QUOTE (Buehrle>Wood @ Jun 16, 2014 -> 11:38 AM) Yes! Red card for Pepe! This game could not be going any better. I wouldn't mind seeing Portugal pick up a few more cards and have Germany win about 6-0.
-
QUOTE (Ozzie Ball @ Jun 16, 2014 -> 11:30 AM) Disagree. Germany look to be the class of this group. I would expect them to win all three games comfortably. In the race for 2nd place it benefits the US if Portugal don't get anything here. Agreed. The USA definitely wants a Germany blowout here.

QUOTE (RockRaines @ Jun 16, 2014 -> 09:38 AM) no clue. I just know they think the offer is good enough to get it done. Does the organization think they have any chance at signing Montes de Oca after getting things done with Rodon? As long as they sign Rodon it was a successful draft but I'm curious as to whether they are going to make a push for Montes de Oca as well.

QUOTE (bmags @ Jun 16, 2014 -> 09:12 AM) Aren't Bulls fans worried that the management is going to use the Spurs as an excuse to stand pat? How so? The Spurs were one play away from winning the championship in 2013 and have a vastly superior roster to the Bulls. The Bulls haven't been remotely close to winning a title since 1998.

QUOTE (Jake @ Jun 13, 2014 -> 08:46 PM) The Spurs aren't necessarily the more talented team but I'd say their overall talent level is generally underrated. MIA has the two best players though and you don't often see teams with two players better than all the other team's players lose. The Spurs roster is fantastic. You have a great all around center in Duncan, athletic wings who can knock down shots, 8 guys in your rotation who shoot 35% from 3 or better (I'm rounding up Ginobili's %), every one they play is a threat on offense, and nearly all the guys in their rotation are multi dimensional offensive players. And we literally just saw the Spurs beat a team with the two best players in the series when they beat the Thunder. And I'm not convinced Wade is really a better player than Duncan or Parker right now.

QUOTE (zenryan @ Jun 13, 2014 -> 03:39 PM) Spain better worry about GD now Their game against Chile is a must win now (assuming Chile beats Australia tonight). I can't see them advancing if they draw that game.

I think it is safe to say that Casillas is done and that we won't be seeing him again in this tourney. Holy s*** has he been awful.

QUOTE (bmags @ Jun 13, 2014 -> 10:35 AM) So where are the people that complain about not watching the NBA because it's "an iso game" now? Are they the biggest spurs fans in the world or can we just call that b.s. at this point. Whenever people make that complaint it is laughable and it has been for a long time.

QUOTE (MexSoxFan#1 @ Jun 12, 2014 -> 11:34 PM) My biggest beef with LeBron is that he's too damn passive. What exactly have the Spurs done to stop LeBron from having more games like did in GM 2? I just get the feeling he doesn't lay it all on the floor. You never got that feeling with MJ. I guess LeBron not laying it all on the floor is the reason the Spurs are destroying the Heat's defense like they are playing a bunch of high school kids. It isn't game but LeBron could take more shots and it still wouldn't make any difference at all until the Heat figure out their D (and frankly I'm just not sure the Heat have the personnel to stop the Spurs this year since Ginobili is playing good basketball again and every single player on the Spurs who takes 3's has been burying them).

QUOTE (Rowand44 @ Jun 12, 2014 -> 11:29 PM) Trust me, I don't think LeBron is MJ, Jordan is the best ever, no question. I just don't get the finals record argument. A loss is a loss. Agreed. Apparently Jordan didn't do a good enough job refusing to lose against the Pistons pre-1991. Penalizing LeBron for putting a garbage Cleveland team on his back and taking them to the finals is dumb. The one series in his career LeBron deserves a ton of blame for losing is against the Mavericks in the final. Otherwise he has played exceptionally well and just lost to better teams.

QUOTE (ZoomSlowik @ Jun 12, 2014 -> 11:27 PM) Just to nitpick, 94-95 Magic were more talented IMO (no bigs on Chicago) and I think you can make the argument for the Suns (not great defensively though). I agree with your general premise though. Let's blame everything on the guy averaging 27.5 a game on the series while shooting 60% from the floor! Yeah, he's not MJ, but he can score 40 the last two games and they still lose. The Spurs have just been better. I'd actually agree on the 94-95 Magic but I don't agree on the Suns. Of course the Bulls lost to the Magic so the Jordan will to win thing doesn't exactly fly there (although Jordan clearly wasn't himself that season).

QUOTE (MexSoxFan#1 @ Jun 12, 2014 -> 10:48 PM) Ask Wilt. Seriously though, it's the highest level, either you're good enough or you ain't. MJ is GOAT in my opinion because he refused to lose once he had the title within sight, sometimes on sheer will alone ve more talented teams. If LeBron had MJ's sheer will to leave everything on the floor, he'd be almost impossible to beat, he has everything to be on that level but he doesn't. I've seen both MJ and LeBron's career, it isn't the homer in me, MJ without question is the superior player, absolutely no doubt in my mind. That's why I laugh when J4L says it's 'a cloin flip' between them, or crap like MJ fans are 'worried' about LeBron. The Bulls never faced a more talented team in the NBA finals and post bad boys Pistons they never played a more talented team in the playoffs. The one series loss LeBron deserves criticism for is the finals loss to the Mavericks. This year the Heat's defense is just getting absolutely shredded by the Spurs and there isn't a whole lot LeBron can do about that on his own. Jordan is the greatest of all time but the amount of criticism LeBron still gets is laughable.

QUOTE (southside hitman @ Jun 12, 2014 -> 02:22 PM) Chris (KC) Do you think Bukauskas will sign? How about Montes de Oca? Klaw (2:05 PM) No to both. I think the WSox took BMdO as a backup plan in case Rodon doesn't sign - offer the kid a million bucks and make him turn it down. If that was the plan, I don't think many people would be consoled by Bryce Montes de Oca if we miss on Rodon. If Rodon comes in at about slot the Sox can (and should) still offer Montes de Oca close to a million dollars and make him turn it down. I would guess Rodon comes in over slot and the Sox don't have enough cash to get things done with Montes de Oca though.
-
QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Jun 11, 2014 -> 04:34 PM) IF he were to sign for slot, that would leave the Sox the ability to throw around $500k and a college full ride at him. Only if they choose not to use the 5% buffer which would be really stupid.
-
QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Jun 11, 2014 -> 04:31 PM) SoxNet.net @SoxNet 15s With today's signings, Sox look to have around just short of $400k in savings to use towards Rodon or ~$6.1million total. #MLBDraft It won't happen but if Rodon signs for around slot that means the Sox will have enough to make a strong push for Montes de Oca.
-
QUOTE (Buehrle>Wood @ Jun 11, 2014 -> 03:42 PM) I thought for sure we'd get way underslot for Jake Peter reading his scouting report. I don't get that one either, especially if he is actually going to be a SS rather than a pitcher.
-
QUOTE (fathom @ Jun 11, 2014 -> 03:44 PM) So they basically signed 2-5 at slot value given Fry and Austin combining to equal their 3-4 slots now. I find it hard to imagine a situation where the Sox sign Montes de Oca. As for Rodon, it would seem he will be getting in the 6 million range if he signs. If Rodon signs in the 6 mil range we can throw close to $600,000 at Montes de Oca (assuming Ziznewski is way under slot which he better be and Clark and Jarvis are basically at slot). I doubt that gets it done but it should at least make it a little interesting.
-
QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Jun 11, 2014 -> 03:36 PM) Jim Callis @jimcallisMLB 1m The @WhiteSox announced several signings...3rd-rder Jace Fry gets $760k (value at 77 = $726k). Ore St LHP, strikes w/3 pitches. @MLBDraft I'm really surprised we went over slot with Fry (even though it wasn't by much).
-
QUOTE (witesoxfan @ Jun 11, 2014 -> 10:45 AM) Seriously, any concern of Rodon not signing is completely unwarranted. There is a 99.999% chance he is signing. Agreed, the only real thing of interest is to see if he signs at a low enough amount that will allow the Sox to make a real run at signing Montes De Oca.
-
QUOTE (raBBit @ Jun 11, 2014 -> 12:31 PM) I was hoping Austin would have signed for less than he did. I am not sure we can assume Jarvis will sign for slot. Ziznewski made a (perhaps) silly mistake by saying he thought he was going to be drafted on day three. Either way, he'll be way underslot. Obviously this is all being appropriated for both/either Rodon and/or Montas de Oca. Stealing Montas de Oca ceiling would really be the cherry on top of a great draft at face value. I am sure the Sox are really selling themselves to this kid's advisors. What's a better a organization for this kid's history? I am just surprised the Sox didn't take more seniors in the latter half of the first round. That's a strategy we employed last year and it netted us Michalczewski and this year there was a serious run of seniors in the 7-10 rounds. Hopefully that means the Sox really like that players they nabbed at the end of day two. I don't think we can assume Jarvis signed right at slot but with how quickly he signed it seems highly unlikely it was for much above slot.
-
QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Jun 11, 2014 -> 09:53 AM) It isn't about the money. Well if it is about respecting Selig and the slot suggestions it is even dumber since the rules expressly allow you to go 5% over without being penalized other than monetarily.
-
QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Jun 11, 2014 -> 09:40 AM) The Sox won't go over. They never go over, ever since slotting came into existance. It would be incredibly foolish not to go over if it meant we could sign Montes De Oca. I know it isn't our money but you are talking about a few hundred thousand dollar fine to sign a premium talent.
-
QUOTE (caulfield12 @ Jun 11, 2014 -> 08:09 AM) So there's an extra $267,540 to be used for either Rodon or the 13/14th round pitcher. It is safe to assume we will get big savings from Ziznewski as well. I would guess Clark is at slot or right around it. No idea with Jarvis but with how quickly he signed I would assume he was also at slot or just above it since the Sox wouldn't have gone much above slot for a 10th rounder that quickly.
-
The Heat as a team actually shot the ball incredibly well. LeBron shooting more wasn't really the answer although his turnovers hurt them a lot yesterday. The real issue for the Heat is that you simply aren't going to win when the other team shoots 60% from the floor, 45% on 20 3 attempts and gets to the line 32 times while making over 80%.
-
QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Jun 10, 2014 -> 02:48 PM) Also worth noting, if we take my above scenario, while signing Rodon to a slot deal, that would mean we could offer $514,200 to De Oca without going over the teams allotment, and $989,684 without losing a draft pick. If Rodon signs at $6,000,000 exactly, those numbers drop to $235,700 and $611,184 respectively. It is unlikely but if the Sox can get to that second number (with Rodon at slot) De Oca would be absolutely insane to pass on that. Frankly anything $750,000 and above he would be crazy to pass since he would have to stay healthy and still pitch well enough in college to go in the first two rounds to get a bigger bonus than that.
