Don't really excuse the shooting, but that's a pretty unsympathetic victim there. You're running away from cops, causing damage and threatening the safety of the public (swerving into oncoming traffic, barely missing an oncoming car).

 

Was the cop alleging that Smith had a gun in the car? What's his excuse for firing? I feel like there's a puzzle piece missing here...

 

But by the time he was murdered, the car was stopped. He wasn't a threat to public safety (and police conducting high speed chases, especially in residential/surface street areas, is extremely dangerous and many departments have stopped them).

The police SUV also rammed into some signs and poles. High-speed chases are dumb, dangerous and unnecessary in all but the most extreme cases. The risk to others isn't worth it.

How did they crash the SUV into that lightpost? Obviously missing a big chunk of visibility there but that seemed awkward.

But you know, you do you. With how some have thrown around "personal attack" defense around here, I could spin that this way in that you're going at me personally, but not worth my time or lowering our standards.

Good thing we're flooding police departments with military hardware again and stopping the DoJ from investigating systemic civil rights abuses and pursuing consent decrees.

Yeah i'm not saying he's in the right or that he should have been found not guilty, just saying when you run away from police and start endangering the lives of others, you shouldn't be surprised if you end up dead. I'm not sure why people think it's a good idea. And i'm sure that's a big reason why juries find these guys not guilty. "They had it coming" is an easy justification.

Oh please. Stop being so sensitive. You don't think the media loves this stuff and covers it knowing that people will watch hoping to see the train wreck? Yes, it's absolutely newsworthy and yes, it should be covered. I'm not saying it shouldn't be, just that the media lives for this stuff.

Backing off of a high speed chase does not equal letting a person go. High speed chases are really, really dangerous and carry a high risk of collateral damage (damage that generally is not recoverable by the innocent victim who is caught up in the chase). Backing off of the chase and circulating plate numbers and the heading of the vehicle to the rest of the force is sometimes a way safer option for everybody involved.

Absolutely. This is standard procedure in many police departments now because high speed chases endanger so many people. In the Stockley case, the guy was suspected of making a drug deal. Is it worth putting the public and the officers' lives at risk to engage in a high speed chase in a residential area?

OK, it's 4 p.m., Central time Friday and gets dark in 4 hours. Are we looking at the worst case of civil unrest/violence in some time or will the protests this evening and Saturday night be peaceful? Businesses sent their people home at 3; schools were closed today; businesses are shuttering their windows; some owners are armed in case of looters. I will be an optimist and say no violence tonight.

 

My question to you is ... I was listening to Hannity on the way to work and some expert caller said St. Louis population is dipping dipping dipping. Nobody wants to live there cause everytime there is a death there are riots.

They said they are dreaming if they think Amazon would even consider moving to such a city. Like the University of Missouri getting hit, is St. Louis crumbling because of Ferguson violence, St. Louis potential of violence?

Ya people are expecting s*** to pop off pretty bad tonight. It's not too bad yet but it's gaining steam. I got sent home early from work cause my bosses were freaking out cause I live in the middle of the city. Could be a fun night.

So far not too bad, although one injury is too bad.

Three cops hit with bricks. Some thugs broke the windows at the library. That's just ridiculous to damage a library. It's 11:30; don't know if any riots will break out after the bewitching hour or not. Seems not too bad. Cops are being very proactive. If some protestor throws anything, they immediately respond with pepper spray and start moving in.

They were also knocking down old ladies and pepper spraying people trying to help her up

For sure, probably not a great guy, but shooting so quickly? That cop was so quick to pop off a bunch of rounds and then state he was going to kill the guy and then shot him with a larger gun while he was stopped. You could see the terror in his partners face.

So protestors force St. Louis police to close down a mall today. Black Lives Matter signs galore at the protest in the mall.

If these protestors are trying to ruin a city, good job. Wonder if they'll hit the U2 concert tonight. Is it legal to head to a mall and march through it chanting and all that? Don't you need a permit? I'd arrest all the protestors if it's illegal. I mean protest is GREAT! Do it legally. Do it without harming businesses. Do it without inconveniencing people that want no part of it all.

Ah, U2 canceled the concert. Good for them. Can't risk it. How is this good for the city of St. Louis? If these are paid protestors they obviously are trying to ruin a once great city.

There have been allegations that some people fly in for the protests just to stir up trouble. I am all for legal protest. Do u or do you not need a permit to protest in a mall? I'd throw them all in jail if illegal. Businesses are cost profits; people that want to shop are cost inconvenience.

 

I just read this: "The general rule is that free speech activity cannot take place on private property, including shopping malls, without consent of the property owner."

If true why weren't they all arrested in the St. Louis mall?
