  1. QUOTE (shipps @ Jan 28, 2016 -> 09:19 AM) If FO believes that he is a lock to leave they need to trade in 2 years to maximize that return then. So he may be gone in two years actually. If the next 2 years are bad and the future looks bleak, I could see them opening up to the possibility mid-2017. Also depends on the arms coming up which could still be drafted this year/already in the system.
  2. Oh wait I always forget about his first year in the pen. That's what always throws it off for me.
  3. QUOTE (lasttriptotulsa @ Jan 28, 2016 -> 09:05 AM) It's actually three years of free agency. But on top of that they also gave him guaranteed money for his last pre-arbitration year and all three of his arbitration years. It definitely should be considered a long term extension as you are guaranteeing him his salary for 5 years where most pre-arbitration guys don't have that luxury. Ah for some reason I kept thinking it was 2. And I understand the concept of signing guys early. Teams like the Royals, Rays and Pirates seem to do that with everyone who comes up because they have to.
  4. QUOTE (Dick Allen @ Jan 28, 2016 -> 09:05 AM) But it saved a ton of money. If the Sox did what Caulfield says is stupid, it would have cost them a lot more. Yes it did. And nothing that guy says ever makes much sense.
  5. QUOTE (shysocks @ Jan 28, 2016 -> 08:57 AM) Yeah I'm not sure why anybody would argue that the Sale contract is anything less than gosh darn delightful for the Sox. I don't see where exactly I argued it isn't. Just saying it really only buys 2 years of control. It is a steal and everyone here knows it. Just acknowledging that he will still get paid.
  6. QUOTE (OmarComing25 @ Jan 28, 2016 -> 08:42 AM) So that means the Cubs would have to make two trades to fit him in. Seems unlikely, especially if someone moves on him soon. I could see Hammel being a throw-in in a deal just to replace depth for a team the Cubs get a starter from.
  7. QUOTE (caulfield12 @ Jan 28, 2016 -> 08:42 AM) The point is to avoid situations like the Danks contract that hamstring payroll flexibility. But I'm sure you will still argue we got our money's worth, nevertheless. Danks, despite being overpaid, isn't really hamstringing them. He's a solid number 5.
  8. QUOTE (Dick Allen @ Jan 28, 2016 -> 08:36 AM) Are you kidding me? Ian Kennedy gets $70 million. What do you think Chris Sale would get? When he becomes a free agent, a s***load. He's still in for a big payday. Buying out two years isn't changing that.
  9. QUOTE (Dick Allen @ Jan 28, 2016 -> 08:21 AM) Sox f***ed up giving Sale and Q long term extensions. Buying 2 years of free agency on Sale isn't much of an extension in my opinion.
  10. QUOTE (SoxPride18 @ Jan 26, 2016 -> 02:01 PM) Ken Rosenthal ‏@Ken_Rosenthal 5m5 minutes ago Source: Cuban teen phenom Lazarito anticipates a decision by Feb. 10. Already negotiating with teams, while a few private workouts remain. Feb 10: "Lazarito signs with Dodgers/Cubs"
  11. QUOTE (caulfield12 @ Jan 27, 2016 -> 06:11 AM) That's fine...so then we have five outfielders or three catchers? What about pinch-running? Sanchez is pretty slow. I suppose they can use Shuck, but it would be nice if we had a player off the bench capable of getting into scoring position by himself in the late innings. That's not Fields or Sands, either. And Carlos is probably going to be similar to Beckham at SS. Saladino will have to play nearly everyday like Alexei. I see them breaking camp with an 8th reliever since they open the season with 8 games in a row but yeah they'll need another bench guy at some point. Probably make a roster move the first day off of the season.
  12. QUOTE (caulfield12 @ Jan 27, 2016 -> 12:20 AM) Leury, Olt/Davidson (depending on how confident they are in Sanchez covering 3B) or Fields/Jerry Sands...doubtful they would go with 3 catchers. Last year, we started with Beckham and Bonifacio on the infield. However you look at it, that's five pretty uninspiring possibilities. Sanchez doesn't have to cover third. Our backup 3B plays 2B.
  13. QUOTE (fathom @ Jan 26, 2016 -> 06:19 PM) Prediction that Hector Sanchez makes Opening Day roster after Avila gets hurt in ST That's definitely a realistic prediction. I expect Sanchez at some point this season.
  14. QUOTE (shysocks @ Jan 26, 2016 -> 02:32 PM) First, Carl Crawford =/= Jim Thome. Second, what's this half price stuff? Are the Red Sox paying a big piece of Crawford's salary and I'm not aware of it? Even if that's the case I'd still rather have Ethier by a mile. He has a massive edge in durability and OBP. Think he meant Dodgers would pay half to dump him.
  15. QUOTE (CB2.0 @ Jan 26, 2016 -> 09:42 AM) Jackson and Latos, for me. There's nothing left that I think is worth the Samardzija pick or the $. So, sign some low $ lottery tickets as backup for weak spots, and make those 3 top 50 picks count. Agree.
  16. QUOTE (Hatchetman @ Jan 26, 2016 -> 09:36 AM) I propose Jordan Guerrero for Colby Rasmus. He can't be traded until June due to accepting the QO.
  17. QUOTE (Jose Abreu @ Jan 26, 2016 -> 08:20 AM) As others stated, the Mets are also clearly the best rotation in baseball. Harvey/DeGrom/Syndergaard/Matz/Colon or Niese... nobody else can come close to that. They traded Niese for Neil Walker. But they have Wheeler coming back at some point which is another young exciting arm better than Niese so your point still stands.
  18. QUOTE (ChiSoxFanMike @ Jan 26, 2016 -> 08:05 AM) This, especially if Fulmer replaces Danks at some point in the near future. As excited as I am to see him in our rotation, I want him in the minors for 16 (MAYBE a bullpen stint in September if we need an extra arm for a playoff push).
  19. I'm so torn. It's supposedly a deep draft this season (no, they don't say that every year) but he's there for the taking. I know a lot of people are against one year deals for QO guys but next offseason may be the last one where we can recoup it (CBA expires this year but doubt the handling of compensation changes next offseason; probably goes into effect 17-18 offseason).
  20. QUOTE (ChiSoxFanMike @ Jan 25, 2016 -> 02:58 PM) When Cespedes inevitably opts out and becomes a free agent next offseason, can we keep the discussion in this thread as well? It would be awesome if we could get this thread to 10,000 posts or more. #signcespedes2017
  21. QUOTE (Dick Allen @ Jan 23, 2016 -> 11:24 AM) I am all for having 42 and 21 displayed in all parks, but do the numbers really have to be retired? Let the individual teams do that. Wouldn't it make more of an impact on the legacy of Jackie Robinson if a player wore 42 in his honor, and a broadcaster mentioned it rather than having no one wear it except everyone wear it one day a year? Agree. I don't think they need to be retired either. I like the displayed idea though.
  22. QUOTE (LDF @ Jan 24, 2016 -> 02:48 AM) does anyone know when is the deadline for int't players counting for next season int'l salary cap and / or this season cap??? They would be unrestricted free agents so there is no cap on them. You're thinking of the amateur spending.
  23. I know the CBA expires at the end of this year but wouldn't the old rules still apply through next offseason? I feel like any agreement dealing with free agent compensation would go into effect after the 2017 season.
  24. QUOTE (flavum @ Nov 11, 2015 -> 01:11 PM) https://twitter.com/whitesox/status/664490052261535744 A couple exhibitions in San Diego to end it. Good to see they're staying out west before playing in Oakland, and not going to an affiliate. I know a lot of people were complaining about opening up in Oakland to start the year but I actually like opening up out West coming off of Spring Training. And we can get that ugly stadium of the way ASAP haha
  25. QUOTE (ChiSoxFanMike @ Jan 23, 2016 -> 11:52 AM) Here's my plan. - Trade Avi and Tyler Danish for Carlos Gomez - Sign Ian Desmond to a 3 year/$45 million deal Lineup: 1. Adam Eaton (RF) 2. Carlos Gomez (CF) 3. Jose Abreu (1B) 4. Todd Frazier (3B) 5. Melky Cabrera (LF) 6. Ian Desmond (SS) 7. Adam LaRoche (DH) 8. Brett Lawrie (2B) 9. Alex Avila/Dioner Navarro © Thoughts? That lineup seems pretty well rounded from top to bottom IMO. Yeah idk why Houston would want Garcia.
