP for the platoon matchup and then having the opposing manager make the obvious move to then bring on a righty PH and batting Gordon Beckham and Ramirez 2nd while the guy with the highest OBP on the team can't get out of the bottom 1/3 (Conor). And to answer your question, maybe 1 or 2 games at most. As I've said so many freaking times: managers don't really mean s*** in baseball but that sure as heck you don't try and get the best you can. Intentionally walking Jason Giambi... I was pulling my hair out.
  24. QUOTE (Jose Abreu @ Jul 25, 2014 -> 10:01 PM) -Peavy's Final White Sox Start: 7/25/13: 7 IP, 4 ER -Danks Tonight: 7/25/14: 7 IP, 4 ER -Abreu, Viciedo, and Flowers had big games Nice win. Correia had nothing and the lineup made sure the box score reflected that. I regret not being around at the time to get this on the record, but I didn't like Robin sending Danks out for the seventh. He had given up a couple loud outs in the sixth and we had the big lead so it seemed like a good night to just yank him early. That homer by Arcia was not a cheapie.
  25. QUOTE (Feeky Magee @ Jul 25, 2014 -> 10:05 PM) Ignoring trade possibilities, Russell Martin >>>> Tyler Flowers Only if Flowers lets him borrow the #magicglasses.
