They can’t draft higher than 10th in 2027. If both Murakami and Imai fall into their lap and you’re holding onto Robert because you don’t like offers, you might as well go semi-all in. Add Giolito. Add Bellinger. Add good talent while spending no draft picks.
I figured that. No way they were in on him until his market wasn’t there.
Maybe the same can happen with Imai. Obviously not as cheap and short but still. Give him a deal similarly structured to Imanaga’s deal.
The problem is, if you commit to him being full-time DH, you’re relegating Quero to the bench. And I’d rather rotate the catchers there to get them the most at bats in a lost season.
Doesn’t seem like they have room with the recent additions but I guess there could be a scenario where they move Steer (or Lux even) and Marte finds his way back into the IF mix at 1B/DH (hasn’t played 1B at any level…yet)
Well if you’re going to hold onto Robert and see if he can bounce back, might as well go all in and a potential top of rotation arm that won’t cost you a draft pick. Next year will only be his age 28 season.
I hate the idea of making Quero a backup. I’d rather trade him while he still has some prospect/young player with 6 years of control shine for another area of need.
We basically have to pencil him in left. I feel like if he just DH’d he would be fine though. Unfortunately for him, we have 2 young catchers to get at bats for.
I think if he struggles first few months, they could pull the plug.
