QUOTE (Jose Abreu @ Jun 9, 2014 -> 10:17 PM) But his bat would kill us He could be used as a defensive replacement. It isn't like Sierra can hit at all anyways.

Serious Prospects from '14 Draft Class

QUOTE (Feeky Magee @ Jun 9, 2014 -> 02:14 PM) Same question I asked in the draft thread: if the White Sox were genuinely confident of getting him signed, why not take him in the 11th round instead of the 14th? Seems to me it's more of a "well we'll take him here in the unlikely event we have enough to turn his head", rather than a genuine plan with a good chance of success. They probably didn't know exactly how much they were going to have to play with. Without knowing what Rodon and Adams were going to sign for you really have no idea what you will be able to offer Montes and getting those guys in the fold is clearly the priority. -

QUOTE (southside hitman @ Jun 9, 2014 -> 01:48 PM) I agree with you, but it may not be what he's thinking or what people are whispering into his ear. It isn't an easy decision, but he would both have to stay healthy and be really really good at Missouri for staying in school to be worth it. -
QUOTE (ptatc @ Jun 9, 2014 -> 01:54 PM) I don't know even about him to know if he is worth it or not. If he is currently ranked the #32 best pick, he is a first round talent. He is a high school kid who has had Tommy John surgery already. There is huge upside there but you don't forfeit a first round pick that could end up being a really high pick (we still don't know how this season is going to go) to sign him.

QUOTE (ptatc @ Jun 9, 2014 -> 01:39 PM) I wonder if the Sox would be willing to forfeit a draft pick next year if they think he is that good? If they think he is a first round talent, it may be worth it to sign Rodon, Adam and him. No way do you forfeit your 2015 first round pick to sign this kid. Especially since there is a chance that pick winds up in the top 10 again.

QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Jun 9, 2014 -> 01:26 PM) IIRC, it is more like $475k It is 5% of $9.5 million. I thought I saw we had $9.8 but didn't check it myself. In that case we could offer him about $575,000 since the first $100,000 doesn't count against the pool. That $15k probably wouldn't change much either way. If the Sox are below slot at all after signing the first 10 picks they are going to be able to put together a package that is very tough for Montes to pass up on. Now with having to sign Rodon and Adams that probably isn't likely but you never know. -

QUOTE (southside hitman @ Jun 9, 2014 -> 01:22 PM) Not many scouts would of batted an eye if he was selected in the 2nd round and those slot values ranged from 1 to 1.5 million. And that's him coming off of TJ surgery, if he preforms well in college he could be top 10 pick in the 2017 draft. It might be half a million dollars now, but it could be 2-4 million dollars in a couple years and the fun and excitement of college. One more arm injury and he could also be looking at a signing bonus of about $5,000. -

QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Jun 9, 2014 -> 12:56 PM) LOL. In all seriousness, if the Sox scrape together half a million dollars, plus a full ride, it will be interesting to see what he does. If we come in exactly at slot for the first 10 picks and are willing to pay the tax the Sox can offer him about $590,000 which would put him at about the middle of the third round in terms of bonus. That will be really tough for a guy who has already had Tommy John once to turn down. He would basically be having to bet that he actually stays healthy for the next 3 years and that he pitches well enough to get taken in the first two rounds. -
Any rumors as to what Jarvis signed for? I have to imagine it was right around slot because there is no way they went much above slot for a 10th round pick before the Rodon and Adams deals were taken care of.

QUOTE (greg775 @ Jun 8, 2014 -> 09:54 PM) The Spurs are not going to win in Miami. This is just like the Indy series. These teams beat the Heat once and don't have the same WTW the second game, then before you know it, it's a crucial split. Manu played like s*** the last 2-3 minutes. Miami is going to bring it back to S.A. up 3-1. I wouldn't discount a Miami win in game Five, but Spurs will likely salvage game five, then Miami wraps it up at home. Once again, the genius Gregg Popovich shows he's just like any other coach. Scott Brooks would have gotten fried for losing this game down the stretch. Players win games. Bosh hit the huge shot; LeBron was great on both ends. Heat turned it up on defense in crunch time. Result a victory. Lol at the will to win being the problem for teams against the Heat.

Sierra blows, more bad defense leading to runs.

Sox Draft Carlos Rodon> Draft Day Discussion Thread

QUOTE (Y2JImmy0 @ Jun 7, 2014 -> 03:19 PM) I know the Sox will probably be tapped out after Rodon and Spencer but if I'm De Oca, I don't think pitching in college is the best move with 1 TJS already under my belt. He's really going to take the chance that he will be healthy for the next 3 years, pitching for free? F that. I'd go pro. It will really depend on what the Sox have left in their pool after the first 10 picks. They can go 5% over their pool without losing a pick and I believe their pool is about 9.8 million which means they have about $490,000 on top of that to play with. If their first 10 picks come in at or about slot and the Sox can offer him $500,000+ he will have a tough decision to make. And if the Sox are below slot after first 10 picks (unlikely but not impossible) then they will be able to make him a pretty good offer. -

QUOTE (raBBit @ Jun 7, 2014 -> 12:51 PM) Him having TJ his junior year is definitely a negotiating tactic for the Sox. What other team can keep pitchers healthy and help supplement their fastball better than the Sox? I'm not expecting him to sign but the Sox have a better chance than most if the kids at least considering going pro. Hopefully we have money left in the pool to exceed $100,000 by a fair amount. -

QUOTE (Buehrle>Wood @ Jun 7, 2014 -> 12:11 PM) 7th best prospect out of Oklahoma. Number 8 Big 12 prospect coming into the season Looks like he was 2nd in the Big 12 in home runs this year and 3rd in doubles. Good numbers all around really. -

QUOTE (raBBit @ Jun 5, 2014 -> 11:41 PM) So I imagine the FO is ecstatic right now? I know everyone loves Reetz but his swing left-handed isn't pretty. You can definitely tell he's a natural righty. I do like the idea and would be happy with the pick but at some point we have to start scaling back to afford Rodon and Adams. Probably, but we don't really know how those negotiations are going or whether those guys are definitely going to go for above slot. -

QUOTE (Harry Chappas @ Jun 5, 2014 -> 11:38 PM) Bruce Levine was on wscr making the cubs plan seem sensible. Then said rodon's record hurt him this year man is a putz and dolt. Great draft thus far. Going below slot in the first in sensible. Going below slot in the first and second makes no sense because there are diminishing returns and less and less players available each round that are worth breaking the bank for. -
QUOTE (SleepyWhiteSox @ Jun 5, 2014 -> 11:02 PM) Yeah totally unfair...not like both teams are playing in the exact same conditions or anythin... Duncan is 48 practically playing the whole game and Parker is playing on a bad wheel in the exact same conditions. LeBron is the most physically fit human being on earth. I found it hilarious that he was left paralyzed and had to be taken into the locker room for a thigh transplant as the heat absolutely folded at the slightest hint of adversity lol Way to tough it out and leave it all out on the court in the championship... Lol, I swear people have never been around someone trying to play when their muscles are cramping. If the cramps are bad it really can't be done.

QUOTE (flavum @ Jun 5, 2014 -> 11:01 PM) OK, so who do you want at 77 tomorrow? If you actually have an opinion at this stage. It is really tough to say without knowing how much money they have to play with and what guys they think they can sign. I expect we see a decent amount of college players taken in rounds 3-10 though. -

QUOTE (bucket-of-suck @ Jun 5, 2014 -> 10:57 PM) Not trying to hate but does anybody know what the hell the Cubs are doing? I just kind of assumed with their first pick they were saving money to distribute through the draft but then they took a guy who definitely appears to be an underslot college arm in the 2nd which makes no sense because it isn't like there are so many elite players falling that they will be able to grab top talent throughout rounds 3-10. -
QUOTE (Rowand44 @ Jun 5, 2014 -> 10:32 PM) Is he just cramping? I don't have volume. Yes.

It really sucks that the lack of AC is having such an impact on an NBA finals game.

QUOTE (fathom @ Jun 5, 2014 -> 10:08 PM) That's fine with me if they get the top 2 signed Yep. If you go through past drafts it is very rare to get a really good player after the first couple of rounds anyways. Give me the two elite talents and then just hope to get lucky with some of the other picks. -
