GOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOAL! Mighty Ducks win!

SI, I've been told things will never happen before...and they happened. I know firsthand that things that are supposedly "never" going to happen can and do happen. I have a lot of hobbies, watch cartoons, etc. I just care about politics a lot more than most adults in the USA do. Democracy is not a spectator event.

Targeting minorities is not illegal, it's just a very shady thing to do. The only reason they MADE the "Yo Soy El Army" materials was because they were targeting that ethnic minority. For example, African Americans make up 13% of the US population. Yet they compose almost 1/3 of the Army membership. Check "Homefront" by Catherine Lutz for more details about this. I just asked them really nicely about their stuff and they were the ones that got VERY angry and defensive about the entire situation. They don't come here that often but their flyers are up all over campus. And I have yet to see a white person on the flyers that they have put up around campus (I have a giant shopping bag filled to the brim with military recruitment stuff that I have found, seen, etc.) If you would like to read a perspective about the military, check out Boston University emeritus (and WW II veteran) Howard Zinn. He has some very good books about US history and the history of the Army etc.

Funny, Heather, but I don't remember asking if I gave a flying f***.

That is the capitalist critique of socialism. Very unbalanced if your teacher only gave that one side. Nike already makes obscene profits. Let's say we pay the minimum wage $ 5.15. So that is an 8 hour day which is approx. $43 per day. That is about $200 per week BEFORE taxes. Even with that increase in work, most of the profits are used in advertising departments, not in wages. The key aspect in socialism is that the state does control industry. With state control, the corporation is not supposed to be profit driven so they will not shut down. Higher wages paid out to workers makes the greater possibility for higher taxes and social programs like health care, etc. etc. etc. If you would like the socialist critique of capitalism, I would ask you to look at Bolivia in the 1990s when Bechtel pritatized the Bolivian water supply and also the happenings in Chile for the past 20 or so years. They did everything the WTO, IMF, and World Bank told them according to the top laissez faire capitalist economists in the world and it ran their economies into the ground. "The Best Democracy Money Can Buy" by Greg Palast is one book to look into for this sort of information. Neither system is absolutely perfect but this class based hierarchy driven on hate and utilizing other's problems to your advantage is not only inhuman, but it's sickening. Capitalism is not the answer to the world's problems. A system that could incorporate aspects of both would be ideal but with NAFTA etc. (ask RPS about the good jobs going to foreign countries because of lower wages and how great capitalism is because of that) and the fact that unions have lost much of their bargaining power because of NAFTA and temp work, labor is yet again being crushed. They cannot fight back in this current capitalist society.

BTW, Mooch, that Monica Lewinsky cartoon is hysterical.

Baggs -- During the summer, I live in a town with 2000 people in it. It's a horrid little boring town and until my job starts, I basically have no real choice but listen to underground music and read since UIUC is one of the first schools to let out for the summer in early May. So, there's not much else to do but read....and reading is a very fun activity. Mooch -- The point of those examples was the argument that the presidential regimes can and HAVE lied in the past to us, so the public must be very weary of the regime.

Actually, if you check out Billboard...sales of Dixie Chicks albums actually went UP considerably after their anti-war declarations.

What was that experience? Also what is with the crossed out cross as your avatar? Crossed out cross is one of the tags from one of my favorite bands, Bad Religion. My experience. I was wearing my Get Up Kids t-shirt and my dark blue pants (so I wasn't so obvious in my anti-Bush sentiment) and I say that this Latino Campus Tour was having a dance event. So I went over to check it out. When I got there, there were no members of the dance troupe that was going to perform, but it was all US Army men. They gave me some recruitment flyers and saw that I was reading a book called "Killing Hope: US Military and CIA Interventions Since 1945." Then they gave me a keychain, a mug, another keychain that all said "Yo Soy el Army". They were so targeting Latinos, it was really disturbing (I almost got a CD holder that said "Yo Soy el Army" all over it but they ran out right before I got there) They gave me a flyer that, in the pictures (I counted) 49 minorities and 8 white people. So, they asked if I wanted to fill out a recruitment form after they gave me all this stuff and I declined. I asked them if I could take some pictures about how the Army recruiting thing was labeled that it was a Latino Dance Tour and they let me. So I took a bunch of pictures (the US Army is the primary funder of this dance troupe so they can hand out Army lit to Latinos) and one of the officers got really angry when I asked him why there were so few whites in the literature that he gave me. He got VERY cross with me and said "What would a person like you want with military recruitment flyers anyway?" He proceeded to not answer my questions and they took the stand down and left right after I kept pressing them why there were so few whites in the photo ops in their literature. Then one of their representatives came over and told me to leave because "I was causing a disturbance" by respectfully asking a question that they didn't want to answer. They were targeting minorities and didn't want to admit to it, not that I can blame them for wanting to be caught in something so dispicable.

Joe is a class act. He could have been, and rightly so, b****ing the f*** out of that moron umpire but he didn't. He can say it was a foul ball but that doesn't make it any less of a very s***ty call.

I have the same problem. :fyou :fyou :fyou :fyou Cooper

http://www.guardian.co.uk/afghanistan/stor...,942347,00.html Yet again, the US breaks international law. What's new? Also, any UIUC people will have a chance to see me live and in person Tuesday at 100 Noyes for the symposium about the war sponsored by the Chancellor's office on Tuesday from 3-5 pm. (Professors in this one are talking about the effect of war on the individual with focuses of professors in philosophy with the local Monsignor discussing consciencious objection) And the Chancellor's office has done a very good job in this 4 part symposium to get both liberals and conservatives involved as experts in this symposium. I get to talk about my experience with military recruitment on campus...And I've had a very entertaining experience that really isn't flattering to the military.

I don't think there is a transcript. He's been on Bill Maher's show on HBO and was very outspoken with comments like "Saddam never stole my vote" "One of them is undemocratically elected and has killed many people...and the other is Saddam" etc. He somehow dislikes Bush even more than me. If you like Aaron McGruder, you may also like "Get Your War On" http://www.mnftiu.cc I love this cartoon too, haha.

Boondocks does rule! UIUC actually had Arron McGruder come to campus to give a lecture about Boondocks and why he created it and everything. It was very interesting.

You know as well as I do that the Bush regime doesn't need little things like FACTS and LOGIC to have a full scale invasion of a country. As long as you have giant all around, people just shut their eyes and ears and close their mouths and allow Bush to do whatever he wants. "The price of freedom is eternal vigilance." ~ Doesn't that mean that it is up to each and every US citizen to make sure that our President is not lying to us? I mean, it happened in the Gulf of Tonkin and everybody bought that hook, line, and sinker. 58,000 Americans died and over 2-3 million Vietnamese perished because of an event that never took place in the Gulf of Tonkin. The documents have also come out recently that the US knew Japan was going to bomb Pearl Harbor and they still allowed those men to die just so we could enter the war (didn't even tell them to be somewhat prepared or anything). I guess doing this ( ) is a lot easier than thinking critically and looking at the facts like so few pro-war people seem to be doing these days.

WSC, don't use a person's sexual orientation as a demeaning term. K thx. Top Simpsons episodes have to be: (in no particular order) 1) Homer becomes the food critic for the newspaper 2) When they go to Japan 3) When Bart takes on Nelson (the one at the very beginning of the series with the water balloon fight) 4) When Bart steals Bonestorm But Family Guy, SeaLab 2021, Aqua Teen Hunger Force, and Harvey Birdman: Attorney at Law are all shows that are, IMHO, better than the current status of the Simpsons. If we are talking old school Simpsons when the series was much better than it is now then nothing can stand up to that.

The Boondocks is the greatest comic ever.

What's sad is a professor in political science at North Central Texas College was recently suspended for "not being a true American" and "not being patriotic enough" because she gave extra credit to her class for those that went out to observe a peace rally (not participate, just observe one...you know since it is political science, it makes sense that one would want the students to see democracy at work) But the O'Reilly Youth went to the university and she was suspended (in violation of the proper channels of teacher review, so this professor can sue if she wants). Ahhhhhh, the sweet wonderful smell of fascism.

A lot of people knew that Saddam had money. How was it that he was building the presidential palaces? The anti-sanctions movement knew that Saddam was using the Oil for Food cash to make himself rich...that's why they wanted the sanctions dropped so it would be easier for humanitarian organizations like Voices in the Wilderness to come in and give food away (Right now as it stands, if a person goes to Iraq and gives the hungry children food, they can be prosecuted and face a possible 12 year prison sentence.)

Firstly, I don't care about money. My family is pretty well off so if I didn't really want to work all that much, I could cruise mooching off my family. I volunteer around campus in a variety of places because I like to do the right thing because I am doing the right thing, not because there is a big salary there. And BMR, I am heterosexual for your future reference. I have some bisexual friends though and I am not going to let you bash them and others in the LGBT community because you refuse to be knowledgeable about the topic.

Correlation is not causation. The study said there is a high CORRELATION between the two. It didn't say that EVERY SINGLE PERSON is that way. It said that there is a very high statistical correlation between the two. How about reading the post next time. But nice try.

CK, I personally find it amusing that you have nothing better to do than try to talk s*** about me. That is pretty damn amusing. You have a house, a job, etc. and yet you have to waste what little free time you do have trying to f*** with me. PA-THET-IC.
-
Im actually very straight, thank you... Just more of Apu's "studies" that are completely wrong Roman. Don't fret dude. CK, the study has actually been verified in a lot of academic and scientific journals. But nice try.

OldRoman, they have nothing better to do than try to f*** with me. That's truly how pathetic they are.
