I think he may have taken my comment the wrong way. I wasn't advocating in the slightest that we should have held onto him.

I would have gambled on him hitting a weak enough ground ball somewhere in the infield to move the guy over. Or gambled on a hit.

Because the hitter is out and Sam doesn’t have to go to second with the force out at first. Literally the same as when a first baseman starts a double play by tagging first base and throwing to second and needing to tag the runner.
